I have nice copies of this book, that I refuse to read, because I don‘t want to mess it up… This is the kind of book I need to underline in and write things down in. 🤪🤪🤪

BookwormAHN I do the same thing. I have nice copies and then I have one in particular that I've highlighted, marked, and made notes in 😸 6y

Love how he wound his family history around food. You are going to want some gravy and biscuits, while reading. Includes down home cooking and recipes. Love memoirs

britt_brooke I had the pleasure of meeting him at the Southern Festival of Books last year, but I still haven‘t read this. Need to soon! 6y
goodbyefrancie Love his books and his voice. He narrated one of my favorite books, The Poet of Tolstoy Park, and it made the book twice as good. 6y

I tend not to follow Littens who do not have a profile picture, and who have not made any posts because I don‘t know if it‘s a real profile or not. ????

Redwritinghood Same, unless they otherwise interact with me. 6y
DGRachel Not being the most tech savvy of people, it took me awhile to even figure out how to upload a profile picture. I also HATE having my picture taken, so my profile picture is almost never actually of me on any social media platform. I don‘t think Litsy has a major problem with fake profiles, but I understand the desire for caution. 😊 6y
Carolyn11215 At this point I follow anyone who follows me. 6y
See All 13 Comments
GingerAntics I generally wait until they‘ve uploaded a photo and posted something. The profile pic isn‘t the biggest deal, honestly, but I want to see that the account is actually going to be used, and it wasn‘t just made and then they decided a few days later to forget it. 6y
Mimi28 I only follow people back who have posted something. If it says no posts yet, I leave it alone. 6y
Weaponxgirl I used to follow everyone but now I do want to see if they are going to post. Saying that I know I follow a lot of dead accounts because I liked what they were posting before and I‘m hoping they will come back at some point. I keep disappearing when my head isn‘t in a good place but I love it here and I‘m always going to come back. I hope others will do the same. 6y
TrishB I only follow back now once people have posted. 6y
TK-421 I used to follow everyone who followed me. Now I wait and only follow those who post because I ended up following so many inactive accounts. It's a pain to try to weed them out later. I go through my following list every now & then to unfollow people who haven't been active for a long time but like @Weaponxgirl I sometimes continue to follow some people in the hopes that they'll start posting again. 6y
Jobe @Mimi28 Exactly 6y
Melissa_J I wait to see what, if anything, they post, and if it coincides with my own reading tastes. Most of my new followers in recent weeks still haven‘t posted anything. I unfollowed a whole bunch of inactive accounts recently. I used to automatically follow back, but I‘m not on Litsy much Monday to Friday so I try to keep my follow list manageable so I don‘t miss much. 6y
SleepyDragon I follow anyone who follows me, unless they post something that bothers me in some way. Then I unfollow. It doesn't bother me if they haven't posted yet, and I don't want to miss if and when they do. I will never use my own image as a profile pic. It's not something I am comfortable doing. 6y
Pricel101 Because we have a love of books in common, I‘m very trusting when it comes to a follow back. I admire my Litten friends who lay it out there when posting their opinions on picks & pans! 👍🌟👎👭👫@Trishb @youneverarrived and many more! 6y

#ExploringBooks. #PlayingWithBooks #LivingWithBooks What if? You were suddenly gifted A Bookshop? What would you do? How would spend your time? 😍

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Make a back room into my bedroom and move in! 👍 6y
JanePratt Shoot. First thing I would do would be to catalog and dewey decimal system the crap out of it. Then I'd invite all my friends and family to come read there. 😍 6y
Jobe @JanePratt An organizer I think if there was a way to hug a bookstore I would probably hug it first then run through it saying It‘s mine it‘s mine it‘s mine 6y
See All 12 Comments
Jobe @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I would stay there all the time for sure but would go home to sleep probably 6y
JanePratt @Jobe I have to have my books organized. That way when I'm dying to read a specific chapter of a random book I can just run to it! Lol 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Jobe But if your room is in the back or apartment upstairs, you can go down anytime and browse....even if you need a new book at 2 am. LOL 6y
AlaSkaat I think I'd go in and lie on the floor for several hours overcome with happiness. And then I'd walk around smelling books, one by one. Only then I'd manage to open up and read while sitting on a chair made of books. It would be the best day ever!! 6y
Shvonne Hopefully there is an apartment above it so I can move in. 6y
Jobe @OleAnder Your response would be more like mine lots of looking around and smelling and taking it in 6y
Jobe @Shvonne Exactly! 6y
AlaSkaat @Jobe Yeah. Of course after that I would only go out to socialise every once in a while-which is how I'd make my money for food. By selling the books I read and did not like! Lol. I have it all planned already! Someone give me a bookshop already so I can lock myself away 😂😂 6y

