Alma‘s ex, the protector of Silverpool, has been killed. A powerful magical relic has been stolen. And the magical authorities think she knows more than she is telling them.
Alma needs to work out who really killed them, and who stole the relic to clear her name, and so she isn‘t killed in the process.

pickTwins Kizzy and Lil are gathering mushrooms to make a celebration stew for their 17th birthday when they realize their Traveler family‘s caravan has been attacked and set on fire. All of the children are caught and enslaved, to be used at the whim of a cruel Settler Boyar (like a czar).
The first 2/3 were my favorite part, I didn‘t realize where the story was going or that it was a retelling, and that took a little away from it for me. Still 👍.
pickThe tension of this book was built two ways, first with truly harrowing home invasion. Then with an investigation so misogynistic that it couldn‘t be real, when you know sadly it totally could be. Tense and upsetting, it wasn‘t an easy read, but it had a very satisfying conclusion. 4⭐️

pickEnjoyed the audiobook while getting things done around the house. My (almost) 11 year old wanted me to read it as he enjoyed it. Good for the Halloween Season, for sure.

Not my favorite in the Thursday Murder Series, which is a bummer because the others really all have felt like favorites.
Osman has his excellent prose, the characters have their funny mannerisms & ways of looking at the world, and the mystery is twisty enough to keep me guessing.
So, I‘m not sure what didn‘t hit that same place for me as past books. One I‘d still recommend, but just not my favorite from a really excellent series.
