Librarybelle Today is a spring clean day, in between coaxing Zeke to eat. He‘s going through a rough patch this weekend and of course decided to be very picky on eating when the vet is closed for the weekend. I‘m hoping to carve some reading time in later today and all day tomorrow. We‘ll see! 23h

Librarybelle Overall, some good reflections. I liked the stories in each section that helped solidify the message for that section. I was not as enchanted with the book as I had hoped I would be, but I‘m so glad I read it! 2mo

Cuilin I love starting my day with this book. I love the Major Oak tree in Sherwood Forest and I also love the road of trees in Northern Ireland. 2mo

Faranae 😂 I think I'm the only one who doesn't like the book. I thought I would, but it doesn't go deep enough at all, and some of the trees I already knew about, I got annoyed because of how she talked about them (for example, focusing on the death of Kiidk'yaas instead of its part in Haida life, the saplings created from cuttings, the use of the wood in Six String Nation, etc).

It did give me something to track daily for Storygraph though! 2mo

dabbe I'm loving it and even got Matt reading it with me. 🤩 The only parts that sadden me, though, are the trees that no longer exist. 🥺 2mo

TEArificbooks I‘m loving it. I thought it was going to highlight a tree species a day but I like the specific trees. I thought the 11 bonsai trees was a cute story. 2mo

Daisey I‘m thoroughly enjoying this book as well! I don‘t tend to read it every day but about every 3 days I read a few days. I‘m not sure it‘s quite what I was expecting, but it‘s fascinating. 2mo

Seabreeze_Reader I'm enjoying the daily essays, although I sometimes miss a few days and then read multiple entries to catch up. I think the reading is just the right length and if I'm curious about finding out more info, I can do more research on my on. The stories of destruction do make me sad. How could someone manage to run over a lone tree in the middle of the Sahara dessert? It just boggles my mind. So far, I still like the Emancipation Oak entry the best. 2mo

Cuilin What I find interesting about Woolf‘s writing is that I really enjoy it while I‘m reading and two days later I forgotten the majority of what I‘ve read. I remember birds flying over a town. Oh and a group of women asking if men are worth the praise bestowed on them? 2mo

TheBookHippie I prefer her short stories and stream of consciousness over her long ones. I read a few twice to soak them in. I printed out Monday or Tuesday for my collage journal. 2mo

Bookwormjillk I enjoyed this book a lot. I‘m not sure I found it hopeful. More like there is promise of hope if we do the right thing. I thought the audiobook was very well done. You could hear the emotions in the author‘s voice. 2mo

Roary47 I really enjoyed the book also. I show a video to my classes every year called The Plastic Ocean and it has the same tone, and much of the same information. It is nice to see the change that happens to my students after they realize how much just plastic is causing on aquatic ecosystems. I think a change for the better is the aim by the tone they have. I also listened to the audio which was really nicely done @Bookwormjillk 2mo

TheBookHippie @Bookwormjillk I felt this way too. I love the ocean so much and I fear for it. The book is very well written and I think it‘s a must read. Done very well. I had a library book and I had to wait for it so that‘s encouraging. 2mo

Collapse Feminism: The Online Battle for Feminism's Future | Alice Cappelle

I'm really getting a lot out of reading my sociopolitical books from my #Roll100 list. It's making me feel better about the whole global situation atm, be that climate change, equality, AI, human rights, economics, or governance. There are people fighting back, educating, informing, documenting, and pushing for change. Some can be difficult reads but empowering for that. I highly recommend it.

Librarybelle Nearly one week down…how many more to go??? On Monday, I started meditating again and really hope to make this a part of my daily life—I do well, and then something happens, and I stop. My irregular viewing of my non-Litsy social media platforms is going well, which means more reading time! Overall, though, I‘m trying to focus on the present and live in the moment. I‘m a pessimist by nature, and current events make me doubt a bright future. ⬇️ 2mo

Librarybelle ⬆️ My favorite band, Our Lady Peace, released a song in 2005 titled “Will the Future Blame Us,” and it‘s been going nonstop in my head all week. That and R.E.M.‘s “It‘s the End of the World As We Know It…” except I don‘t feel fine. On a positive note, I‘ve got fun plans for Sunday and hopefully a good afternoon of reading today. Plus, the first discussion of #ChristiesCapers ! 2mo

