Skippy Dies
Skippy Dies: A Novel | Paul Murray
Why does Skippy, a fourteen-year-old boy at Dublin's venerable Seabrook College, end up dead on the floor of the local doughnut shop?Could it have something to do with his friend Ruprecht Van Doren, an overweight genius who is determined to open a portal into a parallel universe using ten-dimensional string theory?Could it involve Carl, the teenage drug dealer and borderline psychotic who is Skippy's rival in love?Or could "the Automator"the ruthless, smooth-talking headmaster intent on modernizing the schoolhave something to hide? Why Skippy dies and what happens next is the subject of this dazzling and uproarious novel, unraveling a mystery that links the boys of Seabrook College to their parents and teachers in ways nobody could have imagined. With a cast of characters that ranges from hip-hop-loving fourteen-year-old Eoin "MC Sexecutioner" Flynn to basketballplaying midget Philip Kilfether, packed with questions and answers on everything from Ritalin, to M-theory, to bungee jumping, to the hidden meaning of the poetry of Robert Frost, Skippy Dies is a heartfelt, hilarious portrait of the pain, joy, and occasional beauty of adolescence, and a tragic depiction of a world always happy to sacrifice its weakest members. As the twenty-first century enters its teenage years, this is a breathtaking novel from a young writer who will come to define his generation.

1. School starts the first Tuesday after Labour Day in Ontario (September 5th this year), so I'm working that day. This year for some reason it is a PD day in our district though, so kids don't start until September 6th.
2. I'm not a huge school setting fan in novels as I spend so much time in one, but I really did like Skippy Dies.

This book is TOO LONG and I am not enjoying some of the narration voices. Maybe I can no longer handle chunksters? I just want to be done with it. I don‘t think I am even half way 😧

Ruthiella I read this in print and didn‘t love it the way others did either. It‘s like “The Great Irish Novel” and the author packed it full of everything necessary to fulfill that. 4y
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - finished! ✔️ Finally. With abt 2.3 hours left, I almost reached out to you to tell me what happens 🤣 But I didn‘t want to foist such on you (I never remember book endings, myself.). So I kept going. Set in an Irish boys' school, this is a hilarious novel about adolescence and early-adulthood which also manages to be frequently poignant and thought-provoking. It manages to take in string theory and multiple-universe physics, as well as more mundane concerns such as eating disorders, bullying, sexting and porn addiction without ever getting po-faced. Simply superb.

I really enjoyed this story about the death of Skippy (no spoilers, since it's the title of the thing), a student at a boys' boarding school in Ireland, and how it affected everyone around him. The characters were really well drawn, which is how I stayed invested in this tome (661 pages!)- while the plot did drag on at times, I cared enough about all the characters, as highly flawed as they were, to see it through to the end. 4.5⭐

claffy_reads Read for the Irish Author category for #Booked2019 which finishes up Winter for me! Which is perfect, since I believe the last of our snow (knock on wood) will be melting away today! @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage 6y

Hard for a book to be simultaneously hysterically funny and deadly serious - this book was exactly that. The book is set in an Irish boarding school and follows a group of young boys, but the themes are very adult (including drug abuse and allusions to sexual abuse). I'll definitely be reading whatever else Murray puts out.

I loved this book about 14 year olds in a prestigious dublin school. The writer at points had me laughing out loud and he captured that age brilliantly contrasting it with the teachers sense of life having passed by in an instant. The fact that the title and opening chapter gives the rest of the book uncertainty as we grow to love skippy makes it more heartbreaking. A wonderful read with sun and a 🍻.

This book was on my #tbr list for years, and it did not disappoint! Eminently literary, this novel had a really dark humor to it. It is about childhood, adulthood, parenthood, and all the ways they go wrong. Moving, touching, and thought-provoking, if this book piques your interest, I definitely recommend you give it a try.

After Skippy dies, things get totally out of control at Dublin's College for Boys. While during his life he was a rather average, shy adolescent, his death has an enormous impact on his friends, his teachers, his girl and her dealer.
The Principal does all he can to keep the school's reputation spotless and he seems to get away with it, which is why the book, despite its light and often funny tone of voice, also is quite disturbing. #manbooker

I found this book at the library bookstore Tuesday. As I was checking out the cashier told me about her dog Skippy who passed away years ago, but was a wonderful dog.
