The Cauliflower
The Cauliflower: A Novel | Nicola Barker
13 posts | 4 read | 16 to read
Maddening, funny, playful and beautiful...Barker has once again invigorated an old form -- the historical biographical novel -- through electric wit and sheer bedazzlement. --The Washington Post To the world, he is Sri Ramakrishna--godly avatar, esteemed spiritual master, beloved guru. To Rani Rashmoni, she of low caste and large inheritance, he is the brahmin fated to defy tradition. But to Hriday, his nephew and longtime caretaker, he is just Uncle--maddening, bewildering Uncle, prone to entering trances at the most inconvenient of times, known to sneak out to the forest at midnight to perform dangerous acts of self-effacement, who must be vigilantly safeguarded not only against jealous enemies and devotees with ulterior motives, but also against that most treasured yet insidious of sulfur-rich vegetables: the cauliflower. Rather than puzzling the shards of history and legend together, Barker shatters the mirror again and rearranges the pieces. The result is a biographical novel viewed through a kaleidoscope. Dazzlingly inventive and brilliantly comic, irreverent and mischievous, The Cauliflower delivers us into the divine playfulness of a twenty-first-century literary master.

I haven't made up my mind yet, but so far this book is not going over well. I just read 10 pages about a bird flying around the temples of Kolkata. #readersunite

Took a personal day from work to rest and go to a doctor's appointment, but the day has turned into weirdness on account that I live in Linden, New Jersey. If anyone has been watching the news, just know that I've been jittery all day and I just want everyone to be safe. Book mail from @RebeccaH has helped. Thanks!!!

Gleefulreader Take care! 8y
Notafraidofwords @Gleefulreader thanks. The police here have been great, so I'm trying to stay calm. 8y

BookishFeminist I heard about that and I am so glad you're safe- stay inside and away from windows if you can, maybe draw yourself a relaxing bath. I hope the book brings you peace. How nuts! I'm glad I don't work down the street from this mess anymore. 😬 Especially Elizabeth since I used to go to that train station daily. Stay safe ❤️❤️ 8y
Notafraidofwords @RebeccaH thank you so much for sending it. 8y
Notafraidofwords @BookishFeminist thanks. Everything is relatively calm considering. Just lots of sirens. I think the police are doing a good job clearing things out and stuff. It's just still nerve wrecking. 8y
BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords I understand completely- it'd have me on edge. Very nerve wracking to have police go by so frequently. Glad they're doing a good job containing everything & glad the shooter is in custody. 8y
rachel_mbc So glad you're safe! We're near Boston and the days of the manhunt after the marathon bombing were crazy and unnerving. We don't even live near the neighborhood where they were found. I can't imagine how nerve wracking your day must have been! 8y
Notafraidofwords @rachel_mbc yeah and my niece was in school so I was double nervous. 8y

Mayread I feel like the only one here who outdoes your stack game is @Liberty 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @Skiles ☺️That may be the best compliment I've ever had! Thank you! I was thinking how today's feed, with the endless stacks just feels so right to me, so apt and familiar! I just kind of feel like I'm walking endlessly around my house. 8y
Gezemice Very nice stack! And yeah, you need an intervention in the form of shelves. :) 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @Gezemice The sad truth is that I have 4 bookcases thruout the house, all overflowing and I had a floor-to-ceiling wall of shelves custom built in my den and it's STILL like this. Addiction. The struggle is real! 8y

Pickpick

Kaleidoscopic romp around the life and mysticism of Sri Ramakrishna. A book full of childlike joy and games, just like its central character. Time has no limit. Unity with the divine makes no sense. Enjoy it and just be. Namaste

Pickpick

This story is like a cauliflower - told in sections and nodes. Each is a vignette in the life of Sri Ramakrishna, a historical and important spiritual figure born in 1836 India. In this way, the author plays with the idea of legend/fact/history/mythology/truth and how indistinct they really are.

RealLifeReading Oh I really like that cover! 8y

Mehso-so

I struggled with this one. I like the varied narrative voices and the exploration of faith and the divine. But the book felt a little aimless and didn't hold my attention well. It was missing something.
