Trixie Belden | Julie Campbell

Hey #BobWhiteBuddies !!! Quick question - do we want to skip December and pick up in January with The Happy Valley Mystery, or are we good to read Happy Valley in December? I'm fine either way, but I know this time of year can get overwhelming, so just let me know what you think!!

⬇ ⬇

TheAromaofBooks Also, I have a tiny (like envelope-sized) present I would love to send to each of you because it's PERFECT 😂 I have everyone's addresses except Beth, Chelle, and Lora. If you could please email me your addresses at itsthegoodlife15 at gmail OR just let me know that you don't care to share your address which is 100% fine 😁

I'll be back next week to chat about The Black Jacket Mystery!!

lauraisntwilder Skipping sounds good to me, but I'll fit it in, if the rest of the group wants to keep going. 3d

BookmarkTavern I‘m good either way! It would be a nice short read for #WinterGames , but I‘m happy to do either. 3d
DebinHawaii I‘m fine either way—whatever the group wants to do. 3d
Read4life I don‘t know if I‘ll be home from caring for my father in law in time to read it (my copy is at home) so I‘d prefer to skip December but completely understand if the group wants to continue. 3d
curiouserandcurioser @TheAromaofBooks im good with what everyone decides:) 3d

A new kid in town means a new mystery for the Bob Whites! In addition to figuring out an ice carnival to raise donations, Trixie needs to find out just what is going on with tough city boy Dan.

A lower stakes mystery for the kids, but just as much heart. Love how the kids all take on an activist role for their friends, & seeing most of them jump to conclusions about Dan, then apologize when they‘re wrong is heartening.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! I'm looking forward to this one!! 1w

Book 7 in the Trixie Belden series is the first book not written by Julie Campbell. However, I felt like if I hadn't known that, I wouldn't necessarily have guessed it haha There were several things about this one that I liked, and a few things that kind of annoyed me. The entire premise of the school forcing the Bob-Whites to disband felt unrealistic (can the school control what you do at home??) ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (con'td) especially since the Hawks just got a “oh yeah you're cool“ with zero effort. It just seemed like they could have done this entire fundraiser without the weird school board potentially breaking up the club. Someone else who reviewed this book this week (I can't remember who, sorry haha) mentioned the outdated stereotypes of the Japanese men in the story. While this is definitely true, this book was published in 1961, a time when many ⬇ 3w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) people were still biased against the Japanese, despite them technically being our allies. So the fact that the author chose to present them as kind and helpful, instead of making them the villains of the piece, actually seemed like a solid move to me. We also get a little glimpse into the idea of the Japanese having a beautiful, rich, interesting heritage.

I was a little let down by how little the code actually figured into the story??⬇
3w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I also JUST read the Sherlock Holmes story that involved a similar code - do you think that's where the author got the idea?? I know St. Nicholas was a real magazine, but I couldn't find out if the code actually appeared in it at any point.

I actually really enjoyed a lot of the scenes of the club just being friends, plus the little spark of (very innocent) romance between Trixie and Jim. I shipped them soooo hard growing up! 😂 ⬇

Read4life Due to some unavoidable circumstances, I haven‘t finished yet. But I will. I love this buddy read. 3w
BookmarkTavern The beginnings of the romance were very sweet, and felt really age appropriate! You make an excellent point about the context of the inclusion of the Japanese men. And the code made me think of that Holmes story too! I looked up those ones and while the actual code is different, the dancing men are the same style! 3w
TheAromaofBooks Tagging everyone on this post again because I found a little something-something that I would LOVE to send to each of the #BobWhiteBuddies (very small, like in an envelope haha) If you all are willing to do so, could you email me your mailing addresses?? itsthegoodlife15 at gmail

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024

Read for #BobWhiteBuddies Book 7 in the series doesn‘t quite live up to my childhood hype of it. I remember it being a favorite because of the code found in the magazine (Saint Nicholas-a real children‘s magazine) & the little spark of Trixie/Jim romance (a corsage & a dance but be still my preteen heart) Unfortunately the racist caricature of the Japanese brothers doesn‘t age very well. It still gets a nostalgic ⬇️

DebinHawaii … but soft pick. I‘m also using it for the #HauntedShelf #BookScavengerHunt #FIgure prompt as in addition to Trixie, there‘s the figure of a very bad guy on the cover.

Read during the following readathons for Team #Flerken 👻 points:

TheAromaofBooks Yay!! I just started this one, but already I'm like... why does the school board give the Hawks a pass but the Bob-Whites (who are all model students and children of prominent citizens) have to work for it?? 😂 I also remember being intrigued by the code growing up, but now am like, this seems like a lot of work to write SOS 😆 1mo

#LitSolace #HyggeHourReadathon

My #HyggeHour tonight is pretty mellow. Starting Trixie for #BobWhiteBuddies & part of my #HauntedShelf TBR while watch/listening to Corpse Bride.

I‘m drinking hot tea with honey & still trying to get over this sinus thing I‘ve got going. Thankfully, no travel this week but a busy one & a midweek ESOP conference on Oahu, so probably early to bed after this. 🤧🥱😵😵‍💫😴

The BobWhites must prove the worth of their club, & Trixie has the brilliant idea to host an antiques show to raise money for UNICEF. Only, the show draws more nefarious eyes than just the school board.

I had forgotten about the racist caricatures of the 2 Japanese men in this story. Add the fact that the code is only a small part of the story, & Trixie‘s parents being so dismissive of her instincts means this one is low on my list.🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

BookmarkTavern Addendum: the $763.94 they raised for UNICEF would be equivalent to about $8,055.89 today, if we set the story in the publication year of 1961. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks I haven't started this one yet!! It's the first book not written by Julie Campbell, so it will be interesting to see how the characters/tone shift. Although it sounds like maybe in a bad way 😬 1mo
BookmarkTavern @TheAromaofBooks I‘m hoping this one is just growing pains into the series, because the characterization of the rest of the kids was good. Mart was less directly insulting, the kids all expressed kindness towards Mrs Vanderpoel and eventually Tad and Spider. 1mo
OutsmartYourShelf Never heard of this series. Well done 👏 1mo
