An immigration novel without the sensationalism. It‘s an introspective narrative of sacrifice, secrets, and familial bonds.

I‘ll need to do the bulk of my reading in the first part of the month because I don‘t know how much reading I‘ll do once March Madness 🏀 is upon us!
• Giovanni‘s Room - James Baldwin
• La Ciudad y los Perros - Mario Vargas Llosa
• House of Salt and Sorrows - R. Erin Craig
• New York - Edward Rutherford
• La Isla Bajo el Mar - Isabel Allende
• Middlemarch (not pictured) - George Eliot
The Adventures of the China Iron is a subversive retelling of the epic poem of the Argentinian gaucho Martín Fierro. This book unfolds the story of Fierro‘s wife, who in the original poem is left behind when Fierro goes to war. In this alternative retelling, Fierro‘s wife, “la China Iron” is liberated by his departure and embarks on an adventure of self discovery and sexual awakening.

Death was the rule, life the exception.
A beautiful spot to discuss this month‘s Spanish book club selection #sunburnedinnovember
Such a crazy story! Carreyrou relates the genesis of Theranos, the environment and the decisions leading to the launch of a medical device that was in no way reliable. I only wish I could have learned more about Theranos's founder, Elizabeth Holmes but she remains a mysterious figure throughout the book. I am curious as to whether she truly believed in her device or if she was simply delusional about its concept vs engineering it.
Finally got around to scoping out the cookie shop that recently opened up in my neighborhood. Delicious cookies and a good reading spot, I‘ve a feeling I‘ll be a frequent visitor.
I‘ve heard such great things about The Book Thief - I couldn‘t pass up on today‘s ebook deal (only $2.99 on Amazon!)
I enjoyed this read but not as much as I expected. The author is witty but I had lofty expectations - this seems to be the norm with books categorized as humorous. So it is likely an it‘s not you, it‘s me situation since despite my tepid review I now follow the author on Twitter.
I‘ve never read a book by this author but this is the October selection for my Meet Up book club. As a side note, this evening‘s sky was just beautiful (though it‘s hard to tell in my pic) #currentlyreading
Retelling of Taming of the Shrew. I‘ve heard mixed reviews but I still want to read it - perhaps when I‘m in the mood for a light read.
Didn't mind waiting for my friend to arrive for dinner #brewsandbooks
Dark, twisty revenge story. It is told from multiple POVs so you learn the motivations of all main players. Sooo good!!!
Wish I‘d read this before the accusations leveled at Diaz were exposed as it initially detracted from my reading. I loved this book but feel somewhat guilty for it.
A powerful read, a novel about slavery and time travel and about the cost people pay to survive dehumanizing conditions and how the cost can be regarded by some as weakness or submission, but on closer inspection one can see the strength and determination it takes to hold on.

I loved the message of hope and need to challenge ourselves and stay present, "We are never so wise as when we live in this moment." There's a passage where Kalanithi looks back on his overnight hikes & it took me back to my first time visiting Yosemite and the overwhelming recognition/sensation I had of being so intrinsically connected to the universe while at the same time realizing that I am just a speck in its grandeur and passage through time
This book...I slugged through the beginning of the book and eventually got sucked in by ‘The Magus‘ only to feel like I got thrown off the ride just as I was about to reach the end. I felt as manipulated by the author as Nick was by Conchis, was that the point?
Sneaking in a little ‘me time‘. Love Saturday mornings 📖☕️❤️
