Sometimes I really like my city even if I don‘t like what‘s going on here right now. After spending two full days down at the Senate to protest Kavanaugh‘s nomination to the Supreme Court, I came here to reflect and read at one of my favorite spots. The Supreme Court is to the left, the Library of Congress is to the right with Congress on the other side (out of the photo). This book is giving me a lot to chew on in our current climate.

Nothing like enjoying the great weather on my balcony with some work, a good book, and a cocktail. I‘m reading this for book club tomorrow night and it‘s really fascinating so far!🍹

This book came on my radar when it was the first horror novel to be nominated for Canada‘s Giller Prize, and I‘m so glad it did! This was a great read. Old photos are peppered throughout the text as the author writes what he imagines are their stories, all connected to Eastern Europe, Romani, and Russian folklore and a small town in Canada. Fantastic format, lots of creep & suspense factor, and great writing.

Y‘all I‘m stressed. Wedding planning has eaten me. I‘m taking the night off to enjoy this stack of books and a Moscow mule. First up, Girls Burn Brighter since we talk about it in @LitsyFeministBookClub next week! 🥃🥃🥃🥃

Richard Rothstein is at my library tonight! He wrote my favorite books last year. He chronicles the government‘s direct creation of housing segregation, tearing down integrated neighborhoods to build segregated public housing. It‘s more segregated now than in45 years. I focused on housing law in at law school & have witnessed much of this first hand—it‘s devastating. I wish everyone would read his book bc it affects all of our social issues...

Reminder that we‘re reading Girls Burn Brighter for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with @LitsyFeministBookClub!! We‘ll start discussing it on May 13.

This book takes place in India and America, following the stories of two girls who are driven apart by family strife but will do anything to reunite. We‘ve never read a book by a South Asian author for book club so we‘re looking forward to discussing this!

I am going to devour this book tonight.

After the news yesterday I binge watched the entire 5-part CNN docuseries on this case called Unmasking a Killer. Surreal that he is now caught.

I‘ve been having a hard time with novels and full length books this year so I‘m digging into some poetry. I‘m in love with the title of this collection and have always been fascinated by the history of Virginia State Colony.

Seeing Katherine Boo speak tonight about poverty and housing in Mumbai. I‘ve been a huge fan of her journalism and activism for a long time and I‘m so stoked to see her!!

I immediately checked out Tidbeck‘s recent novel Amatka when I finished this. Her writing is magical and mysterious, seamlessly weaving together Swedish folklore and the supernatural with everyday life. Each story in this collection is captivating and unique. Her storytelling & quirkiness reminds me of Samantha Hunt, Kelly Link, and Helen Oyeyemi, but different. Tidbeck translated it herself which really makes the stories shine. 🧚🏼‍♂️🌲

I‘ve been in more reading slumps than I can count in the past year or so. In another one and trying to kick it with some great poetry. I‘ve had my eye on this collection since it came out. #booksnbucks

These short stories are knocking my socks off. I randomly grabbed this from the library tonight not knowing what to expect, but these are such beautifully dark stories by a Swedish speculative fiction writer. 🌌

I loved this short little book. This is Pearl‘s coming of age story, a quirky albino girl living in a car with her mom in Florida. Pearl narrates with clipped language that is full of metaphor. It‘s an indictment of how America‘s gun culture is a danger to ourselves when it‘s meant to protect. It paints a stark portrait of homelessness & foster care while examining spiritual connections between people & the fleeting nature of relationships. 🔫🐊

Thanks to @Catapult @CatapultStory for mailing me this beautiful new hardcover of Michelle De Kretser‘s latest book! It‘s up for the Stella Prize this year. I can‘t wait to read it after loving her novella Springtime a couple years ago. It‘s out in the US on March 13. ☀️

Planning for the week at Starbucks and prepping for this week‘s discussion of I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter with @LitsyFeministBookClub. This book is so good! A daughter of Mexican immigrants tried to find her place in her family and fill her older sister‘s shoes after she unexpectedly passes away.

Blasting through this ARC! This is out Tuesday and it‘s such a great, easy read. I think it will become one of my go-to book recommendations for well-meaning white people who are looking for ways to talk about race with their friends and family. I‘m excited for Ijeoma, too. I‘ve been following her career & blog for a while and have always loved her work, approach, and insight. I‘ve learned a lot from her.

I hope 2018 got off to a great start for everyone. I spent today reflecting on 2017 and setting personal growth goals for the coming year. I also did a lot of relaxing and reading, including starting this great book. It‘s finally out in the US this week after it was shortlisted for last year‘s Man Booker!

Spending Christmas Eve reading this amazing feminist dystopia, cross stitching, and making cookies. 🎄

I‘ve not been around lately because I‘ve been very sick and dealing with some personal emergencies. It‘s been a rough year. But I‘m on the mend and reading again! I‘m hoping to be around more now, fingers crossed. 🤞🏼

I‘ve been reading these today for some healing and positivity. They‘re both excellent. Nasty Women has been the look at the election I needed, and Electric Arches is so uplifting.

Fall mood. Reading excellent Graywolf Press poetry outside in the gorgeous fall weather. Just picked this up from the library and can't wait to dig in. I've heard amazing things about it! 🍂🍂

Only a few pages into this book and I can already tell it's going to be excellent. All politics are "identity politics" and using that term to describe certain causes over others is dog whistling. ??

I have the latest (tiny) Toni Morrison book! 🤗 Hoping to knock this out in one sitting tonight.
