4.75/5⭐️ (Close to excellent)

Dina is asked to protect a race that is victim to what amounts to ethnic cleansing.

The full-cast, graphic audio accounts for much or the excellence of this #audiobook, but the story/premise/world is also excellent. I love the characters. While the first two books felt almost like stand alones, this book ends up making connections from previous ones and ends with a tease of the next.

Next book for #LiteraryCrew hosted by @Librarybelle . My edition has 528 pages so it will work for the #chunksterchallenge (bitsy chunkster) and #allergictochunksters too! 🎉

I don‘t know if #recommendsday is still a thing here, but I sure could use some recommendations. I‘ve been reading the Innkeeper Chronicles by Ilona Andrews and really liking it. I‘m wondering if any #Littens have other urban fantasy suggestions. The fewer vampires the better (if that even exists.)

Scochrane26 I just read A Touch of Darkness, which I think is considered urban fantasy. If you don‘t mind some spice that‘s more on erotica side, it was good. 2d
Sace It sounds interesting! Thanks! 2d
audraelizabeth You could try the mercy thompson series. 2d
See All 22 Comments
Leniverse I second the Mercy Thompson series. There are some vampires there, but they are side characters. Also "Rivers of London". I don't recall any vampires in those, and they are amazing on audio if that's your thing at all. 2d
Luke-XVX I‘m currently reading the 1st book in the Sandman Slim series, only 60 pages in and no vampires so far…. 2d
5feet.of.fury Ilona Andrews has been some of my favorite urban fantasy, if you haven‘t read Burn for Me I‘d suggest that! 2d
5feet.of.fury And I‘ll add another rec for Mercy Thompson, I‘m not caught up, but I keep meaning to get back to it, loved the early books! 2d
Sace @Leniverse I‘ve had the Rivers of London on my shelf forever! @audraelizabeth Thanks! And my library has it available on audio! 2d
Sace @5feet.of.fury Burn For Me recently caught my attention. Thanks! 2d
Sace @Luke-XVX Intriguing! 2d
wanderinglynn Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels series is one of my faves. I also love the Mercy Thompson series & the Alpha & Omega series by Patricia Briggs (1st books Moon Called/Cry Wolf), the Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne (Hounded), Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris (Dead Until Dark), Dante Valentine series by Lilith Saintcrow (Working for the Devil), Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neill (Some Girls Bite) 2d
wanderinglynn Ghost Hunters Mystery by Victoria Laurie (What‘s a Ghoul to do?), Southern Witch series by Kimberly Frost (Would Be Witch), World of the Lupe by Eileen Wilkes (Tempting Danger) - I have more (this is my favorite fantasy sub-genre). 😀 2d
Sace @wanderinglynn the Iron Druid and the Southern Witch series sound good! Thanks! 2d
MeganAnn Echoing all the love for the Mercy Thompson series! I‘m hoping to do a reread of that series sometime later this year. Also one of my favorites is the Hollows series by Kim Harrison (book 1 tagged). It does have some vampires but our main character Rachel is a witch and the world is filled with all kinds of magical creatures including pixies (Jenks, her pixie friend is my favorite), demons, werewolves, elves, etc… 2d
MeganAnn Another of my favorites is The Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon. No vampires. Shannon creates such a richly detailed & unique alternate London that I find fascinating. Definitely read the author‘s revised 10th anniversary editions released last year as she went through & revised the text to make it the story she wanted to write but wasn‘t a good enough writer to pull off at 19 when it was originally published. 2d
MeganAnn @wanderinglynn screenshotting your list so I can look for all the ones I haven‘t read yet! Urban fantasy used to be a favorite genre of mine as well and I‘ve been itching to get back into it recently. 2d
Sace @MeganAnn thanks for the suggestions! 2d
willaful I really enjoyed C.E. Murphy's series that begins with Heart of Stone. 2d
wanderinglynn @MeganAnn totally agree on Kim Harrison‘s Hollows series. And I‘m adding Samantha Shannon to my TBR. 👍🏻 2d
CoffeeK8 I‘ll second mercy Thomas and the other Ilona Andrews. But I also want to recommend K.M. Shea‘s Magiford Series 2d
Sace @CoffeeK8 Oh it sounds really good! Thanks! 2d
Sace @willaful Ooooo…interesting! 2d

