Flashback | Dan Simmons

Pickpick

A dystopian thriller set in a future where the U.S. is near total collapse, and most of the population is addicted to a drug called Flashback.
The tone of this story was heavy. It took a bit to get through. It was well written. The murder investigation conducted by the MC, Nick Bottom-ex detective and flashback addict-kept me going to the end.

Finished this Tuesday, my 3rd book for #Roll100 April, roll#6
It‘s my second book from Alderman & while I didn‘t like it as much as The Power, it was thought-provoking & interesting & I thought the twists the story took were well done. The survivalists‘ posts & comments I found distracting & while they were meant to help tell the story & give context to what was going on, they didn‘t add much. A soft pick.

Andrew65 Doing great 👏👏👏 1d
MrsMalaprop The Power was so good. I read Disobedience a few months ago & liked it. Not as good as The Power though. 1d

Finished the last chapters on the plane yesterday but as I was 3/4 done, I‘m counting it as an April book. This was on my #AuldLangSpine list from @Itchyfeetreader (I‘m trying for one per month) & while I didn‘t love it as much as the others I‘ve read from the list, it gets a pick. The writing is gorgeous but pensive, even a little depressing & I found myself wanting to shake both MCs, a pair of somewhat ⬇️

DebinHawaii …star-crossed lovers who just can‘t get on the same page at the same time & as much time as they spend talking, don‘t communicate all that well. Since I have never found a true romantic soulmate, this probably bugged me more than it might others . Despite it all, it was still worth the read for the quality of the writing & a soft pick. 2d

‘What is she really—human or beast? Which tastes sweeter—blood or chocolate?‘

I read this once a while back after seeing the movie. I remember being disappointed because it was nothing like the film. It‘s been a while so I couldn‘t remember it too well. I really enjoyed this reread of it. I wouldn‘t mind checking out the author‘s other books.

Finished in April but I‘m behind in posting. Book 6 in the Lady Sherlock series. One to go before the new one in June. I liked this one overall, the mystery was intriguing & the setting of a cult sanctuary & I love the sexy sassiness of relationship of Holmes & Ash but things were a bit disjointed & it will be interesting to see how things pick up or change for Holmes in the next one. So ⬇️

DebinHawaii …maybe a slightly softer pick than the last one. Still I enjoy the series. I listened to this one on audio as it came in quicker through library hold. I think the next one is only available in e-book. 2d

Finished yesterday for #SeasonalCozies I am afraid this just wasn‘t a good book. It‘s a risk I take when I go for first in series, cheap or free (this was a Kindle Unlimited title) but it‘s disappointing nonetheless. I went between wanting to shake & throat punch the MC who was kind of an idiot. Then there was the dialogue which was not even close to natural. I highlighted a part where the⬇️

DebinHawaii … the male love interest needlessly mansplained dry ice to the MC but then I returned the book without writing it down. Just bad. I won‘t be reading the next one. There‘s better gardening cozies out there!

Read along with @TheAromaofBooks & some friends for a book a month Trixie Belden readalong (we need a hashtag!) It‘s been a few years since I reread the series & this first book which sets it up with Trixie meeting poor-little-rich teen Honey Wheeler & them discovering runaway Jim Frayne hiding in the old mansion. I forgot Brian & Mart (Trixie‘s brothers) are away working at a boys camp for ⬇️

DebinHawaii … the summer so we don‘t get to meet them yet. The first book mainly sets the stage for coming books, although shades of Nancy Drew (& my #NancyNogginKnockout counter or #NNK ) both Trixie & Jim got hit on the head from a dive & a ladder fall respectively!! 🫣🤕 Gleeos! Looking forward to book 2 next month! (edited) 4d

Finished last night for #ChildrensClassicRead2024 It was fun to reread Pippi, it‘s been decades & the books & movies were something I shared with my dad. As a child I wanted to hang out with Pippi, as an adult, she tired me out! 😉 I need to see if I can find the movies now.

UwannaPublishme I‘d love to see those movies again too! 4d

😐

Bit underwhelming and an abrupt ending.

Gorgeous psychological descriptions of what goes on in Edward's mind, but all in all I was missing something.

Read with #SheSaid for April, it‘s a well-researched & well-written look at why the Second Amendment was set up to fail Blacks from the get-go. The author expertly pulls facts & data together & it had me both horrified & angry.

The last sentence says it all “The Second is lethal; steeped in anti-Blackness, it is the loaded weapon laying around just waiting for the hand of some authority to put it to use.”
