I always enjoy EH's books, especially her earlier ones. The characters feel more authentic and the stories less formula. This one drew me in so completely I felt like I was in the bistro watching the story unfold.

janeycanuck I‘m making my way through her backlist, one book a month. Really looking forward to this one! 17h
TheBookgeekFrau @janeycanuck It has a little bit of a slow start, but before you know it you're deeply invested in this restaurant life. So good! 11h

A very slow 150 page start. I almost DNFed but I didn't feel like choosing another book to start 😂 Once it really got into the meat of the story it was actually interesting.

Finished this yesterday morning before our family hike/picnic.

This was one of the most honest, straight-forward, heart warming coming of age stories I ever read.

Not my favorite Conroy. The descriptions of Charleston were long-winded and boring; and quite frankly, annoying. But the story, oh man, what a story! It was compelling, ugly, thought provoking, gripping, and worth reading.

julieclair I‘m adding this to my stack, and will skim past the Charleston descriptions. 😉 2w
TheBookgeekFrau @julieclair That's exactly how to read it 😁 Outside of that it was so good! 2w

I really enjoyed this slice of life family story. Being close to the MC's age, there was quite a bit I could identify with.

A good, sink-into, partially estranged family story. I really liked the characters, the pacing, the writing. I will definitely be reading more this author.

History wise--interesting and enlightening; story wise--kind of boring.

bookandbedandtea I loved this book when I was a kid! I think I was 10 or so when I got it from a book fair and I know I read it multiple times throughout middle school. Child-me was very impressed by Karana. 2mo
TheBookgeekFrau @bookandbedandtea I was trying to decide if child me would have been impressed. I think yes that she befriended the dog, but that's about it 😂 2mo
bookandbedandtea @TheBookgeekFrau I think I was impressed that she could survive on her own. 10-13 year old me knew nothing about providing for herself. 😉 2mo