2.75/5⭐️

I read this one for my January #bookspin (3). I had read the first two in the trilogy about 2 years ago, but the second book was a real “pan”. While I‘m glad I finished the series, this one was just barely a so-so. I don‘t like the characters being separated because it made a disjointed story for me. I liked some of the plot lines better than others. By the end I was tired of the book.

I‘m rethinking my rating system since StoryGraph (and most people) use a five star rating. I‘ve gone from C.A.P.E to C.A.R.P.E. The “R” being for readability (font choice and size, complexity, good wordy or bad wordy). Obviously had to change my reading journal page too 😂

DogMomIrene Well obviously! Are you liking SG? I‘ve been loving it. I created a personal reading challenge for short works that I want counted toward my overall stats, but not my yearly stats. Love the flexibility of their features. 4d
Sace @DogMomIrene I love SG! I‘ve been on it since late 2020, but I don‘t think I use half the features 😂 I‘m trying to use it a little more intentionally this year. 4d

3/4⭐️ (very good)
In this installment Dina is asked to allow her inn to be the location of a tricky peace summit. The cook is a new character and I‘m glad it appears he will be a new addition to the inn. I will definitely be giving the third one a go. My library has several of the books as a full cast audio which I loved.

Also works for #LitsyAtoZ #LetterS. @Texreader I think I‘m going to try the title only route.

I still love the characters and the setting. The writing is not full of itself and fussy. I was a little disappointed that some storylines from the third book seemed to have been dropped. Hopefully they will get picked up later. Mma Ramotswe‘s cases weren‘t as interesting, but I appreciated getting to know more about Mma Makutsi.

2.25/4 ⭐️ (the lower end between ok and good)

Started with the audiobook but finished up with the kindle edition. Lord Wimsey is one to run on. What? The antisemitism and racial slurs make it hard to say I liked the book, but it I did enjoy the mystery and the wrap up. I might even give more Lord Wimsey books a try. I‘m glad this author was chosen for #authoramonth.

#LitsyAtoZ #LetterW

tpixie I‘m about 16% in on my kindle. I agree, it‘s very anti- Semitic, which makes it difficult to read. Sadly, I am reminded of the antisemitism of Sally Rooney (Intermezzo), Percival Everett (James) & other authors who have recommended banning Jewish books & authors & have refused to have their books translated into Hebrew or sent to Israel. My heart goes out to both Jews & Palestinians. I am against banning books of all kind for any reason. 3w

Dikembe‘s story was my main interest. I didn‘t really care that much about Lowra (though I was glad she found peace). Oddly this book both felt a little longish and rushed. I have no idea how to explain that. I want a sequel in which Caroline‘s story is told.

On my C.A.P.E scale this book got the lowest marks for Characters and Atmosphere. Lowra brought down the Character marks.

Sace @DogMomIrene right? And since The StoryGraph gives average time to read a book stats those books that lingered made that stat artificially long (I‘m a slow reader but not that slow). It will be nice to pause books. Though I‘m still hoping for the option to hide the average reading time stat. 1mo

I was really interested in this #LittensLoveRomance pick, but I‘m trying really hard to cut down on book purchases and spending in general. Lo and behold I go to check it out (again) and it‘s only $2.99 on kindle AND I have some credits so it‘s only $0.74! I couldn‘t let the opportunity pass. Now let‘s see if I can read it in the next two weeks!

julesG It's a quick read!! Congratulations on the bargain. 1mo
lil1inblue I can't get my hands on one of my holiday TBR reads, so I've considering replacing it with this. This seals the deal. Thanks for sharing the sale! 1mo
Sace @lil1inblue you‘re welcome! 1mo
Sace @julesG quick reads are the best! 1mo

#Two4Tuesday Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView

1. My morning coffee and scrolling through Litsy.

2. I have several books going at the moment and I‘m not sure any of the MCs could be described as having a “best trait” since they are all kinda flawed. I‘ll just go with Nancy Drew and say her best trait is determination.

