Night Shift | Stephen King

Pickpick

A mixed bag, as most short-story collections are, but definitely more hits than misses, and a few really memorable stories. A number of scenarios and themes reminded me of King's novels, and I wonder if he'd used these stories to try out ideas that he developed more fully later.

An exciting night of intrigue, murder & theft for Conan in a desert oasis town inhabited by cannibals & strange cults.

An opportunity for Howard to demonstrate some of his worst racism, with a seasoning of predatory sexism. Apologists say it's of its time: it's still 💩

My 4⭐ rating is based solely on the fantasy/adventure elements I read Howard for, & that while Conan is, famously, savage, he also isn't as thick as he's sometimes portrayed.

dabbe Wow! What a cover, too! 😱❣️😱 1d
Bookwomble @dabbe It's the 1935 magazine cover in which the story was originally published. The character shown is Zabibi, who is described as being mixed-race and brown skinned, but I guess an accurate depiction may not have sold as well to the target demographic (hence, also, White Jesus? 🤔). Anyway, that aside, the artwork for Weird Tales was frequently incredible. 1d
dabbe @Bookwomble Thanks for the info! The colors are so vivid and jarring at the same time, too! 🤩 24h

I always think this author is writing about herself when she does short stories. I kind of like it.

vlwelser Is he in the public garden somewhere? I don't always pay attention when I use that as a shortcut. 2d
Morr_Books @vlwelser I never saw it when I lived in Boston previously. It is on the corner of Boylston & Charles on the opposite side of Boylston from the Commons 1d
vlwelser I'll have to keep an eye out for him. When it's nicer out. Sometimes we cut diagonally through there to get from back bay to north station. Because why give $ to the mbta if it's nice out? 1d

"Litten" ?

Well, there's a word you don't often meet in the wild!

dabbe @BarbaraJean Well, there is that. 🤣 5d
Bookwomble @dabbe We are! But, as @BarbaraJean said, it's not really a place you'd want to be! 😈 4d
bibliothecarivs According to dictionary.com, 'litten' is an archaic word for 'lighted'. 4d
Bookwomble @bibliothecarivs Yea, I knew the word, but it's not often you come across it. However, Clark Ashton Smith's vocabulary had a high archaic quotient, and practically every sentence contains some recondite usage. Readers either love or hate that: I'm Team 😍 4d

Just back from a preview screening of this! So good. Very much not the film you expect it to be.
I‘m pretty sure I read the book in my pre-teens. My parents would let me watch and read anything I wanted. Guess that‘s why I turned out to be heathen vegan pinko

LoverOfLearning A heathen vegan pinko! Ha I lol'd at that! Good for you. I've not read the book. Maybe one day! 5d
Luke-XVX @LoverOfLearning I‘d like to reread it, I‘m sure to pick up on things I missed as a kiddo 4d

I have been revisiting this book at different stages of my life. At every stage I‘ve related to different characters based on my situation at the time. The morsels of Bengali reference throughout the book kept me hooked as well.
Jhumpa Lahiri‘s characters; most of them have a streak of melancholy in them. Many of the characters walk the morally ambiguous grey path, you end up wondering who to rally behind throughout all the stories.

Ruthiella I need to re-read this collection. I normally am not drawn to short stories but I loved this and 6d

Only read 3 stories and had to stop. Boring, ending made no sense and didn't want to read any more.

This afternoon I introduced my grandson to the dot game 🥰 & read Willoughby's Crossroads by Joana Starnes from this anthology for #JaneAustenThenAndNow
Ending just after he meets the Dashwood ladies it offers some possibilities about his experiences & state of mind in the months prior to S&S. It was good. I'm eager to read the other stories but I'll wait to read each story until I reread the original each one goes with. @Crinoline_Laphroaig

Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm looking forward to all the stories in this one. 6d
