Magyk: Septimus Heap | Angie Sage
Enter the world of Septimus Heap, Wizard Apprentice. Magyk is his destiny. A powerful necromancer plans to seize control of all things Magykal. He has killed the Queen and locked up the Extraordinary Wizard. Now with Darke Magyk he will create a world filled with Darke creatures. But the Necromancer made one mistake. A vital detail he has overlooked means there is a boy who can stop him - the only problem is, the boy doesn't know it yet.For the Heap family, life as they know is about to change, and the most fantastically fast-paced adventure of confused identities, magyk and mayhem, begin.

This book has been on my to-read list since I was a child. There are some kids' books that are still fun to read as an adult. Unfortunately, this was not one of them. The world-building was weak and a lot of things didn't make sense (e.g. the basics of the gov't and how the bad guys got into power, why wizards could easily be subjugated by non-MAGYKAL people). The threats didn't seem real and characters didn't feel believable. Wouldn't recommend.

Finally gave this one a re-read! I read it first when I was a kid, forgot everything that happened in it, and loved it just as much this time around! If you‘re looking for a good middle-grade fantasy, this is one to look out for. Fills the #frostythesnowman prompt for #averymerrybingo @Jadams1776

If you like books that are filled to the brim with comedy, friendship and loveable characters, Magyk is for you. This is the first book in a series by Angie Sage. This story follows the Heap family; composed of Sarah and Silas Heap, 6 sons and one adopted daughter. Jenna, the daughter, was a baby found alone in the snow the night that Silas's seventh son was born. When Silas returned home with the baby girl, he was shocked to see the midwife rush-

Nicolas Galatonov out of his house, holding a baby and screaming, “It's dead!“ They decide to keep the baby girl in place of their dead seventh son. A while later, they find out that the Queen was murdered and Sarah suspects that the baby they found in the snow could be her daughter though she keeps it a secret between her and Silas only. With the Queen and ExtraOrdinary Wizard, Alther Mella, dead, the Surpreme Custodian(an evil man that works for DomDaniel) is put 3y
Nicolas Galatonov in charge of the castle. He has Magyk schools closed, gets rid of a lot of Magyk books and makes it known that the use of Magyk should be frowned upon. Alther's apprentice, Marcia Overstrand is then appointed as ExtraOrdinary wizard. Throughout the years, she keeps watch on the Heap family to see that Jenna is safe. 10 years after the assassination of the Queen and the night Jenna was found, Marcia discovers one of the Supreme Custodians spies 3y
Nicolas Galatonov living next door to the Heaps. The spy gets authorization to kill Jenna but Marcia is faster than her and brings Jenna to the Wizard Tower. Outside the doors to the Tower, Marcia discovers a boy from the Young Army(Supreme Custodians guards) frozen and nearly dead under a pile of snow so she brings him to her room with Jenna and warms him up. Silas, his dog, and youngest son, Nicko, come to see Marcia and Jenna. Marcia soon discovers the assassin 3y

