Jackson is one of my favorite authors for when I don't want to work for my reading but I still want a story that's very well-done. She's also one of the on my novelists who should read their own work. She does a great job! #audiobook

This book got very mixed reviews, but I loved it. It's a very personal memoir and not necessarily a deep dive into the culture, but I learned some things and definitely appreciated her perspective. #audiobook #nonfiction

I loooved almost all of this collection of dystopian stories about a near future that's easy to imagine from where we are. I didn't actually know what this was about but grabbed the audio at almost random.

This book is doing so well commercially right now! She really isn't afraid to dig deep into her life and talk about her struggles and mistakes. I recommend the audio on this one. Hearing her narration brings the book to life since it's written in her natural speak g style. #audiobook #nonfiction #readingblackout

I like wine but I'm not a hardcore wino. This book and its peek into the inside of the sommelier industry is fascinating! I also learned a lot about wine types along the way. There are interesting "characters", there's humor, there's some pretty sentiments, and there's a ton of information. Great narration on the audio too. I gave it five stars. #audiobooks #nonfiction

I am LOVING this. Such exacting prose. The main character is a judge, and the scenes of courtroom proceedings are so detailed and feel so real. Otherwise the plot is simple but the emotions are so palpable. I've only read one other book by McEwan but I have a feeling this won't be my last. #unreadshelfproject2018

Sweettartlaura He‘s fantastic. Sorely under-rated/unknown here in the States, for sure. I have yet to be disappointed with him, & I‘ve read close to a dozen. 7y

It's a laying on the couch with an electric blanket and a book kind of evening. Tomorrow we're supposed to get freezing rain, so I'm trying to figure out how to tell my farther away dogwalking clients that i'd rather not crash my car so that their dog can have an extra, not really necessary, potty break.

I really liked this initially but I have eight hours left on the audio and I'm finding it slow going. I'm much more interested in the Avery sections than the children sections. I wonder if this is just because j don't like kids much. Books about children or siblings of any age rarely are loves for me. Do you have categories like that?

BookNAround I need to pick this one up as it‘s the pick for the new book club by me. 7y

This was cute and fun. I loved the peek inside librarianship and added a few books to my TBR. It definitely seemed like the publisher told Annie she needed more content and it resulted in several different types of book within one.

I listen to/read a lot of these psychology-type books, but this one is exceptional! It's really well researched and full of super fascinating facts. Warning: A fair amount of the content comes from research based on racist Google searches or on porn website searches. Definitely don't listen with your grandma or your kids. #audiobooks

The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir | Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich
post image

Other than celeb-type memoirs, I'm rarely fond of authors reading their own work. I pretty much immediately return any novel read by the author because I always hate their voice and pacing. But Marzano-Lesnevich? I would listen to her read anything! She somehow manages to sound peppy and interesting while telling a story that's morose and full of legal details, and the book is fascinating!

The language is beautiful, but also.. holy description. If you cut one purely descriptive sentence from each paragraph, you could shave 50+ pages off this book. Turtle is an interesting character but not an entirely believable one, and the narrative pacing here feels more like several smaller stories strung together. Overall I liked this and think the author has real promise, but not to the degree of the hype.

My favorite thing about this was how the narrator has a perfect voice for every person, from elderly African American former butlers to Nancy Reagan and Bill Clinton. The book itself is good too! I hadnt heard of this book until I was looking at past Bernstein award winners/nominees. This is basically a more journalistic Full Body Burden, about cancer in an area where a chemical company operated and dumped hazardous wastes. Despite being over 500 pages/17 hours on a dry subject, it's pretty interesting!

I fangirl out on really nerdy, technical animal behavior stuff, so Tricia McConnell isn't unusual pleasure reading for me. She's a great writer and storyteller, and her newest book is about traumas in her own life and the struggles of her dog, Willy. It's not as fluffy and feel good as many dog books, but if you're interested in behavior it's definitely accessible to the average reader. I listened to it in a day!

Shrill is a raw, uncompromising take on the ways women, particularly fat women, are just trying to live in a world that hates them.
