Exams have started at my school. I‘m not sure how it happens, but exam season is always a hot chaotic mess. Kids take two exams a day and either check out or stay at school with very little to do. My people skills are in short supply. I feel like the last two days I‘ve been interrupted every 6 seconds. I‘m just getting some feline therapy tonight.

I‘m done. I just don‘t think this one is for me. At least it isn‘t for me right now. It‘s got the bones of a good novel, but a good editor would help. It‘s 303 pages. I made it to page 177 and I was still waiting for the “suspense” it was billed as. We had a murder on page 7 and even after 170 pages there had been absolutely no clues or hints about why it occurred. I‘m very disappointed. This had some promise.

CaramelLunacy That sounds disappointing 1d

I am liking this book despite typos and some bits that could use a little polish.

Pedantry alert!
Over the last few months I‘ve noticed a linguistic shift that is driving me insane. I first noticed on podcasts (hence the picture), but I‘ve even noticed in work emails (written by educators no less). There seems to be a trend to shorten words. “Priorities” becomes “priors”. “Comparisons” and “Competitions” both become “comps” (which previously was used for “comprehensive exams”). ⬇️

Sace In each case it wasn‘t exactly clear which word they were abbreviating. I find this unacceptable. Educators and bookish podcasters especially shouldn‘t take shortcuts. (edited) 4d
Sace PS: I find it doubly annoying in speech because there‘s no character limit when speaking. 🙄 4d
Amor4Libros Agree!! 4d
See All 20 Comments
kspenmoll I totally agree! 4d
Mollyanna Absolutely agree! 4d
Sace @Amor4Libros @kspenmoll @Mollyanna Thanks for supporting my moment of annoyance 😂 4d
Clare-Dragonfly Wow! I haven‘t encountered those to my knowledge but they sound very annoying! Those words already have meanings that are not really distinct enough from the new ones. 4d
Sace @Clare-Dragonfly I just don‘t get it. 4d
MoniqueReads305 I agree with most of this except comps. I thinks that's publishing language bleeding into education through social media.. When authors sell their books to publishers they provide comps. That's why you'll hear stuff like Little Women meets Lord of the Files. 4d
dabbe This retired high school English teacher agrees 💯! 💙🩵💙 4d
Hooked_on_books “Priors” for priorities?!? I get the desire to shorten words sometimes, but that changes it to a completely different word and thus the meaning as well! Accuracy and clear communication is far more important than shortening a few words! 4d
Hooked_on_books And that‘s absolutely not pedantry! 4d
julesG What about speakers of English as a second/foreign language? That's so wrong. Don't make it harder for us. Language is evolving, of course, but that's just sloppy. An email is not a handwritten letter that takes ages to copy, 3d
julesG ... It's just lazy and confusing. 3d
Sace @MoniqueReads305 Ah! Thanks for the information. It was in fact a bookish podcast that used “comps” so knowing that bit of publishing language makes sense now. 3d
Sace @julesG absolutely agree! And that kind of usage doesn‘t make it into dictionaries either (at least it would take a bit of searching to find). 3d
Sace @Hooked_on_books Right? I‘m seeing/hearing it more than I would like. 😂 3d
Sace @dabbe 🩵 I can imagine how infuriating this kind of thing would be for English teachers. I don‘t think students have started doing this (yet). 3d
rwmg I haven't come across those yet. But I have come across comp as a verb meaning, as far as I can make out, (of a business) give somebody something free to pacify them after they make a complaint. 3d
Sace @rwmg oh yes! That‘s another common one that (I think) most of the general public knows. 3d

#BookReport and #WeeklyForecast combo post

I wasn‘t a very productive reader this week. I only finished one audiobook. I barely made progress on any of my already in progress books and didn‘t even start my one #BookedInTime from last week. Even worse, the next book for book club has been chosen so now I have *two* up next books. #SlowReaderProblems.

I had trouble sorting characters at the beginning of the audio book, but once I did it was an entertaining albeit dark and nutty read. I‘m probably cold-hearted because I wasn‘t super satisfied with the ending. Some people didn‘t suffer enough consequences for my tastes.

Not sure how I feel about a definite article in front of Mardi Gras.

This was on my radar for a while but I hadn‘t gotten around to reading it. I‘m glad it was my book club‘s pick for the May meeting.