Nicolas Galatonov entering the Wizard Tower so she makes everyone go down the garbage shute. They arrive at the bottom of the Tower near the moat and Sally's cafe. Sally is their friend so she lets them use her boat to escape. A Hunter comes and threatens Sally until one of her customers gives the Hunter the information he needs. He then gathers his pack and follows the runaways down the river. When the Hunter catches up, Marcia summons mist and then creates an 3y
Nicolas Galatonov illusion of their boat going farther down the river. The Hunter chases after the illusion while the Heaps, Marcia and Young Army boy(also named boy 412) escape into the marshes to Aunt Zelda's cottage. They stay there for a bit but boy 412 never says a word due to consorting with wizards being against the Young Army rules. One day he explores around and falls into a secret cave where he finds a ring that glows in the dark which allows him to find 3y
Nicolas Galatonov his way to a trapdoor leading to a small room in Aunt Zelda's cottage. Marcia decides to teach Jenna, Nicko and boy 412 a basic invisibility spell and realises that boy 412 is very gifted at Magyk. She then asks him to be her apprentice but he turns her down because he thinks the ring he found is the source behind his power. A message rat from Sarah then arrives and tells them that Sarah and the kids have gone to live with the witches in the 3y
Nicolas Galatonov forest but Simon, their eldest son, has disappeared. Silas decides to go see his family and look for Simon. Simon was captured and sort of locked up in the castle. He talks a lot with the Supreme Custodian and they become friends. A while later, a message rat arrives with a message from the Supreme Custodian pretending to be Silas and telling Marcia to come see him in the castle. She teleports there but is ambushed by his men. She is thrown into 3y
Nicolas Galatonov jail. The Hunter finds out where the kids are hiding and comes after them with DomDaniel's apprentice who isn't too good at Magyk, which is weird considering he is the seventh son of a seventh son. Once at Aunt Zelda's cottage, the Hunter chases Jenna and boy 412. Boy 412 sees the secret entrance to the cave he saw earlier and rushes in there with Jenna. He then leads her back to the cottage where Aunt Zelda has used a Freeze spell on the Hunter 3y
Nicolas Galatonov and has captured the apprentice. She wipes the Hunter's mind and sets him off to go the circus. The apprentice says his name is Septimus Heap but they don't believe him because Septimus Heap died when he was born 10 years ago. Later on, Septimus escapes and finds his way to DomDaniel's boat which is waiting outside the marshes. The kids follow him and Alther's ghost appears and tells them Marcia is kept prisoner on the boat but that they should 3y
Nicolas Galatonov stay put. The three kids use the invisibility spell Marcia taught them and sneak up to DomDaniel's boat. Boy 412 and Jenna board and find Marcia. Boy 412 gives her his ring hoping it helps them but on their way out, they are discovered by DomDaniel. They escape but DomDaniel starts summoning a terrible storm. They get to the cottage and Aunt Zelda hides them in the secret cave boy 412 discovered. Jenna accidentally makes the wall open up to reveal 3y
Nicolas Galatonov a room with a beautiful boat with the a dragon head in the front, dragon wings on the side and a dragon tail at the back. They find out that the dragon is alive and somehow part of the boat. The storm breaks down the walls around the underground room and reveals the sky. The dragon tells them to grab the tiller and steer her while she flies. Marcia escapes from the jail due to boy 412's ring helping regenerate her power and she goes up on deck to 3y
Nicolas Galatonov see the dragon boat flying over to her and DomDaniel's boat. The kids pick up Marcia while the storm causes DomDaniels' boat to sink. The Heaps join the kids and Marcia at the cottage. Aunt Zelda scries and they all discover that boy 412 is actually Septimus, Silas and Sarah's supposedly dead son. Later on, Aunt Zelda does some more scrying and discovers that DomDaniel hired the midwife to say Septimus was dead and deliver him to the Young Army 3y
Nicolas Galatonov nursery where one of his servants would pick him up and bring Septimus to him. He wanted Septimus because he is the seventh son of a seventh son meaning he will be really good at Magyk. When the servant comes to pick up Septimus, she snatches a baby from the midwife's hands not knowing that the baby was actually the midwife's baby and not Septimus. The main theme of this book is how teamwork and being part of a group help a lot when dealing with a 3y
Nicolas Galatonov problem. The theme is made present multiple times in this book. For the main characters to even have survived as long as they have, they needed each other. For example, Marcia saves Septimus from the snow, and she also creates the fog allowing them to escape into the marshes. Also, Septimus saves Jenna from the Hunter by leading her into the secret cave and the kids save Marcia from DomDaniels boat. In contrast, we see just how unsuccessful their 3y
Nicolas Galatonov enemies are because they try to work alone and never combine their powers. An example of this is when the Hunter comes to the cottage with the apprentice. The apprentice follows Nicko to the cottage where he is overpowered by Nicko and Zelda while the Hunter tries to follow Jenna and boy 412 which allows him once again be overpowered by Aunt Zelda and Nicko. I think this book was great and very detailed. I can really agree with the theme of the 3y
Nicolas Galatonov book because I've realised a while ago that doing things alone is a lot harder than doing things by yourself. If one person can do lot, imagine what 2, 3, or more people could do. 3y
MissYaremcio Nicely done Nic! I read the first book of this series but not any of the others, have you read any more of the series? 6/6 3y

I really, really wanted to like this book, but I just struggled to focus on it. It ended up feeling more like a chore than a joy. Maybe I‘ll come back to it and read it later, but right now, I just I‘m not excited about it.

🎧 I really enjoyed this book, I didn‘t think I would but I did. I bought the hardcover for my home library. Sort of Harry Potter on the run. It felt familiar as it uses some words that were used in HP. It‘s a kid book but so was HP. It‘s for about the same age range. It‘s worth a read. I‘m not comparing it to HP I‘m just saying that while reading Magyk you may occasionally be reminded of HP. Anyone else have a HP read-a-like? ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I wasn‘t sure what to expect with this story, but I was very pleasantly surprised! The tale was neatly interwoven, not overly complex, and overall lighthearted. There are ups and downs, thrills and laughs - I enjoyed it!

It was the beginning of a series, but you could easily read this and not have to continue (though I very well might).

rockpools Thank you for this! You‘ve made me think about changing my Fitbit step goals - I regularly fall about 2000 short, so I‘ve reduced them by 1000 - I‘m more likely to put the effort in to reach 1000 more steps than 2000, which would still be heading in the right direction🤞 5y
