so-soI found the book overly long. Neo-Victorian novels are normally my jam, but was disappointed a bit. The 780 page brick of a book lacked forward momentum IMO. John Mellamphy aka Clothier aka Huffam goes from bad to worse and back to bad again while he and his mother are beset by nefarious forces who will stop at nothing to steal the boy‘s rightful inheritance.

I really enjoyed this. The complete saga of Sailor Ripley and Lula Pace Fortune, “the Romeo and Juliet of the South”. These stories are noir-ish and surreal, with unexpected happenings, and unforgettable cast of characters. Book 1, Wild At Heart, was adapted to film by David Lynch.
