Just One Damned Thing After Another
Just One Damned Thing After Another | Jodi Taylor
History is just one damned thing after another - Arnold Toynbee A madcap new slant on history that seems to be everyone's cup of tea... Behind the seemingly innocuous faade of St Mary's, a different kind of historical research is taking place. They don't do 'time-travel' - they 'investigate major historical events in contemporary time'. Maintaining the appearance of harmless eccentrics is not always within their power - especially given their propensity for causing loud explosions when things get too quiet. Meet the disaster-magnets of St Mary's Institute of Historical Research as they ricochet around History. Their aim is to observe and document - to try and find the answers to many of History's unanswered questions...and not to die in the process. But one wrong move and History will fight back - to the death. And, as they soon discover - it's not just History they're fighting. Follow the catastrophe curve from eleventh-century London to World War I, and from the Cretaceous Period to the destruction of the Great Library at Alexandria. For wherever Historians go, chaos is sure to follow in their wake ...

3.75 ⭐. This was really about the characters. It had an engaging story line but I would have liked more depth.
I will read the nest in the series.

I originally abandoned this book a couple of years ago, but I was quite sick at that time and having a hard time reading. I figured it was me, so I gave it another shot. Got through 7 chapters and it's just not for me. I don't know enough about the characters to care about any of it. I'll read another Connie Willis book instead.

dabbe #hailthebail! Better books ahead. 🤩🤩🤩 7mo

When it‘s 4° in October, you shiver and moan. When it‘s 4° in April, you read on the deck while the dogs play tug-of-war.

(Okay, you shiver and moan a bit too, because it still ain‘t WARM but at least it‘s above freezing.)

I made a good start on this popular time travel romp, and it looks like it‘s gonna be fun! It‘s also, um, the first of my 16 2024 purchases I‘ve actually read. Gotta whittle the list down this month.

xicanti (A fair number of the 16 are books I read through the library and wanted to own, plus one switch from hardcover [ugh] to ebook [yay!]. My TBR‘s still a lot bigger than I want it to be.) 8mo

I finally on StoryGraph and set up a reading challenge for this series with books and short stories in order. @julesG If you‘re on StoryGraph, would you check my order? Here‘s the link:

https://app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/a8057722-17bf-42b5-8989-f48103d...

I‘m also tagging some Littens who‘ve given this book some love in case you want to track progress of the series:

@Staci.reads @trishb @deblovestoread @kristy_k @mollyanna

julesG Between My Name is Markham and And the Rest is History there's the very short short story "Dessicated Water" - before A Perfect Storm there's "Markham and the Anal Probing" another short short story 12mo
Deblovestoread Oooh! This makes me want to reread the series. Fun! 12mo
julesG Three more short short stories before The Ordeal of the Haunted Room: St Mary's and the Great Toilet Roll Crisis, The Girl With A Pearl In Her Nose, The Muse of History 12mo

julesG Just checked again, since you added numbers for the books. The Great St Mary's Day Out is a short story/novella, #7.5. The next full novel is And the Rest is History. 12mo
Texreader @julesG You‘re the best and I‘ve never heard of most of these stories! StoryGraph made me add the numbers and I couldn‘t do halves. 😟 12mo
julesG Don't worry about the numbers, I was just "wait, No 10 is playing in my car right now and that's Hope for the Best". Jodi reads some of the short stories herself on soundcloud.com. I can look up the link tomorrow. 12mo
Liz_M @Texreader You can add two #7s through. You'd have to pay around to see if there is a logic to which one is listed first. 12mo

Some years ago I listened to a lot of the Christmas short stories and I fell in love with them. So one Christmas I asked & Santa brought me the whole set. I‘m so happy to use #serieslove2023 to finally make progress. A number of books have come out since that big Christmas present. I‘ll work on filling in the gaps. I‘ll probably reread the short stories in order now, too. Here‘s the key to my list:

A group of historians, techies, security, and medics travel through time on behalf of St Mary‘s to ensure history has been accurately recorded. Unfortunately bad guys have also figured out how to disrupt the past and try to destroy St Mary‘s and the timeline as well. Rollicking fun and sadly dramatic as well. Here‘s a sampling of my many series only partially read, or that need a reread that are candidates for #serieslove2023. I‘d probably want to start with Jodi Taylor‘s books because they are so entertaining. Unfortunately book 1 is on loan to Mom so I‘ll have to nab it back for a quick reread. Ok @Doll8455 ?

Fellow Littens: Any other series you‘d vote for? Tbh, McMurtry and Follett are out because they‘re chunksters!!