TheLudicReader Busy week of marking and chasing kids for missing assignments as semester one wraps up. Had several discussions regarding AI, too. 😖 I have quite a lot of marking to do today to be ready for submitting my marks on Monday, but I am going to make time for a visit to the bookstore and to do some reading. Also made the decision to leave FB. I am on Bluesky if anyone else is. Come find me. 2mo

Bookwormjillk Happy #chatterday The best thing I can say for this week is it went quickly. I start PT on Wednesday for my hand issues so while I know it will be torture I‘m hoping for progress plus torture. @Librarybelle I started meditation again this week too! 2mo

Chrissyreadit @Librarybelle I have felt disheartened but i think my love of history has helped a ton to know that this is an ugly cycle and there are plenty of reasons it has happened- but it is not permanent because nothing is. One of my big thoughts is there is a huge fear of how social media has been used for misinformation- but it‘s also feared because it spreads information. We will continue to read and share and i have hope ❤️ 2mo

Eggs @AllDebooks Thx for asking - really challenging right now. Getting the house sale-ready, packing, crying, anxiety about apartment living, up and down stairs hundred X/day, visiting/consoling my partner in assisted living-so tired 🥱 2mo

Cuilin I got a steroid shot so for four days I had zero discomfort and got so much done. Working on some long term solutions with my doctor. Went to see David Grey with my daughters last night in Boston which was amazing. For a moment we could pause the anxiety of the times. @TheLudicReader Also got rid of TIKTOK, all Meta and I‘m on Bluesky. (edited) 2mo

Librarybelle @Cuilin I use the Calm app. In 2020, they had a lifetime membership at a deep discount, so I splurged and bought all of the content. I did see this post from Mindful.org on free app options for meditation: https://www.mindful.org/free-mindfulness-apps-worthy-of-your-attention/ I‘ve not tried any of these, but Mindful is a good resource for meditation practices. 2mo

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I strained a muscle on the right side of my back, so during a week when I really need to release frustration through exercise, I'm limited to gentle stretches. It seems to be in the mend, though. Work was busy. It was so cold that I wore two pairs of pants. I covered for a sick colleague. BUT the weekend is here, and I'm hoping for some time to clean up a bit, to read, and enjoy the company of my guy and our dog. @Eggs Sending a hug your way. 💛 2mo

Sace I doomscrolled more than I should have this week but still way less than I have in the past. Thanks to snow days I had a lot of reading time which kept my mind of things. Kerrbearlib This week I made mental health a priority. I learned emotional regulation skills & spent less time online. I‘ve been inspired by this Maggie Smith quote: “It‘s not enough to “think positive‘; you have to ‘do positive‘…Do something today, however small, to light up your own life. Or shine on someone else.” It‘s a dark time in the world & I think it‘s so important to bring light whenever possible. ♥️♥️♥️

CatLass007 Today is #Caturday! Every day is #Caturday! The cats are the only reason I get out of bed some days. And they take very good care of me when I don‘t feel well like Thursday and Friday because I had migraines all day. Not fun, except for kitty snuggles. Today I feel much better. This book about coffee that you have tagged is making me very sad because I love coffee, but coffee doesn‘t love me anymore. I am still able to drink tea, (cont)⬇️ 2mo

CatLass007 even caffeinated tea, so it‘s not all bad. My physical health goal is to manage my pain levels, starting with migraines. My feeling is that once my migraines are no longer keeping me in bed most days. I will be able to leave the house for something other than doctor‘s appointments. I used to attend a fiber arts group and an open craft group at our senior citizen center but the instructor is now in a nursing home and those groups no longer (cont)⬇️ 2mo

I have spent a lot of time googling and have found a fiber arts group that meets every other Friday at the public library, and a group called Makerspace that meets on Monday, Wednesday, Friday afternoons at another location. I also am looking at local book clubs and have found at least one that seems to be one in which I could participate. Maybe more. CatLass007 go anywhere. I am working at ways to be more frugal, because I spend every month agonizing over every penny I spend. Mental health also is a major priority. I am looking for mentally healthy and effective ways to resist fascism in the United States. @Librarybelle @Cuilin @Sace I have tried Calm and didn‘t find it particularly helpful. I find guided meditation a frustrating experience mostly it‘s about breathing and noticing your body (cont)⬇️ (edited) 2mo

