The Origin of Others
The Origin of Others | Toni Morrison
27 posts | 28 read | 80 to read
What is race and why does it matter? Why does the presence of Others make us so afraid? America's foremost novelist reflects on themes that preoccupy her work and dominate politics: race, fear, borders, mass movement of peoples, desire for belonging. Ta-Nehisi Coates provides a foreword to Toni Morrison's most personal work of nonfiction to date.

Anything Toni Morrison has written leaves me in awe. This was the first non-fiction of hers that I've read and I encourage you to pick it up because it is very slim and accessible. I would read it as a work of literary criticism though, she moves through Flannery O'Conner, Faulker, and her own work, among others to explore how the "other" has been narrated and constructed throughout space and time.
Coates' foreword is also brilliant.

A quick and awesome read not just on race, but “othering” in general.

Toni Morrison is as brilliant as ever. This is a brilliant collection of essays that serves as masterful literary criticism, a fresh look at history and current events, interesting personal stories and anecdotes, and a fascinating look into her own novels.

Day 13: Food for thought.

From Ta-Nehisi Coates' foreword: "This is a work about the creation of aliens and the erection of fences, one that employs literary criticism, history, and memoir in an attempt to understand how and why we have to associate those fences with pigment." #readsoullit #tonimorrison #foodforthought

This is a fascinating book by Ms Toni Morrison! It‘s gives the reason why race matters from 6 different perspectives and literary examples to support them. I love a book that gives me even more books to read! 😁

This is a really quick read (it‘s a lecture that was presented at the humanities center at Harvard) that synthesizes some of Morrison‘s thoughts on the nature of othering, using examples from her own work. I imagine it would be a nice complement if you‘re reading or recently read any of her novels.

Honestly Toni Morrison could write her drink order on a napkin and I would love it.

Sace I'm really hoping my library eventually gets this one. 7y

Rowdy and I agree - this book of essays was great! Another very short but deep read on why and how we “other” people.

None of us are worthy of Toni Morrison. And Ta-Nehisi Coates' forward was pretty good too. 👑🖤

This is a really short book based on a lecture, but it‘s extremely powerful. Toni Morrison has such a special way about her and the way she writes. I just absolutely love her. She‘s one of those writers who recognizes the pain people experience, but never strips those people of their integrity. I think that‘s so special and important.

MariettaSG So true, the integrity part. 7y
Notafraidofwords @MariettaSG she‘s just spectacular. 7y

Library run-was successful at only allowing these to come home. Crazy two days: hot water tank burst; neither my husband or I home,so 6 in of water before hubby turned water off. Water drained, fans etc going. Old house (this part 1850)with most basement dirt floor & red stone foundation thats permeable- job of keeping curious cats away from basement door/ajar due to electrical cords-new tank Monday.

Reggie Yuck!!!!! So sorry. 7y
Dragon What a difficult situation to come home to. Hope everything dries quickly and you get back to normal.🤞 7y
ValerieAndBooks How crazy! Hope it all dries out quickly. 7y
minkyb So sorry. You sound so composed! 7y
kspenmoll @Dragon @Reggie @ValerieAndBooks @minkyb Thanks for the support! Its comforting to know you are thinking of us. ❤️ I sound composed because it seems as if insurance is covering the flooding & we have a great local oil company who has helped us through it & are putting in the hw heater for us hopefully Monday. We figured out a way to close door just a crack despite cords so cats have free reign. Kitchen jail did make happy😿 (edited) 7y

Separating the "us" from the "other" has been used to strengthen the "us" in order to have a common enemy. It's a strategy to peg groups of people against each other. Morrison's reviews this concept of othering with examples in literary works of her own and of other authors. This collection of essays is very current in the light of the political climate in the USA, but also on a grander scale due to globalization and the refugee crisis in Europe.

I read this in one day. Contained in it's 111 pages is so much that cannot possibly be absorbed in one read through. From the introduction through to the end of the 6th lecture, there is so much that we still need to learn, that I still need to learn. To deconstruct the "Other", we must know her and face her and realize that she is us. "Race is the classification of a species, and we are the human race, period." I highly recommend this book.

Redwritinghood Wow! Sounds intense and really interesting. Stacked. 7y
