3.5 ⭐ T. Kingfisher has become a master of retold fairytales. This book is loosely based on the Goose Girl tale. It‘s not a tale that I am completely familiar with, so this book was something completely new. While new it held all the classic components of a fairytale. You have the dark and evil entity, in this case of sorceress, who just wants someone with a lot of money that she can control. You have the ingenue, the young one

LibrarianRyan that is beholden to the evil character in some way. In this case, the daughter. Then you have your action. The Sorcerous plans to wed landed gentry for a better future. While this doesn‘t sound bad in theory, this sorcerer controls people. Her familiar, a white horse, is not really a horse and not nice. The brother and sister who the sorceress has marked as her next victim take her young girl as well. The sister knows that strange things are 5h
LibrarianRyan afoot because this woman is doom. The story progresses from there. I did enjoy the story, but it is not one of my favorites by Kingfisher. It was not predictable which I enjoyed, but it did have some drag.

My recent (unsupervised) (late night) eBay purchases finally arrived!

I recently discovered the Eight Days of Diana Wynne Jones podcast and the second episode covers Wilkins‘ Tooth & The Ogre Downstairs… I had Ogre on my bookshelf but Wilkins‘ Tooth proved harder to locate as there is no ebook and the library didn‘t have it (hence eBay) (and well, they referred to Reflections in the 1st ep. so I thought I might as well). Excited to get reading!

BookmarkTavern Oh nice! I‘ve really been enjoying the podcast! Thanks for posting about it! 7h
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @BookmarkTavern, turns out I haven‘t read as much DWJ as I thought 😂 especially the stuff from the 70s - and I decided to read before listening which makes for a fun post reading debrief! With any luck DWJ will end up my most read author of the year. So glad to hear you‘ve been enjoying it! now

The prequel is up next in this series. As I mentioned in another post, I saw people in forums discussing the reading order and a lot of people recommended reading the prequel either 3rd or 4th. Although, I‘m dying to know what happens in book 3 of the main story 😩

I could not put this one down. Book 2 in the series unraveled more of the mysteries that were merely hinted at in the first book. There was an unspeakable tragedy that had me in literal tears, and this caused a huge rift between some of the characters. Our MC was really unleashed in this one, so there was more action. I‘m dying to see what happens in book 3, but I have to wait to get it so I‘m onto the prequel for now.
