SEEKING ADVICE! I have agreed to take charge of reestablishing a local LGBTQ+ book club, with pretty much free reign to choose books/moderate/schedule how I‘d like. So, here are my questions. What has been your favorite queer book club read? And do you have any advice for moderating a book club and making it an engaging, welcoming, and fun experience?
This will be a new kind of challenge for me, but I‘m very excited for the possibilities. 📚

BookmarkTavern I really like the River of Teeth books by Sarah Gailey and The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Ann Older for some short reads. The first two books of The Last Binding trilogy by Freya Marske, for something a little more adult. Good luck! (edited) 1y
psalva @BookmarkTavern Thanks for these suggestions! These have all been on my radar but I haven‘t read them yet- I feel like genre fiction might be perfect to sprinkle throughout, and good to add in between more depressing or heavy reads 😊 1y
BookmarkTavern That‘s a great idea! You‘ll have to let us know what your first pick is! ❤️ 1y

Who's got really good YA suggestions for my book club? We're meeting tonight, and I think we're leaning towards picking something YA for our next meeting 😁

Thanks in advance!

Cailey_Mac I really liked A Curse So Dark & Lonely, Nocturna, These Broken Stars and if you want a contemporary I really enjoyed Rayne and Delilah‘s Midnight Matinee 5y
mom2bugnbee Anything by John Green. I think that his newest, Turtles All the Way Down, is his best and would be great to discuss, but so would Looking for Alaska & Paper Towns. 5y
See All 15 Comments
Melissa_J You‘ve probably read it already but I‘d go with 5y
Stacy_31 One of my favorites reads so far this year- 5y
mom2bugnbee Other thoughts: anything by Becky Albertali and/or Adam Silvera (they each have several, plus one they wrote together). The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X. R. Pan is one of the best books I've read in recent years. Dante & Aristotle Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Saaenz. Ruta Sepetys if you want historical fiction. (I have a 16yo & a 14yo, so there's a lot of YA in my house.) 5y
BookFreakOut My book club enjoyed Unwind, lots of discussion possibilities and it can stand alone (there are three others but they were written much later). 5y
LibrarianRyan I second Unwind. Fantastic book. Plus it is quite relevant to things happening today in the news. Think Handmaids tale. 5y
ShyBookOwl I third Unwind! So much to talk about in there. 5y
Laughterhp I think it‘s technically YA and it‘s really good! 5y
Laughterhp Or anything Sarah Dessen 💚 5y
TheKidUpstairs Thanks everyone for your suggestions! Small turnout tonight, so we'll be discussing next read online, but I've thrown a few of your suggestions into the ring! @Laughterhp @ShyBookOwl @LibrarianRyan @BookFreakOut @sherryvdh @mom2bugnbee @Stacy_31 @Melissa_J @Cailey_Mac @swishandflick 5y
Reggie I know it‘s a little late but it‘s pride month so maybe We Are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson or The Music of What Happens by Bill Konigsberg. 5y
TheKidUpstairs @Reggie I didn't even think about it being Pride month! But two of our top three choices so far involve LGBTQ MCs, so it all comes together! And thanks for the recommendations, definitely adding this one to the TBR 5y

The stellar @Krisjericho :

Help! I‘m a non-fiction & literary fiction gal. I like books that make me think & change my perspective. I read about race, gender, history, & making the world better. I‘m tired & sad. Need a break from heavy books. Need books that will add joy to my life. I‘ve read ones described as light & cozy. I‘ve found them unfulfilling & trite. Tell me your happy favorites. Fiction or non, kid or adult. #readersadvisory

