What Would Jane Austen Do?
What Would Jane Austen Do? | Linda Corbett

Witty, sharp and beautifully observed I feel sure Jane would approve Julie Caplin It's a truth often acknowledged that when a journalist and Jane Austen fan girl ends up living next door to a cynical but handsome crime writer, romantic sparks will fly!

#PemberLittens it's your Mid Month Check In for #JaneAustenThenAndNow.

I was trying to think of General Discussion Questions for 'Now' books. And this is the main one. Add Zombies or set in Space as long as it maintains the spirit.

What does bug me is when Author doesn't do their research. Things like I'll just pop down to bookstore and buy a 1st edition of Pride& Prejudice.

What makes or breaks a 'Now' book for you?

Crinoline_Laphroaig Tagged book is great Austen Inspired book, that I just loved. 2w

TheBookHippie Stupidity and or not intelligent writing. I think they assume Austen is “bubble gum” and misconstrue her intelligence!!!! The fluff is 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫. I‘ve yet to read one I like 😂🤪🤷🏻‍♀️😮‍💨🙃🤫😱😝😅 2w
BarkingMadRead So far mine isn‘t much like the original, but I‘m not too deep into it, so I hope that changes 2w
willaful @TheBookHippie agreed! And I hate when they miss the point of her books. Or just want to add sex. I have read some continuations I like, and some retellings, where there's actually an interesting new take. 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig @willaful @TheBookHippie yes! And some are just cash grabs that you can tell author knows nothing of Austen. 2w
TheBookHippie @Crinoline_Laphroaig Oh for sure cash grabs!! Happens to Bronte as well as Shakespeare.. 2w
bookandbedandtea @TheBookHippie I agree that some authors don't credit Austen- or her characters- with much intelligence and tend to write "bubblegum" stories. For me, if the similar names are stripped away, I have to be able to recognize the characters. They must act like themselves, despite whatever new circumstances the retelling finds them in. 2w
TheBookHippie @Crinoline_Laphroaig OMG. All of that. It‘s why I typically don‘t pick them up. 2w
bookandbedandtea @Crinoline_Laphroaig @TheBookHippie That book sounds dreadful! I'm making a note to avoid it. 😣 2w
TheBookHippie @bookandbedandtea I have lists like that!!! 😂 2w
AnishaInkspill I tried it with one, but I had to stop in how it undermined Jane Austen's intelligent. 2w
CaramelLunacy @Crinoline_Laphroaig Oh, I remember how much I hated Me and Mr Darcy... 2w
julieclair Poor writing quality almost always breaks a boom for me. And like @bookandbedandtea , I want the characters to be recognizable. 2w

#Pemberlittens I absolutely adored this book when I was part of last year's Austenprose https://austenprose.com/ Book Tour.

Rereading for #12MonthsofJane I'm doing on Instagram w/ my friend Claire. https://www.instagram.com/p/C1pc0dXL92N/?igsh=ZDI0cnIwaWRuanp0

I has print copy on my Forever Shelf but this time I decided to listen to audiobook. Great narration! Just as delightful on a second read.

I got sidetracked by all the new 2024 Readalongs and things that I didn't finish my Best of 2023. In no particular order Top 2-5.

I needed comfort reads and Jane. September and Winter Solstice were like sitting down to tea with old friends.

LOVED What Would Jane Austen Do? ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Jane and the Lonely Shore by Juliet Fry.
A rare treat for Janeites! This was a gift. Beautifully written with gorgeous illustrations. Author has wonderful Website

Crinoline_Laphroaig @julieclair I've Julia Fry's Jane In Winter. She wrote a lovely Instagram about it today. https://www.instagram.com/p/C1ubR5hInUA/?igsh=eXc4MTk1aGJvNm1t I'm going to be starting in now that holidays are over. 14mo
julieclair Couldn‘t find The Lonely Shore in the Litsy database, but StoryGraph has it, so I stacked it there. 😉 14mo
julieclair What a beautiful Instagram post. I have started following her. Thanks so much for bringing Julia Fry to my attention! I am putting both of these books on my “Most Wished For” list. 💙 14mo

I thought this was very believable and sweet. I liked the female lead a lot. I also liked the mystery of her searching for info about the unknown family member. The slow reveal of that mystery and the slow build onto the romance was well done. This is a closed door romance. (No shame to spicy readers!) You don't need to be acquainted with Jane's work to understand the story. I really liked this and would definitely read more by this author.

So a week into #SummerEndReadathon and I've finished four books. Not a huge time but I'm impressed so far. Some were started before September. @TheSpineView

Aww this was such a cute story and a fun quick read. Its a perfect lazing in the garden book. The plot is interesting and a must for any Jane Austen fan. I loved all the quotes at the start of each chapter. The ending was perfect for the book and i love how her story came together. The mystery of Nigel was an interesting addition to the story. Maddie is very likeable but of course she was outshone by Buster who was adorable. #Netgalley 4*

Excited to be part of Virtual Book Tour!

Everything I want when I read Austenesque. Jane Austen quotes at beginning of each chapter, country village setting, & doesn't try to rewrite the original novels.

Perfect w/ nods to Pride & Prejudice, which I think is hardest to modernize. Nobody's going to starve in the hedgerows these days because they didn't get married.

I want on my forever shelf so I've ordered a print copy. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

#pemberlittens

CaramelLunacy I am always on the lookout for fun Austen-esques! 2y
kspenmoll How can I join in or is it too late? Recovering from surgery this month- good diversion? 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @kspenmoll this was a Tour planned by Austenprose.com and it's over. But the author is delightful. She's sending me bookmarks. Pop over to Instagram and follow her https://www.instagram.com/lindacorbettauthor/ and if you post something she would be grateful. I so loved this book. 2y

Mehso-so

Maddy, recently fired Agony Aunt, moves into the country manor a distant relative bequeathed her. She initially plans to sell up after the 12 months of obligatory residency are up, but, of course, Maddy falls in love with the small town, the quirky townspeople and her grumpy lodger.

julesG I missed chemistry between the two characters. They acknowledge each other, there's forced proximity and all of a sudden they are all loved up. The transition was too abrupt for me, especially on Luke's side (the lodger). Maybe dual POV might have helped here.

2.5 stars that I am rounding up to 3

Good. Perfect for fans of Jane Austen. Even though this a purely romance story there is a subplot of a family mystery that has you gripped to the very end. Loved the characters as they were so real and enjoyable to read. Thank you #OneMoreChapter/#HarperCollins for inviting me to read this via #NetGalley.
