Sunday morning bellini and some musings on Mansfield Park. Though I will never agree with the author that Fanny is as dull as he claims, I appreciate how he contrasts Fanny and Edmund with the Crawfords and draws parallels to the class divides within his own life. He sums up his take with a bit from an Austen letter written the same year MP was published: "Wisdom is better than Wit & in the long run will certainly have the last laugh on her side."

An enjoyable memoir/literary dive about the ways that reading Jane Austen helped the author mature, discover his core values, and find happiness. I was a bit put off by his gender essentialism at first, which seemed to belittle Austen even as he was trying to praise her, but as he grew up in the pages, the book grew on me. Not sure I'll ever agree with him on Mr. Woodhouse though. 😉

Winding down a quiet, rainy Sunday with some low light and the P&P chapter of this book. In it, the author reflects on how Lizzy taught him what it means to grow up- not through advanced degrees or important jobs, but rather reflecting on your own mistakes and putting in the hard work to change for the better: "For [Austen], growing up has nothing to do with knowledge or skills... it has everything to do with character and conduct." Truer words!

This was a real treat. I just loved Deresiewicz‘ views on Austen and how he made me see her work in a new light. He talked about topics I never thought about regarding Austen‘s novels. Like how the theater in Mansfield Park is a reflection on the entire novel on who‘s in and who‘s out.

That the novel expended so much energy on a play - one that its golden youth put on by themselves, for themselves - made perfect sense to me now. The episode simply made visible what had always been true, that Fanny was and only ever could be a spectator. She may have chosen to sit out the play, but the larger drama of money and status that was being enacted around her all the time - the balls and the games, the flirtation and the matchmaking-

Her prep-school crowd was back in the city after college [...] This was the upper crust, the world of Edith Wharton or F. Scott Fitzgerald updated for the nineties: posh, polished young people who gave off a glow of glamour and sophisticated that drew me a like a moth.

She did not think that her existence was quiet or trivial or boring; she thought it was delightful and enthralling, and she wanted us to see that our own are, too. She understood that what fills our days should fill our hearts, and what fills our hearts should fill our novels.

I have picked this book up two other times and didn't feel it so I put it down. This time, I chose it as the book pick for our bookstore's Jane Austen book club and finally got into it. I'm glad I gave it another chance because I really enjoyed looking at my favorite books from someone else's perspective. The author and I have widely different world views, but I learned new things about books that I've read every year since I was 17 (23 times!)

The last chapters pushed it from a so-so to a pick for me. I still don‘t think I like the guy much, nor do I agree with some of his thoughts on Austen and her work, but I enjoyed his observations on books that I love, and that last page even made me tear up a little.

I finished last night while also finishing some peach moscato, so now that I‘ve edited my drunken kindle-clippings down a bit, I will share some quotes I loved. 🥴🤣

inthegreensandblues I enjoyed this book and plan to share it with my dad (my IRL fellow Janeite!). I couldn't dislike the writer as others have. He could be a bit pompous at times but I find that I'm more accepting of it if the person is also self-reflective, can learn from their mistakes, admit their faults, etc.; such as Mr. Darcy! His textual analysis gave me new things to think on even I didn't agree with everything. 5y

I feel bad being a grouch about this, but I had high hopes & was let down by the banal inanity of an Ivy League (I've already forgotten chunks of his life because I skimmed through it, lol, so I hope I'm right) male grad student learning about life via Jane Austen novels. His textual analyses are the parts I enjoyed best, but even that got annoying. Austen taught him that his gf's POV was valid? Dude, it took you how long to learn to be a person?

batsy It's a book I've been meaning to read, so I'm glad we read it #pemberlittens @sprainedbrain As a blend of memoir & literary analysis, it can be quite a subjective experience for the reader, so it's all about whether you "click" with the author on the page, I would say ? 5y

Decided to take my own,non-sequential approach to reading this memoir, because I have only read 3 of Austen‘s novels so far. As I began reading ch 1, “Emma, Everyday Matters” it quickly became apparent to me that I would get more out of this chapter if I had read the book! Consequently,I am only going to read the chapters covering Austen novels that I have read, and return to this book as I read each new one.

#wintersolstice #dashingdecember readathon wrap up. I finished the 4 checked books and a couple of short Christmas audio books as well: Christmas 1914 which was good and Snow Day which was ok. Still plugging away at JA Education. He has occasional insights that I am glad to ponder but his personal journey as he relates to Jane‘s books is not that interesting. He comes off as pretty pompous. I will finish but continue with small doses at a time.

