The World of Lore: Monstrous Creatures
The World of Lore: Monstrous Creatures | Aaron Mahnke
111 posts | 70 read | 5 reading | 122 to read
A fascinating, beautifully illustrated guide to the monsters that are part of our collective psyche, featuring both rare and best-loved stories from the hit podcast Lore, soon to be an online streaming series. They live in shadowsdeep in the forest, late in the night, in the dark recesses of our minds. Theyre spoken of in stories and superstitions, relics of an unenlightened age, old wives tales, passed down through generations. Yet no matter how wary and jaded we have become, as individuals or as a society, a part of us remains vulnerable to them: werewolves and wendigos, poltergeists and vampires, angry elves and vengeful spirits. In this beautifully illustrated volume, the host of the hit podcast Lore serves as a guide on a fascinating journey through the history of these terrifying creatures, exploring not only the legends but what they tell us about ourselves. Aaron Mahnke invites us to the desolate Pine Barrens of New Jersey, where the notorious winged, red-eyed Jersey Devil dwells. He delves into harrowing accounts of cannibalismsome officially documented, others the stuff of speculation . . . perhaps. He visits the dimly lit rooms where sances take place, the European villages where gremlins make mischief, even Key West, Florida, home of a haunted doll named Robert. In a world of emotional vampires and zombie malls, the monsters of folklore have become both a part of our language and a part of our collective psyche. Whether these beasts and bogeymen are real or just a reflection of our primal fears, we know, on some level, that not every mystery has been explained and that the unknown still holds the power to strike fear deep in our hearts and souls. As Aaron Mahnke reminds us, sometimes the truth is even scarier than the lore. Praise for the Lore podcast Truth can often be much scarier than fictionsomething Mahnke proves as he dives deep into the world of folklore and the darker side of history in a quest to root out the fragment of truth at the bottom of our fears.Entertainment Weekly Unlike so much horror that needs over-the-top viscera to scare you, this podcast leans on historyfolklore, myth, the stuff people once thought was trueto tell its tales. The Atlantic Narrated by Mahnke in a style that evokes spooky campfire stories, Lore is a history lesson like no other.Esquire

Admittedly, I am late to The World of Lore by Aaron Mahnke. I really don‘t even have a good excuse, especially since I love stories about unexplained things that go bump in the night. Well, at least I finally entered this strange world of creepy creatures, objects, and events. And I‘m so glad I made it. See https://abookandadog.com where I share my related experiences with some of the stories. #MountTBR

AshleyHoss820 Better late than never, as they say! Enjoy! It‘s so well done! ☺️ 2y

I love it!! Although I don‘t know who sent it? I think you forgot to identify yourself! That mug is everything, I am going to use it immediately! Looking forward to the treats, and the books! Ironically, I also sent one of these books to my swap partner! The socks are adorable, I will probably lose them to Maya, she steals from my sock drawer all the time. 😜

Thank you so much! #allhallowsreadswap

I apparently just stopped listening to this podcast in the summer of 2018 (who knows why), but that means I have many episodes to get caught up on while packing today!

Just finished this audio book. Big fan of the podcast, so Zi loved it! Basically just monster-related stories from earlier seasons of the Lore podcast....but was fun to hear them again!

Here‘s the thing: this is the podcast in written form. Obviously I would say listen to Mahnke tell the stories because he‘s amazing. But if you do like I did, and caught up on 100+ episodes really quickly, reading them again is nice. Quick horror stories covering vampires, werewolves, hauntings, creatures such as Mothman, and even Annabelle... what‘s not to love?

Only downside? I wish there were more drawings, because they are gorgeous.

I would not have picked this up if not for the #Booked2019 #relatedtoapodcast prompt but I'm glad I did! Very fascinating background on how urban legends came to be. The stories towards the end really gave me the chills so I ended up finishing this in broad daylight. 😅

I really enjoyed this book. I love folklore and monsters. Some of the stories I was familiar with but a lot them I hadn't heard of. I admit I still haven't heard the podcast this book was written from, but I did watch the Amazon series. As usual the book was better. The series was entertaining though 👹

I enjoyed this transcript of some of the podcasts. I love urban legends and paranormal everything. Not that I‘m a believer... #horror #podcast

Weaponxgirl I love all that stuff too and I love the lore podcast as he tends to be able to keep the creepy feeling without sounding like a nutter who believes every paranormal thing in the world must be true. 6y

Dun dun DUN!

A pick, but I would have been just as happy to have found this series in the library. I'm not jiving with the conversational tone of the writing, which I understand replicates the tone of the original podcast.

This one was a neat read, but I cut my eyeteeth on those dusty old Enchanted World volumes and they're still tops to me.

I struggle with short stories and podcasts. It‘s a failing, I know. But, I switched from print to audio for this one, and it‘s narrated by the author. I‘ve heard that most of the stories in the book can be heard on his podcast, but I enjoyed this collection. It was an easy listen with just the right level of spooky for me. I will probably listen to the other two books as well, because the audiobook format works for me with this one.

Slynn71 Sometimes Lore scares the crap outta me. Have you watched the Amazon series? Three words: Robert The Doll 6y
DGRachel @TamaraH71 I watched the first episode and it scared the crap out of me. I think the audiobook format was good because I could half pay attention which lowered the fear factor. Dolls. Are. Evil. 🙈 6y
Slynn71 Right! That doll. Damn. I recommend listening or reading that one. Im such a fan of Lore, Ill get the books even tho i have the pods saved. 6y