BookNAround Happy is hard. There‘s less dramatic tension to write about. “All happy families...” and all that. I just finished Thanks a Thousand: A Gratitude Journey which was interesting. The Boys in the Boat is triumphant. I love Beverley Nichols‘ garden writing (not as weird as it sounds) for humor. I look to Angela Thirkell for comfort reading. I‘ll keep thinking on more. 6y
sherryvdh Makes me happy without coming across the way you describe, I think. It's just about friendship and books, and those two things are very fulfilling to me. 6y
CouronneDhiver I‘ve got nothing - I‘m not a happy book gal. 6y
See All 21 Comments
Jennifer3 I like humor when feel that way, so I recommend the Shopaholic series or for nonfiction Boys in the Boat or The Boys of Winter. 6y
theshrinkette This series is delightful 6y
ravenlee This one and its sequel are fast and really good, kind of feel-good without being sappy or dumb. 6y
danibolahood I found the midnight plan of the repo man to be a delightfully fun book. It's a little silly but I laughed a lot and it definitely made me happy. 6y
Abby2 Soul of an octopus 6y
Skylandar This series I found heart warming and at at times laugh out loud funny. The first two, which are actually books 1-4 are the lightest. The last compilation, which are books 5-6 start getting into the war years and are a bit less light hearted. 6y
Megabooks Anything by Elinor Lipman 6y
ohyeahthatgirl NK Jemisin reminded me that fiction can be hopeful with her latest. And it doesn't forgo serious matters like race and gender issues. 6y
Bookzombie While there I sadness in both of these, they also made me happy. 6y

Elizabeth2 Sarah Addison Allen is a favorite of mine - feel good, light but with some substance, and a little mystical thrown in. My favorite is tagged, but check out “The Girl Who Chased the Moon” too. 6y
bookishkai It‘s at times heavy, but I love love love it because it gets to the heart of so many things: faith, identity, love, creativity. 6y
Reecaspieces Books by Jill shavis...she is such a smart ass and has great characters 6y
BookNerd9906 Everyone I know on Litsy and in real life has loved 6y

[#TopTenTuesday] Books I DNFed Too Quickly! Whether it was that I didn‘t have enough time to finish it before it was due at the library, I wasn‘t feeling the book, or I didn‘t give the book a fair shot, these are the books I want to (or have already) give a second chance. 📖📚

http://heathersreadinghideaway.blogspot.com/2018/06/top-ten-tuesday-books-i-dnfe...

Erinsuereads I‘m glad I‘m not the only one who was wounded and fragile after Merlin 😂😂 6y
HeathersReadingHideaway @ErinSueG my heart 💔😭😂 it was too much. 6y
Erinsuereads Far too much! And then I had to watch it again with my husband! Never again!!! But I‘m totally going to cosplay Morgana someday 😂 6y
HeathersReadingHideaway @ErinSueG I would love to one day watch it again! Maybe after I‘m done rewatching charmed 😂😂 and oooh that would be awesome!! I have such a crush on Katie McGrath 6y
Erinsuereads Right??? Me too. She‘s gorgeous. I even almost like her more once she gets all witchy and ratty. 🤤🤤 6y

Here is a great inbetween read that all of you will for sure enjoy! It's a shortstory of incredible finese. Stick with it through the first couple of pages and you will be rewarded! Word magus Mark Z Danielewski at his best!

I am slowly updating my Goodreads TBR list to properly include the unread books I have on my Nook and Kindle apps. It is eye-opening. I have a lot of reading to do. I could read nothing this year and next but TBR books that are currently in my possession, and I still would not finish.

Nevertheless, she persisted. 🤓

1. I don't like the spine being broke it makes the pages fall out.
2. I LOVE coffee far more than tea.
3. The history nerd in me would LOVE this.
4. Helps me sleep.
5. As much as I would love to be an author, I love to see and hear people discovering new books and new authors.

So last month was the 1st time I made an official #TBR list. And because I'm slightly type A (just slightly 😉) I really stuck to it. So I'm working on creating one for this month, but I just don't feel like it!

Anyone want to help me choose my next read? I always have one physical book and one kobo read on the go. I'm reading The Star-Touched Queen on my kobo, but can't decide which of these should be my next physical book. Any thoughts? #indecisive

I'm focusing my efforts on the #birthdaychallenge this year. I'm hoping a smaller challenge gives me the incentive to read more books I own and tackle the longer books I tend to avoid. But I still set high Goodreads goals, and of course I wrote down all the categories of Book Riot and Popsugar's challenges too, just to see how far I get. Olive remains unimpressed.
#bookishresolutions #readjanuary

LauraKath That birthday challenge sounds like a great idea!! 8y