I‘m late! With the holiday, then my need to binge all of Bridgerton, I missed the Thursday post.😬

I quite enjoyed the author‘s thoughts on Northanger, but agree with @suvata that he struggled with Mansfield Park.😅 Not as much highlighting in these chapters, and I‘m not sure I would actually *like* this guy if I met him, but I do like this:

‘Love, I saw, is a verb, not just a noun—an effort, not just another precious feeling.‘

Cuilin I‘m glad you said you may not like him in real life. I was beginning to think it was me. Everyone seems to be raving about this book and I can‘t help feeling that he (read Austen against his better judgment) and can only learn from the very flawed (his interpretation not mine) female characters. Irritating!!! 5y

I am enjoying the connections he‘s making to Austen‘s novels (I honestly think I listen to anyone talk about Austen and her books, I love them so much), but I don‘t agree with a lot of what he‘s saying. He seems like he might be a smug, self-important sort of guy that Austen would probably make an example of if he were one of her characters. 😂 (edited) 5y

But I do think we see him grow and realize (some of) his faults as he progresses. Though I agree that he may have served as inspiration for John Thorpe in a previous life. 😂 5y

He lulled me in with Emma since we‘re not really meant to like her immediately but when he couldn‘t find fault with Darcy and E Bennett was, though lovable, the one who had to learn not to judge or be proud, I thought this guy may have female lead issues. 5y

inthegreensandblues I just finished the Persuasion chapter and find him growing on me. I think it helps that I've already read the interview at the back and know that it was hard for him to write about his own uglier aspects. 5y

inthegreensandblues Despite his not loving Fanny Price, his points about the novel made me feel better about starting it in Feb. I admit that I haven't read it because after watching two adaptations years ago when I first got into Austen, I just was never really interested in this one. 🙈 5y

I find one minute I‘m nodding in agreement and the next I‘m quietly groaning at his mansplaining. When he talks about how he learned to be less pedantic and learn from his students I wasn‘t feeling all that convinced. MP is the one Jane Austen I haven‘t read yet, but his comparison to his rich friends felt a bit forced... 5y

KVanRead ... that‘s my biggest issue with the book - that his comparisons feel a little too tailor made to fit his “I learned it all from Jane” thesis. And yet he also makes some really lovely and resonant observations... 5y

It was against delusion, against projection, against thinking the same old thing again and again, whether it‘s the idea that all balls are “very agreeable indeed” or that all old houses conceal dark secrets. quietjenn Fur sure the more I read the more I'm convinced that I would not like him at all and I'm really not down with much of his takes on things. I'm just trying to appreciate the ability we all have as readers to make connections between literature and our lives. Even if we are smug man-boy arseholes. 5y

The forced connection between his rich pals and the characters of MP felt mega contrived. I do like him best when he just does close reading of the novels & tries to glean some insight. The aspects of his grad school know-it-all life are relentlessly eye-rolly, to me. 5y

I can‘t believe how much this is resonating with me, especially the parts in ch. 2 about his relationship with his father... I‘m his father, lol! Letting my daughter make mistakes is so hard for me but reading this might be the wake up call I need, Nothing really new in what he says but something about the way he connects it to Austen really brought it home for me 5y

batsy I'm a bit behind so still in the midst of Chapter 1 but I am enjoying the little insights. I really liked the quote @suvata pointed out, too. And I think my own resistance to Emma in the past might have been because it was kind of an uncomfortable mirror, lol. 5y

Cuilin I‘m having mixed emotions and feelings about this book. I really enjoyed the Emma chapter, there‘s something about P&P that bothers me and I‘m noticing a theme that‘s making me irritated. I‘m trying to remember it‘s his experience reading the books so he‘s not wrong. I‘ll keep reading. 🤔 5y

Here is my very loose December TBR for #WinterGames2020 I‘ve been contemplating this and I‘m keeping it very open for mood reading.
🎄I put a few holiday reads + a #teamreadnosedreindeer buddy read, the tagged book for a #PemberLittens buddy read, and A Memory Called Empire for #bbbbc on hold at the library yesterday.
📚 The stack is TBR books from my shelves that I‘d like to get to soonish. I‘ll pull from this stack as needed to fit my mood. ⬇️

And open to any suggestion, though what @inthegreensandblues suggests makes sense since each chapter focuses on a book, so maybe we could focus on a chapter every few days. And I'm also ok with starting a bit later for people still waiting for their copies to arrive :) 5y

Calendar changes from Aug to Sep and suddenly I'm super busy. This book was my constant companion this week. Took a break to enjoy Ricotta Pancakes w/ Banana Pecan syrup and a London Fog. Last of my #austeninaugust2019 reads. I'm actually glad I was so busy because it forced me to slow down & savor book. The most insightful book on Austen I have ever read. Glad I bought a Print copy because it's definitely a keeper. 📚🍌🤓
