The Resurrectionist | A. Rae Dunlap
post image
Mehso-so

YA Coming of Age/Dark Academia Historical Fiction set in mid-19th century Edinburgh with a M/M romance sideplot

James Willoughby has recently decided to become a surgeon and to study at the University of Edinburgh. An excellent decision for the son of a noble family if it wasn't for the family lacking in funds. In order to afford his position in an anatomist's course, the resident resurrectionist Aneurin offers the naïve James a job... ⬇️

julesG ... as look-out. With his financial situation getting worse, James has to join the resurrectionists himself.

I liked this story better than Schwartz's Anatomy: A Love Story. For one, the main character's speech and behaviour fits the historical context - down to the point that he thinks his sister Edith is better off than him, because she doesn't need to find her place in society, she has the advantage of only having to marry well and ... ⬇️

Since the story is set at the time Burke and Hare were 'working' as resurrectionists, the addition of a mystery/true crime element to the plot didn't come as a surprise.

julesG The writing, like the pacing, is a bit hit and miss. There are paragraphs with period appropriate dialogue or apt descriptions, but also rather bland phrases that reminded me of fanfiction.

I liked the dark atmosphere and that the author kept the novel as historically and thematically accurate as possible. 3/5🌟

On the first day of #JumpStart2025 & the last of #20in4 #readathon I managed a few chapters of Silkworm & a few hours of Leather & Lark while #audiojournaling all the challenges I‘m doing this year. Which I‘m overdoing. Again🤦🏻‍♀️. Managed a decent time for 20in4. Loving both books, really enjoying the sequel to Butcher & Blackbird, already have the 3rd preordered on Audible! How‘s your New Years Day? #OutWithTheOldInWithTheNew #YearEnd

Andrew65 A brilliant time, well done and thanks for Playing along. 🥳🥳🥳🙌🎯📚❤️ 20h

Book 3 of the Saffron Everleigh series, my third & final #Roll100 book for December & probably my last finished book of 2024 since it‘s 10:30 PM. I struggled a bit with this one & all the characters, but I really enjoy Saffron, her roommate & her colleague/love interest. The science & the 1920s London setting are great too. I find I really enjoy historical mysteries, ⬇️

DebinHawaii … & I‘ll keep reading this one. 1d

The Verifiers was one of my favorite books of 2022 so I was happy to see a Book 2 in the Claudia Lim series. I got notified that my library Libby had the ebook & audiobook & I got them both & traded off. While I didn‘t love this one as much as the first book (as it seemed a bit more muddled), I love Claudia the MC & enjoyed the smart & dry humor & will read the next one.

My last #serieslove2024 this Slaughter particularly filled with horrible people doing horrible things . But I liked it! Bad reading year for me, I usually read 90-100 books , I even missed my abbreviated Goodreads goal of 75 . 😞Still, Litsy & reading gives me joy, I‘ll be sticking with that in the new year, less focused on goals. #OutWithTheOldInWithTheNew #20in4

Doing some breakfast & coffeeshop reading before running errands on this NYE day. Tonight I‘ll be shutting myself in the house away from fireworks smoke as all good asthmatics with a sinus thing should do. 😷😮‍💨🤧😉

I‘m starting this one, my third #Roll100 pick but doubt I‘ll get it done before tomorrow.

PuddleJumper That's a good looking book 2d

Last finished book for 2024, probably.

Non-fiction

Preston collected formerly published stories of his about mysteries and murders in this volume. Among them are the story of the Money Pit on Oak Island, or the strange murders of couples in Tuscany, and the titular Lost Tomb (KV5).

Interesting to read and, this is why it took me twice as long as usual to finish, it sent me down several Wikipedia/Google rabbit holes.

Andrew65 Excellent 👏👏👏 I love it when books do this to me. (edited) 2d

Spent today listening to this brilliantly filthy & gory audiobook romance. When they say “trigger warnings” they mean TRIGGER WARNINGS!!! Sloane spends her free time hunting down serial killers & taking them out in creative ways. But when a job goes wrong, Rowan rescues her from a tsunami of maggots & dares her to a yearly game of who bags the killer first. Funny, steamy & sweet, but above all, bloody. #20in4 #readathon #OutWithTheOldInWithTheNew

Listened to Levar Burton read this short story about a girl asking for a miracle.

It's part of the Dead Djinn Universe; steampunk Cairo where mechanical Angels, Djinn and, amongst others, boiler-plate eunuchs live among the human inhabitants of the city.
