Stranger Things Happen
Stranger Things Happen | Kelly Link
This first collection by award-winning author Kelly Link takes fairy tales and cautionary tales, dictators and extraterrestrials, amnesiacs and honeymooners, revenants and readers alike, on a voyage into new, strange, and wonderful territory. The girl detective must go to the underworld to solve the case of the tap-dancing bank robbers. A librarian falls in love with a girl whose father collects artificial noses. A dead man posts letters home to his estranged wife. Two women named Louise begin a series of consecutive love affairs with a string of cellists. A newly married couple become participants in an apocalyptic beauty pageant. Sexy blond aliens invade New York City. A young girl learns how to make herself disappear. These eleven extraordinary stories are quirky, spooky, and smart. They all have happy endings. Every story contains a secret prize. Each story was written especially for you.

So, I'm reading a Kelly Link anthology with the story 'Most of my Friends are 2/3 Water', and when I Googled it, this AI summary popped up...🤔

Graywacke Funny. I was just reading about the awkward potential of chatgpt logic and how it predicts patterns, resulting in it making things up have no basis in reality, but match the predictive patterns. Anyway, it‘s a weird technology and that‘s a weird answer. 🙂 1mo
Billypar @Graywacke Very strange, right? I did feed it several other story titles from the same collection, and it did better on those, identifying the story mostly, or in one case asking for more information, which isn't bad either. But it's still odd for this one case since Google's regular algorithm pegs it as Kelly Link's story in the top results returned. 1mo
Graywacke @Billypar very powerful and very strange. 1mo

“Claire‘s eyes are grey, like a cat‘s fur, he says, but Samantha‘s are gray, like the ocean when it has been raining.”
The Specialist‘s Hat is one of my favorite #shortstories not just because it is gorgeously creepy and weird, but also because it acknowledges the obvious (to me) truth that grey and gray are not just variant spellings of the same word, but two entirely different colors. #riotgrams

@mrozzz tagged me to do this a week ago, but time is a flat circle or something. Better late than never, right? 😉
At first I was paralyzed by the possibilities, but then I just thought about the books I've recommended lately, and here ya go!

This chicken stew c/o Giada was waiting for us when I got home from work 😊 meanwhile, Stranger Things Happen is as dark and lively as the 19 Crimes Banished in my glass. Good meal and good book for today's preview of autumn.

Recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/chicken-stew-recipe-19147... (modifications: added 15oz can of peas, garlic, pepper flakes, and 1/4c wine, cooked 8h on low in crock pot.)

I read Links Get in Trouble and was moved by it on so many levels ... then I forgot about her for awhile. Stranger Things Happen turned up and I'm excited to read it. Will be intrigued to note difference in writing, if any, as this collection is from 15 years ago.

Meowser fell asleep while we were reading. She was up late chasing a mouse that got into our apartment. Eek.

DebinHawaii Earning her keep! 🐱❤️ 8y
brilliantglow We had a mouse get into our apartment once. We've had more little brown bats get in than anything else. 8y

readordierachel @brilliantglow Yikes! Thankfully it was a little grey mouse. Rats would freak me out! 8y
brilliantglow Rats would be awful. Thank God we've never seen any of those. 8y
readordierachel @DebinHawaii She definitely earned her nap :) 8y
readordierachel @brilliantglow Oops, I meant to say "bats" would freak me out. Rats would make me burn the place down. 8y
brilliantglow Lol I'd probably burn the place down for rats too. Bats aren't so bad they just fly in circles until they find the way back out. And these little brown ones are only a couple inches long. Not like fruit bats or something which are much bigger 8y

Continuing to read Children of the New World & now I've moved on to Chipotle & starting Stranger Things. I'm hooked & only on episode 2. I know I'm going to have major withdrawal when it's over. 😭😭😭

Does anyone have any book recommendations to read that will scratch this itch?! It reminds me of what happens if the X-Files, Twin Peaks, ET, and Carrie had a creepy 80s baby. 😱😬

