Pub Day in the UK is March 27th

Really enjoyed book 4 in the Lady Astronaut series. A base on Mars has been established and the first "Martians" have moved in. Among the usual problems of working in an uninhabitable environment the members of the first Mars mission, to establish the base, are keeping a secret.

Another strong entry in this series. Gender, race, but also culture and religion, as well as body autonomy play just as much a role ⬇️⬇️

julesG as who has jurisdiction on Mars and should it be named a colony.

I seriously hope this wasn't the last book in the series.

She's a fantasy writer, but nobody knows. He's a billionaire executive and doesn't want to be like his father, but actually is. They've known each other since childhood. She's working for his company, but doing a piss-poor job. He's trying to change her.

They both need to change and both need to address their problems.

Characters with disorders.
Toxic workplace. Harassment and assault.
Stayed for the #audiobook.

Baseball sports romance.

Baseball player and his wife fall out over him feeling betrayed by her faking it. She wants divorce, he wants to get back together. Fortunately, his teammates have formed a book club where they read romance books as manuals for their own HEA.

Liked it overall, but there were some holes in the main couple's timeline.

This was not what I expected the novel to be. No, it wasn't bad!

Connie distrusts nice guys, they will do a 180 sooner than later and hurt her. Also, her mother told her what men are looking for in a woman and she tries her best to be that kind of woman (like contacts instead of glasses, heels not flats), although deep down she is a different person.

⬇️⬇️

#NetGalley #ARC #MountARC

Low pick

julesG Beck loves bow ties, is a cinnamon roll/sunshine character and inexperienced when it comes to women. His outward appearance and behaviour make him nerdy, and I kept wondering whether he was supposed to be neurodiverse.

Beck and Connie live across from each other and often meet in the hallway or lift. When Connie asks about Beck's wife, the latter acts strange. Soon Connie finds out about the wife ⬇️
1w
julesG ...about the wife being an invention to make Beck look more "normal", but it's hard for him to keep up the charade. To make life for Beck easier Connie agrees to play his wife on a 14-day writing retreat both are attending and lay the groundwork for a divorce.

What I liked about the book was that both MCs had issues to overcome. Beck is secretly very confident, but projects an aura of haplessness that sometimes turns him into a doormat. ⬇️
1w
julesG Connie needs to unlearn what her mother and society told her and become herself. Both do not trust that the other person might be attracted to them beyond the physical.

This is where the story dragged for me. They both tell each other their wants and feelings, they tell each other that they are into the other one, yet both are so jaded from previous experiences that they don't trust in what the other says. ⬇️
1w
julesG Being in Connie's spiralling mind (first person POV, stream of consciousness-y narration) all the time made this very repetitive.

That all said, the novel was compelling to read, I couldn't put it down once I had started. But I nearly yelled at Connie several times to get her head out of her $%&/ and trust that when Beck says he is into her he actually means it, because the guy can't lie.

Kianthe and Reyna are days away from their wedding day. The whole town is working towards creating the wedding of the century. Now just add a few baby dragons, a coup to overthrow Queen Tilaine, Kianthe's parents and her childhood friend, the dastardly Pirate Dreggs and his crew,... Balibee146 My favourite thing about the Moist Von Lipwig series is the good amount of Vetinari we get. I love the way he appropriates Mr Fusspot, yes he wants to hold on to him as the bank Chairman; but I have a sneaking suspicion he also really wanted the little doggie 😊 2w
julesG @Balibee146 Agree, more Vetinari is nice. And that's how I read it too, Vetinari was looking forward to having a doggie. 2w

BarbaraJean I really enjoyed this one, but I agree with @kwmg40--not as much as I enjoyed Going Postal. I felt like the social/governmental satire was stronger there, plus more Adora Belle! Prior to this buddy read, I'd only read Mort and the Tiffany Aching books, so Vetinari is getting slowly revealed to me as we move along, and I'm finding him fascinating. @Balibee146 I agree, he wanted a doggie! julesG ... fall in love and live happily ever after.

