I especially loved all the quotes in this that hinted at the reasons behind Wangari‘s strength, determination and resilience.
I loved both the #auldlangspine books I read from @Chelsea.Poole ‘s list in January, and I‘ve started 2 more titles for February.
@monalyisha Thank you for organizing our lists and this giveaway! You did a killer job as usual! Please tell Moxie I‘d love a chance to win Lost and Found from your list.
I finished my first #AuldLangSpine book this morning. Thank you for choosing this one for me @Chelsea.Poole ! I‘d read children‘s books about her before, but the depth of her achievements, and of her indomitable spirit didn‘t really sink in until I read this more substantial account of her life. I‘m completely in awe, and she‘s a welcome addition to the list of women I admire and would like to emulate. @monalyisha
What a wonderful way to approach the world! …Is this what gives her the unspoiled optimism I‘ve been admiring so much despite having a life that would leave many people jaded? #AuldLangSpine
Starting my first #AuldLangSpine read of the year! Cedric is “helping” because apparently library books always smell more interesting. I also downloaded the audio of this one from Hoopla, so I‘m not sure if I‘ll end up reading or listening. @Chelsea.Poole @monalyisha
I‘ve joined a new “literary club” where I was assigned this memoir. Why didn‘t I know the change-maker Wangari Maathai before this?! Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her conservation efforts by founding the Green Belt Movement, feminist activism, and peaceful demonstrations leading to bringing democratic change in Kenya. Wangari was intelligent, inspiring, but so down to earth and I loved learning about her life in her own words.
Soccer was sooo sweaty tonight….I could barely concentrate to read. The soccer gods smiled upon me tonight otherwise though: both boys had practice in the same location, back to back ⚽️
Loving this memoir already!
An incredibly interesting read, Maathai is an exceptional person. This memoir takes you through her childhood, her first marriage, her creation of the Green Belt movement, into parliament and winning the Nobel Peace Prize. There is so much to discuss after reading, I have so many? about her marriage & it's end, her relentless optimism and forward thinking, she is an inspiration. This book does a great job laying out her life.
1. My parents had a name picked for me that was a combination of their first names but when I was born they said I didn‘t look like that name. They named me after my paternal great grandmother and my middle name comes from my maternal grandfather.
2. Thankful this week that I was able exercise my right to vote this year.

I‘m really bad at Not-Buying-Books. So bad that I bought the tagged book for the second time today. And I was so excited at it being only $3 that I put another one back on the shelf. :( But I‘ve been meaning to check out our local free little libraries anyways so this will go to one of those I guess.
“It is not possible to mention them all by name, but I would like to thank all of them collectively, so that if they come across themselves reflected in these pages they will know that their part in this journey is deeply appreciated.”
I just finished the book and really enjoyed it. Wangari is someone we all should know. She founded The Green Belt Movement in Kenya and won the Noble Peace Prize among various other awards. Her efforts have been replicated globally. One thing I like is that she is an example of a person that contributed so much without coming from wealth. She overcame so many obstacles. This is a great book to read in preparation for Earth Day. Highly recommend it
Wangari Maathai was a Nobel laureate for environmental activism & her push for democracy. She led the Green Belt Movement, focused on planting trees, envt'l conservation, & women's rights in Kenya & later as a pan-African movement. She led pro-democracy efforts against the Kenyan govt when it gave public land to its supporters & led a hunger strike when it planned to build a tower in Uhuru Park. 🙌🏿
