I participated in the 4th of July parade with American Heritage Girls and their color guard, with kids on decorated bikes, parents/grandparents, city council, fire department, and police officers. In the pouring rain we marched with rain gear, greeting those who stepped out on their porches to wave 🇺🇸
However the fireworks show has been cancelled due to rain☔️Also 2 pix of glorious clouds this week!

“Most of us are mysteries unto ourselves, and part of our lifelong quest is an effort to understand our authentic selves and our purpose.”
A delightful afternoon read! It‘s 1931 and calling themselves the Queens of Crime, 5 mystery writers (including Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers) band together to test their prowess at solving a recent murder of a young nurse named May Daniels. HF 5🌟

Smil explains how manufacturing became a fundamental force behind America‘s economic, strategic, and social dominance. He describes American manufacturing‘s rapid rise at the end of the 19th century, its consolidation and modernization between WW1 and WW2, its role as an enabler of mass consumption after 1945, and its decline. “You weren‘t best friends. Not like some moms and daughters.” Did we need to be best friends to entitle me to grieve? If that was true, why did my blood feel like wet concrete churning through the barrel of a mixing truck?”

“Well, we are the stars", Joan said. "And the stars are us. Every atom in our bodies was once out there. Was once a part of them. To look at the night sky is to look at part of who you once were, who you may one day be.”
A PICK. But not sure if it was of the same caliber that I usually expect from TJR…the relationships were good though. And I found myself rooting for Joan, Vanessa, and Frances-truly great humans.

Shapiro is a common-sense writer who relies on scientific research. I was hoping for more recently published essays (this was written 2019) but many of the ideologies and inconsistencies of which he speaks are still relevant. He sees “America as the story of a nation founded on eternally good and true principles, principles only fully realized for many Americans at the cost of blood and sweat and death.”
