7 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
In the winter of 1917, with many of his regular hands off fighting in World War I, George Bliss hires young Martha Lessen, a female horse whisperer, to help gentle wild horses, and as she demonstrates her unique talent for dealing with damaged horses, gentles a horse for a dying man's son, and clashes with an abusive hired hand, she finds a sense of family and belonging.

This book is for readers who enjoyed A Man Called Ove. It is the story of a young woman who is a horse whisperer before there was such a thing. The setting is Oregon at the outset of WWI. Beautifully written with a very compelling story. 4⭐️

Last week I read The Hearts of Horses by Molly Gloss. It takes place in Oregon so I thought it would be the perfect choice for our trip…and it was. Very engaging horse story! Read if you like Black Beauty.

If I could read 4 books this month, I would read:
💪🏻 The Mummy! by Jane Webb Loudon for my book club
🐴 tagged for a trip to Oregon
📚 The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson (finished yesterday), and Friends, Lovers, and the Big, Terrible, Thing by Matthew Perry for the Monthly Key Word GXO challenge

What should I read first?
#tbr #MarchTBR

Ruthiella I say read the first chapter of each and see which grabs you the most. Though my eyes gravitate to the chunkster! I would certainly pick that up first! 2y
PaperbackPirate I like your strategy @Ruthiella ! I started reading the chunkster since it‘s the only one with a deadline. 😂 2y

Sneaking in a little #litsypartyofone.

So far loving this book that I can only describe as a landscape western. Horses, a female protagonist who doesn't fit the mold... Ride 'em cowgirl!

Suet624 Oh, my daughter just handed this one over to me. Let me know what you think. 8y
valeriegeary @Suet624 Just finished it! Found it to be quite lovely. I would call it a quiet, but soul-filled book. About the land, about a courageous young woman living life on her own terms, about the community of people who come to be her family. Recommended. 8y
Suet624 @valeriegeary thanks so much for checking back in with me and letting me know. 💕 so glad to hear. I hope to stop grabbing library books and start reading from my own stack! This book will be put on the top of the stack. 8y