What is the genre you will NOT read? #PickyAboutBooks We all have genres we will not read, as for me, I don‘t like romance, mystery or horror. You might say WELL, what‘s left then?

CouronneDhiver I don‘t do paranormal/occult books... 6y
PrezBookster I don‘t do Romance or Historical Romance especially. 6y
AmberWB I‘m not in to Romance or SciFi 6y
See All 23 Comments
Slajaunie Agree with @CouronneDhiver and also romance, and memoirs. 6y
Tamra Definitely Romance. 6y
Samplergal I won‘t do fantasy or the gaggy romance. I don‘t mind a cute love story but the “Fabio on the cover”are hideous. IMHO. I dislike religious books and most sci-fi too. 6y
Melissa_J Harlequin-type romance novels, memoirs (especially celebrity memoirs), and self-help books. 6y
LaLecture In general I‘m pretty much open to everything. I don‘t really read erotic novels though, especially these “girl next door falls in love with a billionaire” tropes. Religious or spiritual stuff is not for me either. I also rarely read SciFi, horror and biographies although I do want to read more of them to see if I could like them. (edited) 6y
Jobe I had an English literature college professor called the Fabio covers – Bodice Rippers 6y
MicrobeMom I dislike self help and religious fiction! 6y
Crazeedi I don't like romance, harlequin types, I'm not a big fan of sci fi/fantasy, though I have read a couple I've enjoyed. I'm over the self help books I thought I needed when I was young😊, no erotica for me either. Don't like horror. 6y
jessinikkip I agree with most that the plotless erotic romance books just get a pass from me. I will try anything else but if the only point of the plot is eventually these two have sex...nope 6y
bg_reads @Crazeedi you hit the nail on the head.. this is my perspective, too! I could read some self-help (very little), thinking it'll... Well.. help.. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 6y
Lreads No erotica, horror, true crime, or celebrity memoirs for me. 6y
JillR I‘m not a fan of fantasy or memoirs... 6y
GingerAntics I went through a self-help stage, but I just can‘t stand it anymore. The notion that someone that worked for the author is going to magically work for everyone. 🙄 Ugh. I don‘t do romance novels, either. I feel like it‘s all just so far from reality we might as well make romance novels an off shoot of the fantasy genre (although, well done fantasy is nice, so maybe not). Religious fiction is way to preachy. I refuse with that madness. 6y
OrangeMooseReads Harlequin romance are a no go for me and westerns. I‘m sure some of them are good, but I just can‘t. 6y
Crazeedi @cbwaug you made me laugh! Thank you! We're in total agreement . Happy new year, I hope you have a great reading year in 2019 (edited) 6y
JaclynW I'm open to anything. But. Anything too religious is a no. Anything too over the top romance is a no. I don't think I've ever read a western. Self-help, non-fiction and memoirs are usually not my thing but I've read some great ones before. I like a great story with great characters that moves along at a good pace (not too slow). I love a story with a lesson. I love a book that shows me a new perspective. I love a story that entertains. 6y
JBA Horror involving the supernatural, I'm usually okay with. Human against human, not so much. Not that keen on romance, either. 6y
RamsFan1963 Romance novel and poetry. Poetry was drummed into my head in high school, it didnt take. 6y
hollylynnbee I'm not a huge romance reader but I'm usually open to anything. I love old literature but old English is hard for me to read for some reason. I live for a book full if motivational quotes but I don't like self help books. 6y

