Preach!
Preach!
I wanted to like this book, but it's sort of all over the place. I kept reading just to find out what happened, but a lot was left unresolved.
"... when they entered the building immediately after the fire, they felt like they'd died and gone to see if Dante knew what he was writing about."
This is a book about a library fire, but really about loving libraries, books and the people who work with them and love them, too. It's sort of a painful read, all that destruction of books, even to hear the stories of the people who lived them so.
There are many wonderful essays here, but if you don't put down the whiskey and old movies, you won't know about them...
@24in48 #24in48 stack. It‘s got it all: fiction, non-fiction, essays, classics, recent works, a book about books/reading (I love those), something for every mood so I can switch it up depending on my mood. Though there is a very high probably that I‘ll start with The Stranger Beside Me then move on to the Ted Bundy documentary on Netflix. Must.not.
No one writes damaged folks finding redemption better..
My #lasagnahoggiveaway word is Gigil which is a Filipino word used to describe when something is so cute you want to squeeze it... 😄 @jmofo
This book tells the story of the Standing Rock protests, including first hand accounts of the people who lived it as well as the historical treatment of Native Americans. It shows the importance of fighting for what matters, even when corporate interests win.
I definetely don't need this book to be furious, but it's nice to not feel alone and to feel justified.
Still thinking about this one...
Seems to summarize the last year and a half pretty well..
Because my blood pressure isn't high enough, apparently...
This book broke my heart. Once people are ripped down enough, they will rip themselves apart...
It's never to late to make a new start (is that Paul Weller?)
Getting ready for the movie...
"For the better part of forty years she had genuinely believed that not doing things would somehow prevent regret, when, of course, the exact opposite was true."
#24in48 halfway stats. This is the best I've ever done. Weeeee.... tip: audio books because you can mutltask.
Pop quiz: JFK, RFK, or Joseph P Kennedy III?? #24in48 read
#24in48 hour 16 challenge: what is on my nightstand. Usually it's higher, but I moved some to my 24in48 TBR pile in the living room. And notebooks, always aome of my approximately 500,000 notebooks...
#24in48 checkin. A bit behind because I need to sleep and went to the gym.
#24in48 goals... plus Blood at the Root (audio). Some fiction, some non-fiction. Some heavy stuff balanced with A Cat About Time. Some of these I'd already started before...
Because some people don't know or can't remember.... #24in48
If you knew your date of death, how would it change your life or how you think about life? I reallly enjoyed this book & it's themes, especially that of transformation as part of life. When Varya thinks she hopes she can still surprise herself, I thought ah yes! The Klara story is the most well developed. We spend the most time with her, so the switch to Daniel seemed abrupt. If Eddie ever meets Varya as well, I guess we'll never know...
Smart people give me hope....
Liked it, but I didn't love it... I did appreciate that the writing style became more and more unstructured as Ruth's father became more and unraveled.
This is a character study of a girl growing up with a distant mother who is more focused on her looks and love life. The backdrop is WWI, which seems to have little impact on their lives, and neither woman allows it to distract them from their petty pursuits.
One of my favorite writers on one of my favorite topics, humans relationship with animals.
Since the 2017 version has been out for a bit, I figured it was time to get on with the 2016 one already. In his introduction, Franzen mentions 2 of my favorite fictional characters in the same sentence. It's not wrong to have high expectations, right? And Franzen... author of Purity? Did anyone read that one?
Intriguing story which came together a little too conveniently. Even though there are heavy topics, it felt flighty to me, possibly because I read it after the Nightingale. Meh...
Wow. Such a powerful book. All the little things we complain about are nothing, but also a reminder if what we must fight against.
80s nostalgia mixed with a dystopian virtual future. What's not to love? I'm not geeky enough to get all the sneaky references, I just know it. Answer the question, Claire!
There was someone else in the world who was witness to his sadness, and part of it.
What would you do if you lost what gave your life meaning... how do you go on, how do yuou get it back?
Narrator voice: she isn't @bookriot #riotgrams #currentlyreading
She wrote this in 2012, but it's true now, and it's probably been true since modern media evolved, or even before. How can we be better?? Again, I LOVE her....
"The weirdness included being called a liar... because I was rude to amazondotcom, the famous philanthropic organization dedicated to supporting publishers, encouraging writers, and greasing the skids if the American Dream". I love her SO much!
From an essay on her cat: if I wanted to be the center of the universe i'd have a dog. I simply adore her....
So my #24in48 @24in48 roundup.... nowhere near 24 hours, but I knew that because I worked on Sat, which meant I had to sleep Fri night. The goal was to read more than usual and at about 12 hours, mission accomplished! ❤
My cat is totally stressed out by the neighbors cat who roams outside and overgrooms. I want to find out what to do, so.... help me Jackson Galaxy! #24in48