Librariana If you haven't read it already, maybe 8y
Librariana Also: absolutely ADORED Stranger Things!! So phenomenal! 😍 8y
BookishFeminist @librariana I have & loved it! Might do a reread on audio though. 😭😭 I'm nervous I've run the gambit on most creepy horror things people will recommend! Also yes, this show is amazing. 8y

Eyelit My best friends exorcism is the only thing that I've read lately that comes close - 80's nostalgia mixed with creepiness 8y
BookishFeminist @Eyelit Oh good I have that on my October TBR!! Out from the library right now! 8y
OSChamberlain That show is glorious. And the director made the kids watch all those 80s movies and shows to prepare for the role! 8y
BookishFeminist @OSChamberlain YESSS YOU HAVE TO RAISE THEM RIGHT 8y
Christy2318 Book Riot did a couple of lists for people who like Stranger Things recently. One was YA. 8y
OSChamberlain I will most certainly raise my own children as 80s and 90s children. 8y
BookishFeminist @Christy2318 I've seen it! Most are on my TBR already 😭 #bookwormproblems #creepproblems 8y
Librariana Ok! Final rec/suggestion because I'm obsessed with this series: 8y
BookishFeminist @OSChamberlain lol have fun with that. I will attempt it but it may not work 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @librariana Score! It's on my TBR but haven't read it yet. I will move it up for when I need my stranger things fix 👍🏼👍🏼 thank you!! 8y
Librariana Yay!! 😄 Enjoy when you get to it! ❤ these girls!! 8y
LeahBergen The husband and I were just talking this evening about making this our next binge viewing. I'm sure we'll like it! 👍🏼 8y
Tcip Seriously read 14 if you want to scratch the mystery sci fi itch. 8y
Shortstack You should read some old Christopher Pike or R.L. Stein books. That will itch the scratch! 😂😂😂 8y
Texreader This show felt like a mix of ET and Stand By Me. Glad you like it! My daughter and I binge watched it. 8y
Bambolina_81 @BookishFeminist I'm on episode 5 and was thinking the same thing. It's such a step back in time I'm loving it. @Shortstack I loved Christopher Pike and all the Point Horror books in the 80s and 90s 👻 8y
emily_jkn Paper girls! It's set in 1988 and is about 4 girls riding around on bikes dealing with some scary stuff not of this world. 8y
erinreads Everything about this picture makes me jealous: Chipotle (even though it's 6 in the morning) and watching Stranger Things for the first time. 💕💕 8y
mauveandrosysky The only recommendation I can think of that's even remotely close is 8y
AGirlAndHerBooks So much awesomeness happening here in this picture... 8y
meagankc21 I watched it in 3 days. Would've been 2 if i didn't have to go to work lol 8y
Sraexx Omg omg omg. I wish I were you, starting all over. I finished it months ago and still think of it almost constantly. 8y
TheNextBook Are you seriously just now getting to Stranger Things?! I'm anxiously waiting Season 2! 8y
becausetrains @TheNextBook if you read the Southern Reach trilogy, we'll watch Stranger Things S2 😝😝😝 (jk, we will watch anyway 😄) 8y
TheNextBook @becausetrains You got me! I'm going to read it! I promise. 8y
BookishFeminist @LeahBergen Omg you're going to get ADDICTED. 😱 8y
BookishFeminist @Tcip Thanks for the rec! I haven't heard of that one before but it's on my list now. 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack I might just do that! That's not a bad idea! 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @Texreader I agree! I wish we could binge watch it more than we can! It's about 2 episodes a night for us. 8y
BookishFeminist @Bambolina_81 We just finished episode 4. What the heck?!?! 8y
BookishFeminist @emily_jkn It's on my list. Thank you! 8y
BookishFeminist @erinreads I am always hungry for Chipotle so I understand that completely. I am loving the show!! 8y
BookishFeminist @mauveandrosysky Oh that's a good one! I need to get back to that. I might this fall. 😀 8y