What camp are you in and why? #hardcover #paperback #survey

LA_Mead I tend to like paperback better because they are more purse-friendly. 6y
corycatelyn I like either but prefer to buy paperback because it's cheaper and takes up less room 😂 6y
megnews I prefer paperback but don‘t mind hardcover. 6y
See All 35 Comments
Aimeesue Either, unless it's a book I want to keep forever and then I'll get a HC because they tend to hold together longer and endure multiple readings better. 6y
CouronneDhiver Hardcover - sturdy, collectable, stays open more easily, holds up perfectly well in my purse, etc. A simple luxury. 6y
Foxyfictionista Paperback because its cheaper and I buy a lot of books. I'll buy a hardback if it's a beautiful book. 6y
Laughterhp Paperback - because it‘s cheaper and less heavy to carry around! 6y
Amiable Paperback. I commute two hours a day in the train and paperbacks are easier to carry and lighter in my backpack. 6y
TrishB Sometimes I can‘t wait for the paperback! 6y
Kaye Paperback. I like the size and they weigh less. I like the bendable covers. I never keep books when I complete them so no reason to buy hardbacks. They‘d probably be better if I collected them to keep. Also the dust jackets are in the way so I always take them off. 6y
Gaylagal2 Paperback, if it's available. They're just easier to hold. But sometimes I'm impatient and either get the Kindle version or just buy the hardcover 🤓 6y
HannaPolkadots Paperback 6y
Burghbookaddict Paperbacks on easier on my little hands. 👐🏼 6y
Jemgirl2014 Kindle app because I need to save space. I also like the instant gratification that having a book download will give me. I plan to give away most of my physical books and save the ones that are most precious to me. 🙂 6y
Pamwurtzler Kindle books! 6y
Velvetfur Paperbacks 4eva 😅 Hardbacks are too big and heavy to carry around with me, and I only make an exception if it's a beautiful collector's edition and I really need it 😊 6y
Nessavamusic Kindle, but when reading actual books paperback 6y
JillPill Paperback! 6y
GingerAntics It depends on the book. For research I prefer hardcover because I know I'm going to be in and out of the book a hundred times and paperbacks often just can't stand up to that. For something I know I'm going to read once to take back to HPB paperback is cool. Ebooks are great for both uses depending on the situation. Being able to search notes it a great when it's time to write a paper. 6y
Birdsong28 Paperback. Especially when it's fiction, I just think you can read it quicker as it's lighter and easier to hold. I do like my non-fiction in hardback as I think it gives it more prominence (but thats just me being weird 😂😂😂) 📚📖 6y
Melissa_J Trade paperbacks are my preference, but I also love hardcovers since they look better on my shelves. I hate mass market paperbacks though. 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz Used to be paperback. Switched to hardcover recently because my baby girl loves to get her hands on my books😏 6y
Melissa_J @TrishB me too! I love trade paperbacks but sometimes you just can‘t wait for it. 6y
Lreads Paperback. Or ebook. Both are easier to hold and carry around. Also cheaper than hard cover. 6y
TheLibrarian Hardback - they don‘t bend like paperbacks (I‘m a sucker for pristine books). 6y
LapReader Paperback 6y
zzz Paperback😊 lighter to hold 6y
MotionChickness Hardback for the bookshelf appeal.. Paperback for reading... So much more comfortable in the hands and usually lighter lol. 6y
GingerAntics @Jobe Half Price Books 6y
GingerAntics @Birdsong28 I like my nonfiction in hardback for that reason as well (at least partly - grad school gave me another reason). 6y
SW-T I think hardcovers look better and they‘re more durable. However, paperbacks are cheaper and more portable. I try to keep series together so whatever format the first book is in, I buy the rest of the series in the same format. (edited) 6y
UCLAoso Paperbacks! Don‘t hurt my wrist to hold while reading or weigh down my purse (important when you walk to the train station:-) 6y
BooknerdsLife This is a tough one!!! 🙈 I love them both but prefer reading from paperback. I collect my favorite books (mostly classics) in hardcover cause they are gorgeous and more durable for a reread 😍🙌 6y

QUESTION FOR PUBLIC LIBRARIANS/STAFF Or to people who do this…
Do people ever bring their OWN BOOKS to the library, for the peace and quiet and use your facility for a place to read their books?

