I only ever seem to get Tim Hortons during Roll Up the Rim. I used to win free food pretty consistently, but they switched to digital-only during the pandemic and I don‘t want to clutter up my life with another app, so I guess I‘ll never win again. Goodbye, all hope of a free car!

I came very close to the end of THE BONE MOTHER while I drank. It‘s packed with highly readable, unsettling stories with a lot to say about monstrousness.

Another Canada Reads title came in for me, and I couldn‘t resist the Blind Date With A Book display when I popped in to pick it up. I ended up with the tagged novel, which sounds right up my alley despite its low Litsy rating. (There are more positive reviews than so-so ones, so I guess a lot of people rated it but didn‘t post about it? I dunno how else that‘d work.)

The premise was good, but the presentation... not so much. I was down for the folklore but I felt like it was hidden too much. Even in the tales the creatures were telling, I almost forgot that they were the monsters. Near the end I was burning out and just not caring. I was expecting Red X level, but sadly, it fell flat.

This is a collection of short stories with each “chapter” told from the perspective of a mythical creature (or their decedents) living in Romania/Ukraine before WW2. Demchuk‘s writing is stark, yet lyrical. I was compelled to keep reading whenever I picked this up. Some of these stories truly chilled me to the bone. However, I‘m not sure I always “got” the connection or theme the author was trying to evoke. 3⭐️ #wintergames2021 #averymerrybingo

My Valentine posing with my lovely #happilyeverafter exchange gift from @BookishTrish
Looking forward to the tagged book. I first came across it on Litsy and am very curious about Eastern European/Russian mythology and fairytales. That chocolate will not last the day 😂

This book came on my radar when it was the first horror novel to be nominated for Canada‘s Giller Prize, and I‘m so glad it did! This was a great read. Old photos are peppered throughout the text as the author writes what he imagines are their stories, all connected to Eastern Europe, Romani, and Russian folklore and a small town in Canada. Fantastic format, lots of creep & suspense factor, and great writing.

#TBR I super mega NEED to go shopping for all these books. Except the tagged book which I recommend YOU read...

BarbaraBB Really? I read and loved almost all the others and wanted to stack automatically and then I read the blurb. Mythical creatures? And now I have to double check with you 😀 (edited) 7y

This book is a collection of short stories, all horror, fantasy, and fairytale that are very much in the style of tales told from the old country. Most take place around the Ukrainian-Russian-Romanian border. Most of them have that added horror of atrocities committed during the World Wars and by the Soviet government. Almost all of the stories are preceded by a creepy photo that was actually taken by a Roman photographer between1935-45. 👇🏼

Reggie Demchuk is a Canadian author who doesn‘t hold back. As a kid who grew up with a grandma telling him stories about the cucu who comes to get the bad kids (more like threatening), or La Llorona, or the witches who took the shapes of balls of fire as they travelled through the night, this was totally up my alley. Super pick!!! 7y

This was an amazing book on the mythology of Eastern Europe. My one regret is that I am unfamiliar with the mythology from there. This was a library find, and I hope that the author has another book in the works.

Oh look! (At the book, not at my expanding waistline...) It's an advance review copy of The Bone Mother, with a beautiful cover design by Samantha Beiko and a gorgeous illustration by Erik Mohr.

BookHermit Sounds intriguing! Very good timing with American Gods series on TV. Congratulations! 8y
