The Emperor's Blades
The Emperor's Blades | Brian Staveley
In The Emperor's Blades by Brian Staveley, the emperor of Annur is dead, slain by enemies unknown. His daughter and two sons, scattered across the world, do what they must to stay alive and unmask the assassins. But each of them also has a life-path on which their father set them, destinies entangled with both ancient enemies and inscrutable gods.Kaden, the heir to the Unhewn Throne, has spent eight years sequestered in a remote mountain monastery, learning the enigmatic discipline of monks devoted to the Blank God. Their rituals hold the key to an ancient power he must master before it's too late. An ocean away, Valyn endures the brutal training of the Kettral, elite soldiers who fly into battle on gigantic black hawks. But before he can set out to save Kaden, Valyn must survive one horrific final test. At the heart of the empire, Minister Adare, elevated to her station by one of the emperor's final acts, is determined to prove herself to her people. But Adare also believes she knows who murdered her father, and she will stop at nothingand risk everythingto see that justice is meted out.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I really liked this book! After the murder of the emperor, this book follows his three children: one raised by monks, one by warriors, and one in their father‘s court. All raised to be his blades once he‘s gone.
Not very fast paced, but consistently intriguing, I can‘t wait to see what happens next!

“Rot. It was the rot, Tan‘is reflected as he stared down into his daughter‘s eyes, that had taken his child.”

So glad I gave this a go. I have never enjoyed a multiple prospective book, but then there is this. I love every prospective. There are more books in the series and I will be getting my hands on them.

Somewhere between Pick and So-So, but still a little more Pick, than So-So. It didn't blow me or anything, but it's a solid High Fantasy story with nice ideas. I'll read the second book, but won't stress about it. Then I'll see if I'll continue the series.

Done! The library will be getting all their books back and I won‘t need to put my name down for another reserve. Technically I didn‘t do 3 in 3 days but it was a voluntary withdrawal. I made it a quarter of the way into the tagged book but I was hating every minute of it. It was dark, gory and boring. I gave up and watched Parks and Rec to de-stress instead. I have too many exciting sounding books waiting for me to bother with a hate read.

4 🌟!
Such a great beginning for classic epic fantasy. This book focuses on 3 children of the Emperor, Kaden, the heir was sent to a monastery to learn about the Blank God. Valyn was sent to become Kettral, one of the deadliest soldier riding on a giant bird of prey. And Adare was taught to become the first female minister in his father's reign.
Mind blowing plot, can't wait to dive into 2nd book.

4.5 stars

This was so good! It definitely felt like the main purpose of the novel was for it to be a set up for future events but I really enjoyed the Kettral and I am excited to see where the story goes.

Bookstore dilemma: do I want all of the books, most of the books or just these five, one of which I may already own?

(Trick question, I want all of them but alas I guess I'll just get these five. Ursula K LeGuin books, you're next trip.)

The Emperor‘s Blades is an amazing adventure that takes you through three totally different viewpoints with the death of the emperor being the cause and effect that spins these character‘s lives out of control. The world-building is amazing and I loved that I was able to experience three completely different worlds that these characters find themselves in...See this review and more at www.thegenreminx.com #review #TheGenreMinxBookReviews #reading

Starting the new year by rereading a recent favorite so that I can be fresh to read the other two in the series (and get ready for the new book out in April)

Interesting entrance to a world I am now curious about. However, this book moves pretty slowly. Very little actually "happens" within the scope of this first part of the series, and I left feeling pretty unmoved.

This book suffers from the side characters being more interesting than the main ones, so far. Plus, the main plot is slow to begin. The whole book feels like rising tension.

BonusPumpkin This book appears to have Anakin Skywalker on the cover...? 😂 9y