GarethSouthwell I've had an eye on the Jodi Taylor. Is it good? 3y
julesG @GarethSouthwell If you like time travel and history, quirky British characters, sarcasm, Terry Pratchett, Ben Aaronovitch, Benedict Jacka, then this is for you. I bought the first book when JT self-published it back in the day and then had it lying around for ages. When I eventually picked it up, I was hooked, despite some repetitiveness. I've read all 12 books twice already. It's exactly my kind of jam. 😁 3y
GarethSouthwell @julesG 12 books! Twice! They must be enjoyable, then. I'll give one a go, as I like at least some of those things you mention. :) 3y
See All 15 Comments
julesG @GarethSouthwell I've gushed about the books on my blog. Here's my very enthusiastic post about the first book. https://scepticalreading.com/2021/07/armchair-time-travelling-with-st-marys/ mind you, the first book was self published and could have benefited from a little more editing. But, compared to a lot of other self published works, it's a gem. 3y
GarethSouthwell @julesG Nice review. (What about Welsh ancestry, I wonder...?) I shall add it - thank you. Self-publishing can be quite an expensive thing, so I understand when authors decide to skip professional editing. I'd gladly pay for it if I could afford it, but I have to make do with the help of friends and the kindness of strangers! 3y
julesG @GarethSouthwell Thank you! Welsh ancestry? I'm not following. Should you ever need someone else to beta-read your work, I love getting the red crayons out. 😂😂 Honestly, I'm good at spotting inconsistencies. And I have a black belt in checking grammar - English is not my mother tongue and so I keep looking up phrases and grammar that looks funny to my second language speaker's eyes. 3y
GarethSouthwell @julesG I meant about how to tell which British people have Norman or Saxon ancestry. Some may have neither - Welsh, Scottish, etc - though most people have a mixed background these days, of course. And that's a very kind offer - I'll honestly bear that in mind. It would be unpaid, I'm afraid! Though obviously you'd get a mention in the published book. Currently working on another short story and two novels, so there'll be opportunities! :) 3y
GarethSouthwell @julesG May I ask what your first language is? 3y
julesG @GarethSouthwell Ah! I have no idea about how to tell Welsh ancestry. But now I'm curious. That's probably a Google black hole though. - - - I'm fine with doing it for the glory. Just give me a shout. 3y
julesG @GarethSouthwell My first language is German. Grew up in a dialect rich area, which is probably why I have a keen ear for languages. I had to learn early that even German isn't always spoken the way you spell it. 😜 3y
GarethSouthwell @julesG I will shout! :) Generally, the Welsh people are descended from earlier settles who came from Northern Spain, so are shorter and have a darker complexion (as opposed to the fairer skinned Scandinavians, and later the French). 3y
GarethSouthwell @julesG All the Germans I've known seem to have better English than I do! :) 3y
GarethSouthwell @julesG By the way, Jules, if you did want to be contacted about beta reading, there's a newsletter on my website you can sign up to, which I use to put out calls for beta readers. You don't have to, just a thought in case I forget to ask you. 3y

3.25⭐ This book was a bit clunky and disjointed at times and probably could have done with another round of edits, but what it lacks in finesse, it makes up for with humor and excitement. It is a fun twist on the typical time traveling story, and Taylor's sharp dialogue and wit is enjoyable to read and highly quotable. I'll definitely be checking out more of The St. Mary's Chronicles.

julesG I agree. Re: editing, this book was originally a self-published book. When Taylor finally got a publisher, she already had a huge following. Guess editing/re-vamping this first novel just wouldn't have worked. 3y

About historians who time travel - but you didn‘t hear it and I never said it, or the consequences to us could be dire. They go only to observe and document (thus avoiding paradoxes - or History will take her own action) those points in history we all wonder about, like what happened to the Princes in the Tower. I‘m 1/3 of the way in; based on UK/ European history.
Don‘t miss the amusing cast list at the beginning.

The first in a series about the "tea-soaked disaster magnets" of St Mary's where historians investigate major events in "contemporary time" (the term time travel is frowned upon).
Headstrong but ingenious ancient historian Madeleine Maxwell joins the team at St Mary's and finds herself investigating all manner of events, including a stay in the Cretaceous that ends up going even more haywire than usual...

Definitely a pick. It could use some editing to smooth the transitions from one moment to another. It was choppy at times. Did anyone watch Loki on Disney +? I saw similarities in going back to points in time with major destruction and chaos so the time travelers could come and go without being noticed or impacting the timeline.

This was so much fun! I've read books 2+3 and the short stories yesterday.

GingerAntics Sure, why not?! 3y
Ericalambbrown I really love Max in this book. The book as a whole didn‘t light me up, but I really love her character. 💕 Enjoy! 3y

This book was so much fun to read!

This series is right up my alley and I can‘t wait to get the second one.

Time travel, dinosaurs, history, some crazy villains, bit of romance, what more could you want?!

Twainy I have this book! I knew it looked familiar. Adding it to TBR. 3y