BookishFeminist @AGirlAndHerBooks @meagankc21 @Sraexx I am loving this show!!! Darn work getting in the way of everything. Wish I'd started it this weekend so I could have binge watched it! 8y
BookishFeminist @TheNextBook 😂😂 We are seriously just getting to it! We don't get much time for tv!! 8y
Shortstack @TheNextBook OMG! You need to read the Southern Reach Trilogy!! 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack Right?! @TheNextBook the peer pressure is real!! 8y
Tcip @BookishFeminist duuuuuudeeee you are going to dig it so hard. 8y
BookishFeminist @Tcip I can't wait, it looks amazing & right up my alley!! 8y
Tcip Best part is there is a semi sequel. I'm trying to hold off reading it because I loved 14 so much that I want to take my time with The Fold but...... I'm not sure I will. 8y
Crystalblu The Girl With All The Gifts was recommended to me and I loved it! 8y
Bambolina_81 @BookishFeminist I binge watched the rest of it yesterday...LOVED IT! Winona Ryder is fab. I need to read these books now because I'm in withdrawal 😂 8y
BookishFeminist @Crystalblu Oh that's a good call! I've been meaning to read that one too. I hear the audio is good! 8y
BookishFeminist @Tcip Oh awesome! Don't hold back- it's the season for creepy stuff!! 8y
BookishFeminist @Bambolina_81 😭😭 I wish I could binge watch it!! I'm stuck at 2 episodes a night with my partner's work schedule since we're watching it together. At least you have a reading list now! 8y
TheNextBook @Shortstack @BookishFeminist @becausetrains Yes! I'm feeling the peer pressure but its for me to read! 😂😂😂 8y
Crystalblu @BookishFeminist I bet! Can't wait for the movie! 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @BookishFeminist , since reading this post I have gone from never hearing about this show to binge watching it in 3 days.....oh so good!!! Thank you!! I'm stuck recuperating from a fractured hip (never, ever fracture a hip...go to gym, listen audiobooks and build muscle!) and this show totally took my mind off everything!! So thanks again!!! I'm so happy I caught this post!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 8y
BookishFeminist @JanuarieTimewalker13 💙💙💙 I'm sorry to hear about your hip! but glad this was able to bring comfort!! I'm glad you caught this post too! I need completely immersive things when I'm recovering from things too. Hope the rest of your recovery goes smoothly. 😘 I wish I could binge watch it but can't bc of my partner's work schedule, so I'm not quite done yet. But it's keeping my mind off stuff too since I haven't been able to read much lately 💙 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @BookishFeminist Hope you get to watch it soon ! I need to check when season 2 is coming out in 2017. Was this based on a book? It doesn't say it is, just that it's created by brothers (forgot their name). 8y
BookishFeminist @JanuarieTimewalker13 I don't think it's based on a book but there are similar books I think! 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @BookishFeminist ok, thanks!! I commented on another of your posts, but I'm not sure if I used @bookishfeminist, you mentioned anxiety and I was wondering if you have tried taking magnesium, bc I just saw a YouTube about that. I'm pretty sure they said it helps anxiety. It helps a lot. 8y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I meant to finish that sentence:it helps a lot of things. 8y

Kelly Link is my favorite modern short story writer. She's carrying the torch previously held by Ray Bradbury for wonderful, strange tales.

Jenna: "I like reading about alternate realities and the extreme absurdities of life. The world is changing. As a journalist and writer I get to examine how it's changing every day which makes it less scary to think about. It's also extraordinary to be looking at the world as your job."

Curley_Bender Kelly Link is rad! Still have her latest collection to look forward to, which was just announced as a Pulitzer finalist. 9y
Richard And Jenna is rad too. That's a fabulous reader/readee combo. 9y
