Elegant and forceful I couldnt put it down. Catherine Lacey, author of Biography of X A pioneering, revelatory masterpiece of modern literature that conjures the life of 16-year-old girl living on the Argentine pampas now in English for the very first time With echoes of Edith Whartons Summer, this radical feminist novel broke the silence around abortion to reshape the way womens bodies and rights were perceived in 20th-century Argentina Perfect for readers of Tove Ditlevsen, Annie Ernauxs Happening, and Claudia Pieiros Elena Knows In the sweltering Argentine pampas, all things bow to Nefer. Reeds nod when she digs her heels into her horse, unripe peaches snap and fall as she gallops past. Sickly-sweet air bends, churns in Nefers throat. Nefer measures the distance between her body and the table, and feels something filling her up, turning against her. Her belly swells. Desperate, Nefer visits a local medicine woman who is known to perform abortions but Nefer becomes too afraid to explain why she is truly there. She attends confession at church but cannot confide in the priest. During a fierce argument with her mother, she finally blurts out her secret. A radical feminist text, January was the first Argentine novel to represent rape from the survivors perspective and to explore the life-threatening risks pregnancy posed, in a society where abortion was both outlawed and taboo. With a narcotic musicality and voice scorched through with honesty, Gallardo hangs before us an experience that has been lived and ignored a thousand times over. Nefer closes her eyes. We careen to her and we see.

My #bookspinbingo for the month of January. Let's go!! I started a Grim Reaper's Guide to Catching a Killer on audio yesterday and I have The Women ready to start today. #bookspin and #doublespin numbers are in the same diagonal line...Maybe a Bingo this month? ❤️📚

Giving this another shot! Fell off on everything last year but I‘m hoping the break did me some good and that I‘ll be able to keep up this year. Combo of library books, #roll100 titles, book club books and some “free” spaces where I get to choose a book I got for Christmas.

My first #bookspin list of 2025 is set. I‘ve decided to use the first 12 spaces for various reading challenges and next-in-series titles. Challenges/book clubs/buddy reads with set titles have the title listed. Ones that have multiple options in a given month are listed by challenge only so I have a bit of flexibility for mood reading. ☺️

Believe it or not, we are less than a week away from not just a new month, but an entirely brand new year!! Since all my efforts to stop time have been to no avail, I guess I have to accept the inevitable and start planning my 2025 #BookSpin list!! I am super excited to Spin along with all of you this year, even if creating this post does give me a mini-existential crisis every month 😂

As always, a reminder to make your lists work for you!! ⬇

TheAromaofBooks I love seeing the creativity of everyone‘s lists. Some people stick with specific titles, but many of you have switched to categories to help accommodate mood reading (and life!), and I have seen some super fun ideas. Things like: published in the 1990s; on the living room shelf; such-and-such challenge; red cover; mystery; library book; author‘s backlist; etc etc. There are no wrong answers for your list. Feel free to experiment ⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) and find a system that works for you. Personally, I have started a two-list approach. I create one list that lasts the whole year and is comprised of books that I call “hard” books (usually nonfiction) and that is my actual BookSpin book each month. My second list I make is my monthly TBR and that‘s my BookSpinBingo list – and that month‘s BookSpin book gets added to that list!! This is a loosey-goosey challenge ⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) whose primary goal is to get books off your TBR, whatever that looks like for you.

There is a giveaway associated with this challenge!! Every BookSpin and DoubleSpin book that you finish counts as an entry!! In January I will post a Google Form that you can fill out to track these entries, and that form will have more details on the “rules” of the giveaway. Right now, there is still time to enter the 2024 giveaway!! ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) This is my first time using the brand new 2025 tag list!! So if you do not get tagged today and wish to be added, please let me know!! If you get skipped, it‘s also possible that I just misspelled your username lol Anyone is welcome to join, and remember that you are also welcome to dip in and out of this challenge throughout the year. ⬇ 1mo
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) Thank you all again for joining me on this adventure and listening to all my rambling!! 😂 I spontaneously created this challenge on January 1, 2020, with no idea that it would still be going strong five years later!! I‘ve had so much fun Spinning with all of you and can‘t wait to see what we read this year!! 1mo
Yuki_Onna @TheAromaofBooks Thank YOU for creating and hosting #Bookspin and #Bookspinbingo and for all the work you put into this! It's my favourite reading challenge and adds so much fun to my reading year!❣️ 1mo

ImperfectCJ I always feel more pressure to make the first list of the year really great...but I don't ever really know what I mean by "great," which makes it a pretty slippery goal. Thanks again for hosting this awesome---dare I say great?---challenge! 1mo
claudiuo Still trying hard to finish a couple books, I'll probably again do my list the last day of the month as always; I will not say the last day of the year, because I am still in denial as to time flying by so fast: only a few days left in 2024? No way! 😲 1mo
Julies_Bookshelf_Adventures Ready to go this year!! Now that my life has calmed down a bit, I‘m hoping to have more reading time! 1mo

Overloaded infographic! My spreadsheet suggest my reading has been far too straight white British so far this year!
9 books read (if you include the 90 page novella) in January. My favourite was The Goodbye Cat, though The Queen of Poisons was a close second; the worst by far was Love, Lies and Lemon Cake.

Repost for @Andrew65

Believe it or not we are already rapidly approaching the mid month 9 day Pick Your Own Goals Readathon, #JoyousJanuary

Any one can join, just choose your own goals whatever they may be, and post your goals and / or the books you hope to read. All very flexible and very informal.

Please use the tag #JoyousJanuary and tag me in any posts.

Have fun with it, this is really the only rule.

Now that the #bookspin numbers are out, here‘s my tentative January TBR - a nice combination of library books, #bookspin, and #auldlangspine. ☺️

But also, note to self, stop putting books on the bookspin list that you don‘t really want to read. 🤦🏻‍♀️ At least it‘s the #doublespin choice.

TheAromaofBooks Looks great!! And remember... DNFs count, so maybe this is your chance to jettison a book that isn't really going to work for you 😂 13mo
robinb Been there, done that. LOL I still have a few that I‘m “iffy” about but feel better about it overall. 13mo
Itchyfeetreader @TheAromaofBooks I love that idea 13mo
TheAromaofBooks @Itchyfeetreader - One time, I had a BookSpinBingo participant purposefully make her entire list of books she owned but thought she had a better than 50% chance of DNFing - she didn't make it through the whole list, but she did get rid of like 15 books that month! 13mo
DGRachel @TheAromaofBooks I kind of love that! 13mo
