Finished my official 'Now' read, although I read/watched a lot more. (Post to come.) Yes there was a lot of verbatim Pride and Prejudice but overall I found it fun. Particularly loved the additional art work.

🎞 1940s P & P. I could let it go that the clothes and hair are all wrong, if they hadn't cut so much of the story. It made Elizabeth and Darcy falling in love come out of nowhere.

It's been a long time since I rewatched the complete Masterpiece Theatre 1980 P & P that introduced teenage me to Jane Austen. I liked Elizabeth! Had forgotten how uptight Darcy was in this one. ⬇️

Non-traditional mostly Emma retelling with a little bit of Pride and Prejudice thrown in. Library Hold that came in. There's a Wait List for it so I went ahead and read. Classic Martha vs New Martha. Martha Stewart's Gardening Month by Month is old favorite of mine. Yes it's a bit dated, but I'm always inspired by it. I usually flip through whatever month we are in. Plus it has seasonal recipes.

I was excited to get my hands the first new Martha gardening book in 30 years - Martha Stewart's Gardening Handbook. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Beautiful book. Garden photography has come a long way. Appreciated graphics of things like Companion Planting. Favorite part was the Monthly Calendars at the end. While it's very informative, feels geared more towards the newer gardener. Would be a perfect gift for someone who's just starting to garden. I enjoyed it, but I'm glad I got a copy from my Library rather than purchasing. I'm sticking with Classic Martha in my Gardening Library. 👩🏻‍🌾 2w

I don't read a ton of Manga but I'm always disappointed. You start with a few pages of beautiful I color artwork and then goes to black and white. It's such a a letdown.

I didn't particularly like the artwork in this. Charlotte looked liked evil doll. I'm not sure what Magnus was supposed to look like. If I hadn't read original I don't think I would have been able to keep up with story.

Maybe Manga just isn't for me.

#PemberLittens for discussion of Pride & Prejudice! Answer here or make your own post just tag me so I see it. My answers:

1️⃣ Swapped between print and audiobook read by the fabulous Rosamunde Pike. Umpteenth reread. When I first started tracking my reading with Goodreads, I estimated that I had read P & P every other year since I was 14. Using that low estimate plus actually keeping track since 2017, makes this my 20th time reading. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig One thing that has changed over the years is how I view Mr Bennet. Younger me laughed at his quips. Older me realizes he wasn't a very good father. Mostly he just hides in his library and ignores his family.

2️⃣ Always Elizabeth. She taught teenage me to never let anyone bully you into something you know is not right for you. Secondly Mrs Gardiner for how she is there for her nieces. ⬇️

1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣ I started 2 Chapters a day but when I got to Pemberley, I sat down with a cup of tea and binge read to the end. All of Volume 3 is my favorite.

4️⃣ All classics. Whenever I read or watch an adaptation I always want to see how the opening line is used: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." ⬇️

1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig To Pemberley, therefore, they were to go.” Whenever I read this, I know I'm to my favorite part.

And of course: “Obstinate, headstrong girl! As a teenager, I was inspired by this to think for myself.

5️⃣ I'd dance with Mr Collins, if it meant I going to Netherfield Ball. ⬇️
1mo
See All 7 Comments
Crinoline_Laphroaig 6️⃣ Lady Catherine. Once she's talking you could pretty much just eat your meal with occasional reply. Caroline is sly. You'd have to be ready at all times to respond to her snarky comments.

7️⃣ This was a great discussion question that was asked in group. I lean towards Willoughby being the worst because he left a young woman pregnant. Although I'm sure the Wickham would have done the same.⬇️
1mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 8️⃣ Tea with Elizabeth, Mrs Gardiner, and Georgiana at Pemberley. No Bingley sisters allowed.

9️⃣ I love Pride and Prejudice 'most ardently'. I'm always happy to reread it. 🎩

#PemberLittens I've been a bit offline for March because my Mr Darcy turned 60! How did that happen? Sisters was my theme for Sense and Sensibility 'Now'. Relationship between Marianne and Elinor is such an important part of the original that I wanted stories that reflected that.

3X reading Miss Austen and I loved it just as much as the first. Can't wait for the show to be available in the States. Definitely in the spirit of Austen. It was my main read managed to finish a lot more.

Stunningly beautiful book. Loved illustrations & memorabilia. Saved for #JaneAustenThenAndNow. 👍for Presentation. Keeping for that reason & because it was gift from a friend. But👎for commentary. I have THOUGHTS #PemberLittens!

