The Secret History of Moscow
The Secret History of Moscow | Ekaterina Sedia
9 posts | 14 read | 74 to read
Every city contains secret places. Moscow in the tumultuous 1990s is no different, its citizens seeking safety in a world below the streets - a dark, cavernous world of magic, weeping trees, and albino jackdaws, where exiled pagan deities and faery-tale creatures whisper strange tales to those who would listen. Galina is a young woman caught, like her contemporaries, in the seeming lawlessness of the new Russia. In the midst of this chaos, her sister Maria turns into a jackdaw and flies away - prompting Galina to join Yakov, a policeman investigating a rash of recent disappearances. Their search will take them to the underground realm of hidden truths and archetypes, to find themselves caught between reality and myth, past and present, honor and betrayal . . . the secret history of Moscow.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.

My reading experience was very disconnected, partly cause of the structure but mostly bc I had to put it aside for a bunch of library holds. Sorry, book. I enjoyed this but it does feel like an early work in places. I'd be interested in reading more by Sedia. I wish I'd read this when it came out as imo it has a similar vibe to some others I read a few years ago, like Amanda Downum's Dreams of Shreds and Tatters. 3 ⭐

llwheeler #readingwomenchallenge for book set in Russia/by a Russian, and #sfftbrchallenge for a book that I can't remember how long ago I got it 6y

What's a #readathon without cooking or baking something yummy?? Today I had a craving for rice pudding (and milk that needed to be used up) mmm.

Not quite finished the Poe collection but finished the stories and into the essays etc. So grabbed this one to break it up a bit. Haven't even hit 2 hrs yet though, so I won't be getting a very high time for the readathon.

BookishTrish How have I not read this?!? Stacked! 6y
llwheeler @BookishTrish It's been on my shelves for aaaages, finally getting to it. 6y

Hmmm....this one never quite came together for me. There was an always expanding cast of characters, lots of Russian history and folk tales galore. It never exhibited the intensity I was expecting. Interesting but not fantastic. I would guess there was all kinds of symbolism I just didn‘t get.

Like a Russian version of Neverwhere, but oh so much more. Loved it!

I finished this one late last night so I thought I would combine it with my monthly wrap up. I wanted to love this book, and I did like it, but it was very slow in places which I found odd for a relatively short book. It was for my #LRC #judgebycover - clockwork ravens, count me in! I completed the #mmdchallenge (fun track) this month!