CouronneDhiver I‘ve done it many times and not been told to do otherwise 👍🏽 6y
Addison_Reads I do this all the time at my local library. The librarians always ask what I'm reading when I'm there and just seem happy to have people reading, whether it's my own book or a book from the library. 6y
BookishTrish Of course! 6y
See All 13 Comments
BethM I do this. 6y
Birdsong28 I also do this! I think as long as you are walking through the door and I know libraries depend on numbers of books being taken out but it's not frowned upon to take your own books as you may see something you fancy whilst your in there. 📚📖 6y
Redwritinghood Yes! I do that all the time. 6y
Megara As an ex-library employee, can confirm: people do this (including me).😊 6y
Megara By the way, I own one of those lamps! It‘s my favorite! 6y
myellenbee I definitely do, for the peace and quiet, and as a short perfect hide away. Of course I also leave with library books too. 6y
Librarybelle People bring in their own books all the time to my library! It‘s totally fine...we‘re just happy to see people reading and coming to the library! 6y
JessFerg Absolutely. Although usually some version of textbook/study material. 6y
SleepyDragon If it happens to be my current read, sure. I usually have to wait around for my oldest to finish looking at books and using the computer, so I bring along whatever I'm in the middle of. I honestly feel more strange bringing in a library book that isn't due and I don't plan on returning yet. I mean, I do anyway, but it feels weird. I don't think anyone notices 6y
SleepyDragon And anyway, between the two of us, we usually borrow at least 30 items a month, so I don't think they would mind even if anyone was paying attention to what is in my hand. 6y

What PERCENTAGE of the books on your shelves have you NOT READ, but fully intend to someday? Mine is about 85% I love the hunt and accumulating them...GREAT EXPECTATIONS get it?

Landslide 85% sounds about right... 6y
Jess_Franzino I‘d say about 20%. I tend to buy books as I read them, or, if I get them in swaps or as gifts, I read them right away. Still, there are a few I haven‘t gotten around to yet. 6y
zsuzsanna_reads I'd say 15 to 20%. I do also regularly sort the books on my shelves and give ones I don't think I'll reread to friends or the charity shop. 6y
See All 15 Comments
LA_Mead Yup. I‘m around 80% ...and I just discovered Book Outlet, so that number is about to go up lol 6y
Crazeedi Probably 50%, I keep promising myself I am going to only read them🤨😏 6y
Jobe @Jess_Franzino You sound like a normal person.👍🏼Wish I could do that 6y
Jobe @zsuzsanna_reads I think you are normal reader 6y
Jobe @LA_Mead OK good I‘m glad to know I‘m not the only one.😁 6y
Jobe @Crazeedi So that means I‘m not the only one that says it to myself. And then off I go to buy more books 6y
Reviewsbylola Probably about the same as you! I don‘t have a lot of room, so I don‘t keep books after I‘ve read them unless they‘re part of a collection or I really loved them. 6y
Ilirwen I‘ve read most of my books. Whenever I get a few books, for my birthday or Christmas, I read them right away. 6y
Jobe @Landslide Glad to know I am not the only one 6y
Landslide No, you're not 6y
Crazeedi @Jobe exactly😉😏 6y

????????????????????????????????????????