Elizabeth Bennet was joking when she said she fell in love with Darcy on “my first seeing his beautiful grounds at Pemberley.”

My next comment has Spoilers for Mansfield Park. 👇

Crinoline_Laphroaig We may not completely ostracize a woman who leaves her husband and runs off with another man like Maria Rushworth but don't act like most people these days would think nothing of it. 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig My BIGGEST complaint is
what author calls 'The Complicated Henry Tilney.'

"Northanger Abbey reads as a lighthearted novel, but Henry Tilney doesn't seem to fit, in part because he doesn't come across as lighthearted."

Northanger Abbey is close 2nd to Pride and Prejudice as my favorite Austen. And Henry Tilney is one of my favorite characters. Yes he
has some serious moments but for the most part he is a charming man with a sunny disposition.
2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Author asks if Jane was in a bad mood when she wrote. Jane wrote Northanger Abbey as a very young woman and she was poking fun at Gothic Novels. So many people don't get that it's very tongue in cheek. 👇 2mo
See All 11 Comments
Crinoline_Laphroaig Enjoy it without trying to over analyze it. Sometimes the curtains are just blue or in this case Henry Tilney is just a lively young man who falls for a sweet young woman. End of Rant. 2mo
TheBookHippie No. Not our Henry. No. 😭😩 We love him. 2mo
Deblovestoread My niece, dad and I were discussing JA over Christmas and talking favorites and NA and Henry is her favorite just for the reasons you listed. 2mo
Andrea313 Henry not lighthearted?! With a few exceptions, all the man does is poke lighthearted fun at everything and everyone. I have to admit, I'm curious to read the author's view even though I think I'd adamantly disagree. 2mo
bookandbedandtea I don't know how anyone could read NA and come away thinking Henry "isn't lighthearted." 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Andrea313 it's only few paragraphs long and it made me rant hard. 2mo

#PemberLittens Stumbled upon this while searching for Sense and Sensibility Retellings for #JaneAustenThenAndNow.

Author seems to have disappeared in 2023.
From her abandoned Blog "Welcome to Twisted Austen, my annual event conceived in the spirit of Halloween, but which really just serves to infuriate and confuse my fellow Janeites.⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig That‘s not being totally fair to myself. Some readers do actually seem to really like these stories, but I write them for my own amusement. It‘s a space where I can explore ideas that really aren‘t marketable."⬇️ 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig A Sense and Sensibility with this the only mention of Colonel Brandon "It was soon learned that Mr. Ferrars had married Miss Steele, an act made possible by the generosity of an acquaintance procured in Devonshire, one Colonel Brandon, who, despite having no interest in the couple beyond pity for the treatment they had endured, had given Edward the living attached to his estate of Delaford in Dorsetshire."⬇️ 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig ⬆️Now that is a thing of horror. 2mo

I was trying to think of General Discussion Questions for 'Now' books. And this is the main one. Add Zombies or set in Space as long as it maintains the spirit.

What does bug me is when Author doesn't do their research. Things like I'll just pop down to bookstore and buy a 1st edition of Pride& Prejudice.

What makes or breaks a 'Now' book for you?

TheBookHippie Stupidity and or not intelligent writing. I think they assume Austen is “bubble gum” and misconstrue her intelligence!!!! The fluff is 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫. I‘ve yet to read one I like 😂🤪🤷🏻‍♀️😮‍💨🙃🤫😱😝😅 2mo
BarkingMadRead So far mine isn‘t much like the original, but I‘m not too deep into it, so I hope that changes 2mo
willaful @TheBookHippie agreed! And I hate when they miss the point of her books. Or just want to add sex. I have read some continuations I like, and some retellings, where there's actually an interesting new take. 2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful @TheBookHippie yes! And some are just cash grabs that you can tell author knows nothing of Austen. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Crinoline_Laphroaig Oh for sure cash grabs!! Happens to Bronte as well as Shakespeare.. 2mo
bookandbedandtea @TheBookHippie I agree that some authors don't credit Austen- or her characters- with much intelligence and tend to write "bubblegum" stories. For me, if the similar names are stripped away, I have to be able to recognize the characters. They must act like themselves, despite whatever new circumstances the retelling finds them in. 2mo
TheBookHippie @Crinoline_Laphroaig OMG. All of that. It‘s why I typically don‘t pick them up. 2mo
bookandbedandtea @Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheBookHippie That book sounds dreadful! I'm making a note to avoid it. 😣 2mo
TheBookHippie @bookandbedandtea I have lists like that!!! 😂 2mo

Sweet read about never being too old for love. Dual Timeline of 1922 and 1987. Twenties period was interesting mix of wanting a career in a typically male field of Pharmacist and Modern medicine vs Apothecary. I really liked that 'Modern Day' was late eighties before cell phones and air travel was easier. All in all, I enjoyed this series. Quick reads. I do wish there'd been a bit of Romance between Torie and Detective Mallard.

