An intriguing Golden Age mystery. Layers of lies and deception. Each time a new clue dropped, I wanted to shake the characters and yell “figure this out!” Tense, atmospheric, and very entertaining! I enjoyed this #FurrowedMiddleBrowClub read.

Zorrie is a beautiful example of quiet kindness and continuing to move forward, despite tragedy, sadness, loneliness and disappointment. Written in lovely prose, this novel is reflective and thought-provoking. Meant to be savored - a quick read would not do it justice. A wonderful selection for #SundayBuddyRead, @TheBookHippie . Refreshing, original, uplifting, charming. A testament to the magic of confidence! Written in 2012, but takes place in the 1980‘s, and the references to the trends and technology was a fun throwback. There are only 8 species of bears alive in the world today. This interesting and thoughtful nonfiction book explores their history, the culture and mythology around them, and the way they interact with humans. The effects of government policies, public perception, and climate change are also explored, through scientific research and anecdotal evidence. Thought-provoking and very readable.

@mabell @Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks Looking forward to our next round of #HappyFiction 🙂 Here are some choices.

Are we starting in May, or taking a catch-up month? Snail mail or StoryGraph? 🤔

See All 31 Comments
TheAromaofBooks Woohoo!! Thanks for posting!!! I have also been thinking about this (even though I haven't yet read Willows or even checked SG to see if any of you have 😂). While there were things I did like about SG, I think overall I preferred sending the books in the mail. I'm down for another round either way. Thoughts? @Chrissyreadit @mabell 2w
TheAromaofBooks Also my personal vote is for The Smile of a Stranger because I have really wanted to read some of Aiken's other historical novels, but I haven't read any of these so I would be happy to try any!! 2w
Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks i agree i like sending better- i think i would like if we tried a little book journal, to jot down as we read or at end of book… also still have to read wind in the willows. 2w
Chrissyreadit I‘m good with Aiken! 2w
julieclair @Chrissyreadit I love the book journal idea! How exactly would that work? Would we write in that, instead of in the margins? And I assume it would travel with the book? @mabell @TheAromaofBooks 2w
mabell @julieclair @TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit Well friends, I‘ve been in a quandary - I am not able to keep up with our reading, but I also don‘t want to miss out on our lovely group. Realistically, I‘m afraid I just won‘t be able to join in. 😕 2w
Chrissyreadit @julieclair yes we would write in notebook instead of margins. 2w
Chrissyreadit @mabell I understand busy! is there something that would make it more manageable? 2w
mabell @Chrissyreadit Only not actually reading the book 🤣 2w
julieclair @mabell I totally get it. You are in a season right now where free time for reading is hard to come by. Our group has indeed been so special, and our friendships can continue, group or no group. I can imagine how hard it was for you to decide you needed to leave, and I know we all respect that decision, even if it makes us a bit sad. The end of an era, lol! 💙💝💙😘 @Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks 2w
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit I think we‘re all struggling a bit to keep up with the reading - witness the fact that none of us have started Wind in the Willows yet. (Although I definitely intend to read it, because it has been on my TBR forever.) Do we want to say a sweet goodbye to our group? Or continue it with just the three of us? 2w
Chrissyreadit I am happy to continue- or take a break- or discontinue- I enjoy a group of light reads, even though my brain is not reading the way it did a few years ago. But i also know it can be one more thing for some people. Like every other situation i‘m finding i read the books in chunks, and when i “get into” the book it‘s easy to finish but slow starts even for good books are sometimes challenging me these days (more than they used to) tWITW is on seria 2w
Chrissyreadit @julieclair @TheAromaofBooks i forgot to tag in above comment 🤪 2w
julieclair @Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks What if we were to continue, mailing the books and with a journal, but at a leisurely pace? For example, I would read the Aiken book, making notes in the journal. Whenever I finished it, I‘d mail it to Sarah. When she finished, she‘d mail it to Chrissy. When Chrissy finished, she‘d mail it back to me. Then I‘d choose a new book, and use the same journal. By using the same journal, we‘d get to see what those who⬇️ 2w
julieclair came after us wrote about the prior book. No monthly pressure, just read at our own pace, or DNF if we can‘t get into it. 2w
Chrissyreadit @julieclair i love that idea- and also ok with if we haven‘t started in the end of 4 weeks just mail or communicate? sometimes i do better with an end date- and sometimes having 6 weeks has helped. 2w
mabell @julieclair Yes! It was a difficult decision, and it had made me sad. Our group and our books kept me company through many appointments! ❤️ 2w
TheAromaofBooks @julieclair @Chrissyreadit - I love the idea of staying focused on one book, although maybe when the book gets back to Julie, she goes ahead and mails just the notebook to me and then I start with a new book, just so one person isn't in charge of providing all the books? haha we can work that out as we go along. I'm super flexible and love to see our group continue in some form. This would put us more at one book per quarter. No pressure @mabell 2w
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) but just curious if that is a pace that would be more sustainable for you? I totally understand if not - sometimes life has to take priority over reading (so annoying haha)