Lel2403 I do, but only in pencil ✏️ 6y
RainyDayReading Not usually. I usually only write in the book when it‘s a postal club book. 6y
Lovesbooks87 No I don't, I always donate my books when I am done with them. I did write in a book of mine for the first time when I joined a post markup book club! 6y
See All 31 Comments
TrishB No 😱 6y
ElaineHowlin I always use index tabs and sometimes highlight and write notes. 6y
zzz Nope 6y
Andrea4 Hell yes! 6y
Naj I use sticky notes and sometimes underline in pencil. 6y
RavenLovelyReads All the time! 6y
GingerAntics All the time. Then again, in my field you pretty much have to. I usually colour code my highlights and then use similarly colored pens for notes; although, later that can sometimes seem like madness if the colour coding was specific to a paper instead of a topic like my highlights in my copy of Shakespeare‘s sonnets. (edited) 6y
tournevis In academic book, flags galore. In other books, noooooo! 6y
Heretherebedragons Ditto what @tournevis said. I will use post-it notes though so I can go back and pull out quotes for my journal if something resonates with me. 6y
TheSpineView No! Never! That is what sticky notes are for! 6y
BooksBecomeYou Yes! It adds life to your library! I also sign and date the last page when I finish a book. 6y
BooksBecomeYou I should say, it adds life to your *personal* library. I don't write in other people's books. 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz Nevaaaaaa... that's sacrilegious!!!!! 6y
BooknerdsLife Yesss!! I like to highlight the parts I love and occasionally with write down a little note for myself 😊 I think it adds character to the book & shows that it's well loved ..in a way. 😊💕 6y
AmandaEve Yes I always find those are the ones I‘ll reread again and again! 6y
MotionChickness Nooooo! I take pictures with my phone! 6y
readordierachel Nope. I'll use sticky notes. 6y
NeedsMoreBooks In academic books, yes. In other books, no. I usually put a sticky note. 6y
Literary_Siren Never!! 6y
MimiLovesToRead Sometimes, yes. If it belongs to you. Not a thing wrong with it. 6y
Jobe @BooknerdsLife exactly! 6y
Jobe @Naj Great idea 6y
Crystalblu Mostly it cookbooks. I like to note the changes I made that elevated the dish. 6y
Pam.Kokomo Yes to all but drawing! 6y
UCLAoso Yes! I flag and mark up my nonfiction reads, dense fiction and of course my favored reads🤓 @BooksBecomeYou, I love your idea of signing and dating when you finish a book! Borrowing this idea!! 6y
BooksBecomeYou @Crystalblu My mom came up with this idea. Sometimes she adds a tiny drawing to represent how the book made her feel. I look forward to seeing them when I borrow books from her. 6y
lil_sips Yes all the time. I love underlining or highlighting the lines that I love :) 6y
BooknerdsLife @Jobe 🤗 I use my daughter‘s crayons and sticky notes for highlights so it won‘t damage the books 6y

A quote from this book: “We smile at a sentence by Jane Austen or savor an epithet by James Joyce because their words cause the scales to drop from our eyes. Suddenly we see the world afresh”😍 #booksaboutbooks
THE SCALES DROP FROM OUR EYES. Wow! What literature does for us! Helps us to see the world from all different perspectives.👏👏👏👏

vivastory I love Michael Dirda! 6y
GabrielleDubois Must be an interesting book. The first time I read that words cause the scales to drop from our eyes, it was in a Théophile Gautier's book from 1835 or so... How many female writers are there compared to male writers in this book? 🙂 6y
Jobe @GabrielleDubois Yeah I just checked it‘s very heavily male 6y
GabrielleDubois @Jobe And though there were a lot of great female writers in the past centuries...! I'm currently trying to read them, it's so different from male writers, and it's so important to see ourselves and the world around us through female words. I've always been said that female stories were most often boring, but it's not. I'm 51, am glad I can still change my mind and discover and learn! 🙂 6y

One of six bookshelves in my house. My husband will put one together begrudgingly, but he will anytime I ask. He is a keeper. Most of the books on the shelf have not been read. For me it‘s like the feeling of 10-year-old gets sitting next to a Christmas tree full of wrapped packages each one a wonderful present, yet to be discovered! #bookcollector #prettybooks #toberead

kalinichta I don't do that because I am selfish and went the book to be mine forever. 😆 6y
readinginthedark I don't do it so much for the value as if I haven't read the book yet and am not sure if I'll keep it. 😕 I'm trying to be better about not keeping books I won't reread, and I want any future owner to feel like the book is just as much theirs as it was mine. 6y
Jobe @readinginthedark I tend to think about my family and who might end up with the book overtime. Also I hate to find books at estate sales that have the owners name included with the autograph. Just the autograph by itself is much better for me 6y

This is a psychological thriller, I rarely read this genre, but did so so for my book club. I pestered other book club members about whether they had finished WOMAN IN THE WINDOW, simply so I could talk to them about it. This book will stay with you for a while after you have finished it! #bookclub
