Soscha Maybe dog adoption. I think I‘d said we lost the last 3 of our very senior puppies the last 4 months. Dogless presently. So maybe we adopt. My partner is very hesitant about this. He only wants ONE. I told him two, need two to keep each other entertained particularly when they‘re younger. So maybe he adopts a 7 mo. old terrier today. On the Eve, maybe the maltie I particularly like—but the shelter has a 12yr old chi. So old man chi has seniority. 3h

Soscha IF it were my Xmas & birthday choice, we can bring home the Maltese & the little old man together on Xmas Eve. I don‘t believe prayer works but if you do please pray for us. 🙏🏻 3h

TheBookHippie One holiday party done Thursday night here and it was lovely. Daughter is finally through reaction to anesthesia - took over 72 hours 😝🫣😵‍💫. Tomorrow I have visitation with my parents at my brother‘s Christmas family party.😵‍💫 praying to the gods that they just don‘t speak to me and or I don‘t hear them. But then it‘s a whole other year til I have to do it again. (I see my brother regularly). Today is just coffee, rest, books. 2h

Cuilin Quiet day, H and I are planning a Yule walk in the woods. Mostly this weekend I will be audiobooking while knitting, baking or wrapping gifts. 1h

I'm currently participating in the final #hashtagbrigade #buddyread of the year. 10ish chapters left, and I just don't care anymore. I've never read a book with more loose ends, dead ends, and 'we won't talk about that' plot devices in my life. Thank goodness for @BarkingMadRead keeping us sane and the humour flowing. Otherwise, I would have bailed around chapter 10!

The Fox Wife: A Novel | Yangsze Choo

This has been a standout read of the year. I absolutely loved everything about it. The narrative is told alternately between Snow, the fox wife, and Bao, the private investigator looking for her. The setting is China at the end of Empress Cixi's reign, as modernity and Western culture start to infiltrate China.

It's heavily interlaced with Chinese, Japanese, and Korean folklore.
Highly recommended 5⭐️

Read4life I hope everyone is doing well. Since we won‘t be able to get home for Christmas with everything going on with my FIL (he‘s now in hospice care), we flew my daughter down for her winter break. I‘m so excited she‘s here. 1w

Cuilin What a week! My daughter R, had a fire in her apartment and had to move out. It was contained quickly and no one was hurt. They‘re hopping between our house and her boyfriend‘s dad house. TheAromaofBooks Busy here. We are thinking of selling our house and a realtor is coming to look at it tomorrow, so we have been doing a lot of little clean up, touch up stuff. We've lived here for ten years and completely renovated every aspect of this house, so it kind of feels like we are going up for a final exam to find out how much it's worth 😂 6d

It was electrical because the landlord plugged the fridge into an extension cord!!! It could have been a worse situation. 6d

Chrissyreadit Obviously i‘m a day late… but really love when i can see what everyone is up to. i love these posts Deb! I‘m trying to clean and hang some greenery today. Recovering from another injury and being grateful it is healing. Trying to get excited and not overwhelmed- I decided to host a cookie exchange and Yule event next Saturday. I will probably buy my cookies- because I cannot bake these days…. and also will not eat cookies 🤣🤣🤣🤣 but miss 6d

Just finished a week vacation in a nearby town which I think was relaxing? Helped my mom decorate this weekend. I‘m looking forward to joining a local LGBTQIA+ craft group this week and hoping it‘ll help me feel less stressed too. (edited) 6d

There are a lot of littens who i think will empathize if you want to grieve out loud and share pictures and stories of them. @TheBookHippie has a running chat on christmas day for anyone who is alone on the holidays or needs a break. I know most days i‘m held together with duct tape and bakery string so am here any time for support and hope. 6d

TheBookHippie My Daughter had a hysterectomy on Friday due to severe endometriosis - she‘s 35 and she has horrific reactions to anesthesia and we are still in that phase along with immense pain. She will not take strong pain meds as I‘m allergic to most and they don‘t agree with her either and she already reacts to anesthesia so… 800 mg Motrin it is. 6d

TheBookHippie @AllDebooks yes. It‘s young, however with the new president coming in and her unmarried status the doctor was afraid so we got it done. Since the birth of my grandson a copper IUD was helpful but not perfect, with it being likely made illegal it was too great a risk. It‘s a miracle she had my grandson, who will be 11 in February. Her case was very severe. I‘m hoping she‘s free of pain now. 6d

I like the Calm Contemplation sections throughout this book.
⭐️ I have fond memories of Nativity plays when my children were younger.
⭐️ I am an atheist, so faith plays no part in my Christmas or indeed life. However, the Story of Faith, carols, candles, and choirs all make me feel very nostalgic and Christmassy.

DogMomIrene Fellow atheist who hasn‘t really celebrated Christmas in years. Husband wanted a cozy Xmas this year and the five stories have really helped me. My memories of Xmas are tied to the story of faith, for sure, but what we build is up to us. 2w

jen_the_scribe I‘m currently reading this one as well and going through the calm contemplations. My husband grew up in a very religious household so faith is important to him, although he‘s less inclined to go to church these days. I‘m someone who believes in God but is distrustful of organized religion entirely. I think because we both have some sort of faith and agree church isn‘t for us, the story of faith is one that we see more eye-to-eye on. 2w

TheBookHippie I choose a different country every year and we learn about it and do the foods and gifts associated with it. Of course we celebrate Hanukkah and this year it‘s Chrismukkah! I‘ve picked this book up 5 times and can‘t do it. Hopefully today I can read it. 🫣 2w

dabbe I am totally about the nostalgia of Christmas as it was my mom's favorite holiday. She was named “Carol“ because she was born on 12/28 and my grandma's only girl. I'm also an atheist, but I heartily believe in being part of the universe. I feel more about the winter solstice these days than about a manger in Bethlehem, but I can still get weepy watching THE LITTLE DRUMMER BOY. Go figure. 🎄 2w

My choice for #MWS #FridayNightShare is a traditional reread of Charles Dickens Christmas Stories every December.
I also chose Eowyn Ivey's wonderful The Snow Child. It is set in the wilds of 1920s, Alaska. It revolves around a childless couple, Mabel and Jack. They build a snow child that comes to life, changing their lives.
It's a magical retelling of a Russian folktale, Snegurochka or The Snow Maiden. ❄️💙❄️

I used to despise winter and the long dark nights. 5 years ago, I became very ill with brittle asthma, triggered by cold temperatures. I now have to spend most of the winter indoors to avoid flareups. Coming to terms with chronic, debilitating illness has been a task.
However, once I changed my mindset to focus on what I could do rather than couldn't, things began to improve.

TEArificbooks My sister has that asthma and she lives near Canada border. She hibernates too and as spent much of the time indoors learning to cook too. I have a chronic disability as well. And it affects everything I can do. Mind set is everything to get me through the bad days. I love winter it is becoming my favorite season over Autumn. Staying inside, making soups, playing board games and doing puzzles, reading, sweat pants. 2w

This is such a beautiful book. Mabey is a prosaic nature writer who extols the complexities of the botanical world and its impact on our art, history, literature, medicine, and science.
My favourite chapters were The Cult of Celebrity, Growing Together and particularly Chiaroscoro.

So, #LitSolace is a tag I created to use as a connection with other Littens, using nature, mindfulness, Hygge, and the seasons using the wheel of the year.
It started with #MidwinterSolace in 2022 to help us through the winter nights in the runup to Midwinter Solstice. This extended to 2 months last year.