So basically, I'm up for whatever, but I do really like the notebook idea!!
2w
Chrissyreadit I think that sounds great! @TheAromaofBooks @julieclair 2w
mabell @TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit @julieclair I would love to stay in the group! Even if I don‘t get to the book, I could at least enjoy the journal comments 😂 2w
Chrissyreadit @mabell YAY!!!! @TheAromaofBooks 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 @julieclair 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 2w
TheAromaofBooks @mabell - Flipping through the journal could help you decide if the book is worth reading! 😂 2w
TheAromaofBooks @Chrissyreadit @julieclair @mabell - So Julie, are you good with finding a journal and picking the book to set us off on our new round of reading?? A heavy responsibility on your shoulders 😂 2w
julieclair Yay @mabell ! 😁🎉😄🎊🙌🎉🎉🎉🎉 And yes, @TheAromaofBooks , I‘m up to the task! 💪 I really love the journal idea, @Chrissyreadit ! ✍️📝 I think we have a great plan. We‘ll start with Aiken‘s The Smile of the Stranger. We‘ll mail in our usual order, Julie-Sarah-Elizabeth-Chrissy-Julie. Once the book & journal get back to me, I‘ll mail the journal to Sarah, and she can start our next round. Hooray for our happy little group! 🥰 2w

This was #24 in the China Bayles series, but the first one I‘ve read. The author did a good job of filling in pertinent past information, so I never felt lost. I enjoyed the mystery, and the bits-and-pieces way clues were revealed. I will read more of this series. Set in April in the beautiful Texas Hill Country, this was a last-minute substitution for #SeasonalCozies. Hoopla snatched my original choice back after I‘d only read 2 chapters! 🙃

Pickpick

Set primarily in 1940s France and 1960s Atlanta, this book is a testament to the strength of the human spirit to survive despite unimaginable circumstances and suffering. It realistically portrays the different ways survivors deal with the after effects of such suffering, and showcases how time, faith, determination, hard work, and love (both human and divine) can help the slow process of healing. Tough but worthwhile reading. Christian Fiction.

An uplifting story of group of women coming together to support each other through the dark days of World War II in war-torn Kent, England. Watching these typical, normal village women find their inner strength and grow in independence, while also caring for each other, is so inspiring. Most of the women are flawed, some are not likable, and many of them make mistakes, but they all persevere, doing the best they can in extraordinary times. ⬇️

julieclair A very realistic-feeling portrayal of life on the Home Front during the war.

post image

My choice for #BookedInTime this month is By Fire, By Water. I know very little about the #SpanishInquisition , so this should be an interesting read. @Cuilin

Cuilin I like the cover. This is a new to me era mostly too. 1mo
julieclair @Cuilin Just fyi, I have created a challenge on StoryGraph to track my #BookedInTime reading. It‘s not a public challenge (so won‘t show up in searches on SG), but I can share the link with other people. Do you think any of our other Booked-in-Timers might like to use that? 1mo
Cuilin @julieclair yes! Sounds fantastic!! 1mo
julieclair @Cuilin Great! Here‘s the link: https://app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/f6f6ac21-909a-4d7e-9e1c-2084aab... I‘ll create another post (maybe tomorrow) and tag everyone. 1mo
Cuilin @julieclair perfect!!! 😍 1mo

The very boring cover of my e-book cannot dim my excitement about re-reading Rebecca with the #HashtagBrigade this month! @BarkingMadRead

BarkingMadRead That‘s a bizarre cover! 1mo
julieclair @BarkingMadRead I know, right? Now I‘m going to be searching as I read for mentions of stripes! 😂🤪 1mo

julieclair @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Agreed. Mt book club decided to spread it over two months. So I‘m only reading the first half in April. 😅 1mo