#Pemberlittens watching this tonight. First Impressions: Barton Cottage is a MANSION but were bemoaning it's small. But other than that I'm loving. Cheesy in good way.#JaneAustenThenAndNow

Crinoline_Laphroaig @Andrea313 Willoughby just entered and I yelled F🤬boy‼️ 3mo
Andrea313 @Crinoline_Laphroaig He deserves it! Don't go soft like Elinor, hold onto that energy! 🤣 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Overall this was a fun Sense and Sensibility Retelling. Not perfect, a bit cheesy but fun. 3mo

This show up in my Facebook Memories from 2021. I was doing Chapter A Day of W&P and
"Today also starts my #Pemberlittens Readalong......Mansfield Park is the first of Jane Austen's novels to be conceived as well as executed and published in maturity." It‘s been ages since I've read Mansfield Park. Much as Jane wrote this with older eyes, I'm looking forward to reading through older eyes. ? #musingsonmansfield

#Pemberlittens I had so much fun in reading S&S!

📖 Elinor & Marianne's relationship is such a big part of S & S. For February I'm reading story focusing on Jane & Cassandra. Also I wanted to reread before May 4th PBS Premiere. Audiobook is read by fabulous Juliet Stevenson so I'll mostly listen. But it's nice to have a print copy to refer to.

#Pemberlittens it's time for our first discussion of 2025!

You can answer here or make your own post. Please remember to tag me so I don't miss your posts. And search #JaneAustenThenAndNow to see others posts.

I share my answers in comments and then tag everyone. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 1️⃣ I first read Sense & Sensibility
after discovering Pride & Prejudice. Probably when I was about 15 so 1981? For my 7X reading. I read my beautiful Signature Gilded Edition.

Forgotten that a lot of the book takes place in January. I love reading seasonally.

Most struck by the fact that I am now older than Mrs Dashwood (40) and Colonel Brandon (35)!⬇️

3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 2️⃣ Colonel Brandon always and forever. For all my Love of P & P; I must say that S & S has one the best literary heroes in Brandon. Now when I read this classic I always see him as the perfection, that is Alan Rickman from the movie. A quiet unobtrusive man for the most part. However, when you need a Hero he always comes through. ⬇️

3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣ The big Mrs Ferrars reveal. Such a great plot twist! Although we all knew that Lucy was a conniving bit of baggage.

3mo
See All 22 Comments
Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣“But he talked of flannel waistcoats,” said Marianne;" ⬇️ 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig “It is not every one,” said Elinor, “who has your passion for dead leaves.”⬇️ 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Know your own happiness. You want nothing but patience— or give it a more fascinating name, call it hope.⬇️ 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 5️⃣ I'm going to take the lock of hair, but always say it's in my ‘other‘ pocketbook because I immediately threw it away. Hair EWE!

6️⃣ I'm an open book sort of person so I wouldn't be good at the drama of secret love. I'll take dashing and flirty until it goes too far and then I'll dump them. ⬇️
3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 7️⃣ I'm definitely an Elinor. For all my love of silly hats, I'm practical. Marianne wears me out. I always feel that Colonel Brandon could have done better. But, I'm always so happy when Marianne finally realizes that Colonel Brandon is way better than Willoughby.

8️⃣ Colonel Brandon obviously, Elinor because when would be great friends, and Mr. Palmer for snarky comments. ⬇️

3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig 9️⃣ Lessons learned while reading:
Never ever throw yourself at a man.
Don't let your daughter go to the Sin City that is Bath.
Cheap rent often isn't.