Faster paced than the last couple I read for the #NancyDrewBR. This one was a fun one. Thanks for hosting @Librarybelle

I finished it a day late but I enjoyed this one. I went back and forth between audio and kindle. It‘s very melodramatic with strong Perils of Pauline vibes. Perfect escapist and atmospheric read. Like others have said, it was extra fun to be reading it at the same time of year as in the book. My winter break is coming up and I‘m going to try to talk hubby into watching the 1939 movie with me.

#hitchtoscreen @JenlovesJT47

JenlovesJT47 Yay! 💚 1mo
Sace @JenlovesJT47 Will we be reading Rebecca? That‘s one I‘ve always meant to read. 1mo
JenlovesJT47 Yes, Strangers On A Train is the one we‘re reading starting today, then I‘m going to do Rebecca after the next book probably. There are 3 Daphne Du Maurier books and I want to space them out a little bit. Rebecca is so good!! 1mo
Sace @JenlovesJT47 I had started Strangers on a Train but decided to put it on pause and listen to Jamaica Inn. I‘m glad I did. It was enjoyable. I‘ll start back with Strangers this week. It‘s also really good. Can‘t wait for Rebecca! 1mo

Jeff Hayes is still brilliant. I still love Princess Donut, but I didn‘t like this level as much. Mordechai was mostly missing and when he was around he was this weird froglike thing with a weird croaky thing going on. The tangle also confused me. Still a pick though!

DogMomIrene Felt the same way. It was hearing the Cookbook entries from previous crawlers that made the book more enjoyable for me. 1mo
Sace @DogMomIrene I liked that aspect of it too. 1mo

I‘m going to attempt to finish this audiobook before December 14th for #hitchtoscreen. I‘m liking it so far (I‘m only on chapter 2). I think I‘m glad that I have not read Rebecca since I‘ve seen a couple of reviews that have said this one isn‘t as good as Rebecca.

My goal in 2025 is to be a little less lurky and actually participate in the buddy reads on Litsy. Many thanks to all the hosts and organizers that keep me on the tag lists!

That said, here are the authors I plan to read for the #authoramonth. I already own books by them or are readily available on Hoopla (no wait list!).

Soubhiville That‘s great! 1mo
Sace @Soubhiville Littens have great taste and I find that the buddy reads take me out of my comfort zone and discover great new reads. 1mo
CatLass007 FYI, folks… Six Kate Quinn novels are currently free on Audible. I‘m hoping they stay that way for a while.🤞 1mo

Librarybelle Yay!! Would you like me to just tag you for these specific books, or would you like to be on the main tag list? Completely up to you! 2mo
Sace @Librarybelle I would love to be a permanent resident on the tag list if that‘s ok with you. 2mo
Librarybelle Totally fine with me! Some do not like being tagged all of the time and others do, so thought I would check. 2mo

CatLass007 I put in my library hold on 12/08, but the wait is several months. I already had my eye on Kate Quinn, so I‘m looking forward to this. I may not get to read it with the rest of the group in April, but I‘ll definitely read it. Kate Quinn is the April #AuthorAMonth also. I like the way that worked out!! Also, her four book Empress of Rome series is free on Audible. Let‘s keep our fingers crossed that it stays that way for a while.🤞 (edited) 1mo
Sace @CatLass007 I have not heard of the Empress of Rome series. I just added the first book to my library. 1mo