There was potential here. Unfortunately, I found the world-building lacking, and would have liked to see more of the magic system. Instead I got a female MC that was so busy with telling me that she saw herself as ugly on every other page that I started to skim the pages very early on. Hazel used to write small town romcoms, but she's been struggling to bring pen to paper ever since her divorce. Maybe she needs to embrace the small town experience herself? On a whim she buys a house in a small town and once there asks one of her contractors to fake date her for research. What could possibly go wrong with a no-strings-attached-fake-dating-with-benefits agreement? And should I mention it's a small town that needs rescuing?

I'm not quite sure what all this #Steampunk story was about, but I liked it.

Piccadilly is a thief. He runs, is shot and ends up on an aether ship that's manned by a very diverse crew. The ship is harvesting phlogiston.

There is some romance. There's some spice. There are monstrous sky-kraken.

The #audiobook was great, especially since most of the story is in Piccadilly's pidgin.

CarolynM I started this one ages ago but didn‘t get very far. Sounds like I should try the audio. I want to bean AH completist🙂 1mo
julesG @CarolynM I'm glad I paired up ebook and audiobook. Audible offered me the audiobook for €2.95 since I already owned the eBook. 1mo
julesG @CarolynM I understand the completist approach. I'm working my way through the catalogue too. Also, there's a queer Moby Dick in space retelling by AH coming next year. 1mo
CarolynM Oooh, that‘s exciting. I was hoping for some more Spires stories (I think he said he was thinking about it a couple of years ago) but it looks like that‘s not going to happen☹️ 1mo

julesG This one hit different than when I first read it, even than when I last read it for #OokBOokClub, thanks to the current events. 1mo
BookmarkTavern Yeah, this one hits differently. So one of my favorite things that sticks out to me was Adora Belle saying “It's not a lie. It's what ought to have been true.” It reminded me of the idea that we read nonfiction to learn facts, but we read fiction to learn truth. 1mo
See All 9 Comments
julesG @BookmarkTavern Adora Belle might not have the biggest roll in the book, but she has a lot of wisdom to share. 1mo
BookmarkTavern @julesG She does! And after Sybil and Vimes, she and Moist are my favorite of Pratchett‘s romantic relationships. And it‘s because of how it‘s set up in this book. Adora Belle is a puzzle Moist can‘t figure out, a person he can‘t charm, and it evolves so beautifully into him caring what she thinks about him. That scene in the restaurant where he calms her down by teasing her about the proper knife? Chef‘s kiss. 1mo
kwmg40 I enjoyed this one but I agree that current events made me wince at some of the situations in the book. 1mo
julesG @kwmg40 I'm reading a Sci-Fi heist novel right now and the parallels to current events is astounding. As @BookmarkTavern said, we read fiction to learn the truth. 1mo
willaful It definitely hits me harder now than when I first read it. Especially given that his solution to a Trump seems to be.. a somewhat better Trump. 😬

julesG @AnishaInkspill Trust me, I wasn't too happy about the list of compulsory courses while at uni, but I'm glad that I was forced to cover this wide spectrum of European history now. catsuit_mango I am really curious about that book, I loved the Terra Ignota series and loved even more see Ada Palmer (and Jo Watson) conversation in my town, she is funny and full of the kind of weird knowledge that I enjoy. 1mo
julesG @catsuit_mango I haven't read her fiction yet, but the non-fiction (first two chapters) is good so far 1mo

#weekendreads @rachelsbrittain

One Night (Hand) Stand is an #ARC provided by the author. #RomCom

Five Broken Blades, #audiobook, I'm reading it because a friend recommended it. Incidentally, the same friend who recommended Fourth Wing and I think we really don't have the same taste in books. I'm underwhelmed.

Both first books in series.

RamsFan1963 I didn't like Fourth Wing, but I did enjoy Five Broken Blades. 1mo

Pickpick

#NetGalley #ARC #MountARC

'Jane' fell off her horse, lost her memories and was taken in by Jasper and his sisters. They care wonderfully for her and try to help her get her memories back. Of course there are feelings between 'Jane' and Jasper. Alas, it's complicated.

Liked the writing and characters and hope this'll be a series. There are a lot of family members who need a HEA.
