Capture the Sun: A Novel | Jessie Mihalik

I didn't get any books for Xmas/ my birthday but I did get a gift card and some money so #bookhaul time! 5 books and an agenda for the new year, very pleased with my haul. Everything I got was on sale too except Capture the Sun. That's probably the one I'll start as soon as I finish my current physical book.

Cadillac Desert: The American West and Its Disappearing Water | Marc Reisner

My sister took me to the new Barnes and Noble in Wicker Park in Chicago as part of my Christmas present. I got a couple of books from her and then finally broke my ban and bought some for myself. The nonfiction are from Barnes and Noble and the fiction are from another bookstore we hit up!

Being the time of year it is, I couldn't resist a book about that quintessential seasonal animal that sums up the spirit of good cheer & holiday companionship: the Christmas Squid🎄🦑🎄
Lancashire legend holds that the squid climbs up the outhouse drain with its packet of gifts, which it deposits with its tentacle through the coalhouse ⬇️

I remember many a childhood Christmas Eve listening out for the squelch-slither of Father Squidmas, followed by a crunching sound as he ate the crabs we'd left out for him 🦀 On Christmas morning, we knew he'd been when we found his beak-marks on the broken crab shells, & ink stains and fishy mucus on the wrapping paper. Funny, we never made the connection with dad's dark-stained fingers and the slime marks on mum's Christmas jumper 😄 1w

The Adventures and Misadventures of Maqroll | Edith Grossman, Alvaro Mutis

Another Christmas present, this book looks promising. Also published by NYRB Classics, who put out some really great works. Right up there with Dalkey, imo. Translated by Grossman, I had also recently purchased her translation of “Don Quixote,” which I plan on reading next year. 2025 is shaping up to be the year of the weighty tome, for which I am quite excited. #bookhaul #christmasbookhaul