I have attended a meditation group that mostly focuses on breath work, but on two different occasions, we were led on more focused, guided meditation. Mentally walking across a field, through a forest,up a hill, etc. Those seem to work better for me. But that particular group no longer (cont)⬇️ 2mo

Here's a silly game I play when I want my brain to shut off: I take the alphabet and think of a category; then I try to come up with answers for each letter. Example: For “names of authors“ I might think “Alcott, Louisa“ or “Ann Patchett“ (both ways, of course). Then for B, maybe “Browning, Robert“ and so on. It really helps shut off my worries. 🩵🩶🩵 2mo

CatLass007 When I worked at HBO in Manhattan, I was able to look out the window in the cafeteria at the National Debt Clock across the street. It was kind of depressing watching the numbers keep climbing. Eventually, National Debt stopped climbing so steeply and the billionaire who put it up had it taken down. The National Debt is skyrocketing again and his Foundation put it back up. But even as slowly as the Trump countdown clock is going, it makes me happy 2mo

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm just finally having my morning coffee. We are heading to Easton, PA today to have a belated holiday with my guy's cousin and her two sons (19 & 16). The father passed about 2 years ago and they all had similar interests. We like to spend time with the boys talking about superheroes and Legos. @TheBookHippie I am not looking forward to this week. Faranae I'm super sleep-deprived, but also excited because I finally have a fridge in my basement suite, so I can maybe start eating better. Anyone got healthy snack ideas? Nothing crunchy and it's winter here in the far North so produce will cost an arm and a leg. But baking is an option! 😻 2mo

It feels like we're reading an unrealistic sci-fi book...

My mom and I went grocery shopping yesterday. We stocked up a bit in case there's some kind of chaos and we're forced to shelter in place...that sounds ridiculous...this just all feels unsettling.

Keep praying for our wild in the forests, waters, and sky.

Anyone have any tips on sorting an eczema flareup? The only plus side is I get to do bandage wraps and look like a Scooby Doo villan. The best bit is chasing the kids (teens) round the house for a hug, shouting ,'But I'm your Mummy.'

Smrloomis Sorry to hear about the eczema. Our household has used Cerave and Eucerin creams; both worked well if you can get them easily where you are! 2mo

Lesliereadsalot Have had eczema my entire life. Can you get a tube of Mometasone Furoate Cream, .1% from your doctor? This stuff is amazing, clears up itching and rash immediately. And it lasts forever, have had this same tube for years! (edited) 2mo

AnnCrystal My brother had eczema, our mom applied medicine during the daytime and loosely wrapped cotton crepe bandage (allow fresh air time). For nighttime, she had my brother wear loosely fitted socks or mittens so he could not scratch.

I have plaque psoriasis, there was Burt's Bees Baby 100% Natural ointment that worked wonders, but these days I use Alba Botanica herbal healing. It takes longer 2 work, yet not oily messy, therefore more practical.

willaful Having a bad one too. Nothing seems to help anymore. 😭 Just getting a new prescription for something called Pimecromilus but my pharmacy is out of stock. 2mo

Birdsong28 Loratadine tablets. It's the base and ingredient in the fancy tablets such as Benadryl which stops the itching and you can pick up six months supply for cheap on Amazon. It always helps me 📚📖 2mo

dabbe Oh, I feel your pain! I've had it in my ears for over 30 years now. Nothing seems to work anymore--even the steroid ointment prescribed by the dermatologist. Thanks for sharing--because I see some new remedies posted here that I'm going to give a try! Hope one of these works for you, too! 🩶🖤🩶 2mo

quietlycuriouskate Have you tried Aveeno Dermexa (you can find it in Boots and Tesco's). The balm, especially, has been a godsend for flare-ups. I use the ordinary Aveeno for maintenance: my GP recommended this years ago when she was concerned about the long-term use of hydrocortisone cream and the like. 2mo

Cuilin Only prescribed meds that have horrible side effects. But for light relief on top of meds La Roche-Posay Double Repair moisturizer. It may not fix it, but it makes it feel good for a bit. 2mo

Larkken When I get patches in the winter i spot treat with the day crème from no 7 - oddly it seems to work v well. Its also seemed to help to over hydrate and to use the Dickinsons witch hazel cleansing cloths. But maybe all my little things wouldn‘t help on a large scale? Sorry you have to deal with it 2mo

Obviously, with age comes wisdom, as I have now tripled my reading time and discovered some amazing productions. Andy Serkis narrating The Hobbit was perfection.