📖Next it's choose your own Austen Adventure. Read any adaptation, a topic that interests you or watch a movie. I'll be sharing my picks on February 1st.🎩

(edited) 3mo
Librarybelle I‘m hoping to finish this up in the next couple of days, so I‘ll come back to the questions! But, this is a reread for me, and I‘m not sure what number…maybe 4 or 5… 3mo
dabbe Fun and insightful questions! 🤩🤩 3mo
peanutnine Love these questions! I'll post my answers soon but I agree that Colonel Brandon could have done better. I'm going to read this adaptation next 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @peanutnine that one has been on my stack for awhile. 3mo
bookandbedandtea These are good questions! I've been thinking about my answers but won't have time to post until late tonight or tomorrow. I'm thinking of reading this for February, though it does sound like it focuses more on the Marianne character 🤔 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @bookandbedandtea no worries! Join in when you can. I think I have Jane if Austin on my Kindle. 3mo
julieclair Still reading, but I can answer some of these great questions now: 1️⃣ Reread, maybe the 4th time? I am less tolerant of Marianne than I was when I was younger. 2️⃣ Colonel Brandon, for sure. 4️⃣ The dead leaves quote made me laugh out loud! 5️⃣ Ummm… neither. Thanks anyway. 6️⃣ Secret love. 7️⃣ Elinor absolutely. 8️⃣ Colonel Brandon, Elinor, and do I have to invite a 3rd? Maybe Margaret? Definitely not Mrs. Jennings. Insufferable woman. (edited) 3mo
julieclair 9️⃣ I love this book. Totally enjoyed this reread! It‘s been too long since I last read it. My February read will be (edited) 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @julieclair I'm glad you enjoyed! I think I need to add Jane of Austin to my stack. 3mo
AnishaInkspill fantastic questions, I will answer separately as soon a I g a chance and tag you in 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @AnishaInkspill no worries! Whenever you have time. 3mo

Mehso-so

#ThematicCozies @julieclair I was disappointed in my pick. I couldn't get over Eleanor, who was supposed to be this world traveler with a career in1920s yet she blushed and crushed like a schoolgirl at the first cute guy she saw. Meh.

julieclair Oh too bad! Based on the cover alone, I thought this looked like one I might like to read, so this review is helpful. 3mo

After reading the very depressing Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont, I needed a happier read. Loved this! I highlighted so many great quotes. A few of my favorites:

"She appeared to have jumped out of the frying pan of sexism and into the fire of ageism. The final frontier of isms.

“Mature?!?” said Daphne. “Good grief, I‘m not a cheese. Or a herbaceous border." ?

More in the comments.

Crinoline_Laphroaig “These aren‘t representative bosoms, you know, Kylie,” said Daphne, who was taking her role as educator and protector most seriously. “Genuine breasts come in all manner of shapes and sizes. As do noses, and eyebrows and teeth. That is the beauty of real women. They‘re unique! These women have all spent an absolute fortune having painful, often downright dangerous procedures to make themselves look identical and forgettable......⬇️
3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig You, my friend, must always remember you are perfect just as you are. Do you understand?”

It was time to venture outdoors. He needed to buy some supplies. Just the major food groups: tea, milk, chocolate Hobnobs, and whiskey.⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Fashion isn‘t frivolous, my dear. It‘s armor. Dressed in Dior, you can take on the world. ....Women in Dior never cry in public. Or at all. The only emotion they show is disdain, with a touch of boredom." 3mo

Lots of people found this funny. The have someone impersonate your grandson was. But on the whole I just found it horribly depressing. 😒

Crinoline_Laphroaig So after this I wanted a happier read so I read 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig And this from Acknowledgements rang true: "It often feels like the only role of a pensioner in fiction is that of a sad, lonely, hopeless technophobe, adrift in modern society, who is then saved by the kindness of a younger person. Well, bollocks to that, as Daphne might say. That‘s not the kind of senior I intend to be, nor the one I want to read about. I wanted to create older characters who are bossing it."

3mo
Aims42 I haven‘t read this, but I LOVED ‘How to Age Disgracefully‘. Hopefully it‘s a good palate cleanser for you ♥️ 3mo

Bookish.SAM Lovely view! 😍 3mo
willaful I always feel claustrophobic reading this. Having so much very rigidly maintained public life you have to mask through.
3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful what gets me is how Sir John and Mrs Jennings are always insisting that the Dashwoods must accept invitations. And the teasing. To be at the mercy of everyone. 3mo
See All 7 Comments
peanutnine @Crinoline_Laphroaig I would hate to be neighbors with Sir John for that reason. Like, no I don't have plans but I also just want to sit quietly and read my book, not make small talk with strangers every day 😭 3mo
CaramelLunacy @Crinoline_Laphroaig oof, they are constantly picking at people, aren't they. I'm sure they think of it as kind, but using the Dashwoods to distract themselves from their own boredom is a lot when the power dynamic already makes them quite beholden. 3mo
willaful @Crinoline_Laphroaig yes, so hard on a sensitive person. 3mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful @peanutnine @CaramelLunacy if you're like me, my Social Battery is so run down after the holidays. I think that's why I'm really noticing with this reread. 3mo