McBride created a rich setting and is a master storyteller. Though at times the pacing/plot was not as engaging for me. I have read some reviews that mention too many characters, but for me that was just illustrative of the dependence on community for survival on the margins of society.

I really enjoyed this audiobook. The narrator is Barbara Rosenblatt. She managed to give each character their own voice without sounding forced or ridiculous. I‘ve mentioned it elsewhere but I read the book almost 20 years ago and didn‘t remember a thing. This audio will be much more memorable I plan to move on to the next one in the series, just not immediately. I don‘t want to get burned out.

First of all this series is absolutely amazing. The audiobook is perfection. But the US paperback/hardback edition? I‘m just not liking it. I want a physical copy of this book, but not this. It looks more like a graphic novel. The Spanish editions are gorgeous, but I‘d have to by each one individually and that would cost way more than the complete collection edition.

Captivatedbybooks I hate when publishers do this. Or when they revise the covers after the other books of the series come out and you loved the original version better 🤨 3w

I got so excited when I saw Butter was on Hoopla. I‘m so disappointed. I wish I understood the workings of Hoopla and my library. I don‘t know that we have enough…ANY German speakers in my area for there to be the German language audio.

Will I be forced to buy a copy so I can pretend to participate in #CampLitsy2024?

Prairiegirl_reading 😲 I would be sooo mad!!!! 3w
Sace @Prairiegirl_reading and it‘s the only option. The library doesn‘t even have it. How odd that this random German language audio book is the one offering. 3w

TheKidUpstairs @Sace yup, mine too! 3w
Sace So unfair! *pout* I‘m probably going to end up buying it. It sounds so interesting. 3w
TheKidUpstairs @Sace I'm thinking I'll end up buying the digital copy (hardcover is just too expensive!). One of the libraries o belong to has a physical copy, but I'm 7th on the list so I doubt it'll get to me in time. 3w
Sace @TheKidUpstairs I‘m torn between kindle and paperback. The kindle is less expensive but I do love reading physical books. 3w
CBee I just looked at my Hoopla and the one I found is in German too 😂😂 3w
BarbaraJean Same here--my Hoopla only has the German audio version. It must be something to do with what rights are available where at this point (and for how much)! My library does have audio and ebook versions available (through Libby/Overdrive)--but there's a 24-week wait on the audio and a 22-week wait on the ebook. 🙄 I'm 2nd in line for the print version, though! 🎉 (edited) 3w
Sace @CBee Really wishing I had taken more German classes in college! (edited) 3w
Sace @BarbaraJean it‘s funny how physical copies have shorter wait times. My daughter has had similar experiences with her library. 3w
Chelsea.Poole Hi all @CBee @Sace @TheKidUpstairs @BarbaraJean — librarian here 👋 the way hoopla works for most libraries: there‘s an Instant Borrow catalog which borrowers have access to: anything at all on the platform (unless your library suppresses certain titles/formats/$/etc) Certain publishers work with hoopla to allow their titles to be sold there. Libraries do *not* select certain titles for that platform like Libby/the physical library. More ⬇️ 3w
Chelsea.Poole So there ends up being random stuff there that wouldn‘t be of local interest to your library system, but since it‘s a part of the offerings from the publishers hoopla works with, it shows up in the catalog. Theres really great titles there but also some low quality content that comes along with it. Also, there is a new program hoopla offers called “flex titles” where libraries can purchase titles but users have to wait for them like Libby. 3w
Sace @Chelsea.Poole thanks for the explanation! 3w
CBee @Sace my hubby speaks German. I‘ll have him read it and translate 😂😂 3w

keys_on_fire Have you read PaperBack Crush? I‘ve read through so many that were mentioned but still have quite a few to go! (edited) 3w
Sace @keys_on_fire I have! It was a while ago though and lately I‘ve been considering going back and rereading it. These books are comfort reads for me. (edited) 3w

Sace @keys_on_fire and if you haven‘t read it yet I recommend 3w
keys_on_fire I created a shelf on Goodreads for all the books (plus a few from series that I liked that I wanted to read all). If you ever want to try to read as many as possible like I am, I‘d be happy to become friends there too…assuming you use it as well. 3w
keys_on_fire Maybe someday I‘ll get ambitious and creat a storygraph challenge! 3w
Sace @keys_on_fire I‘m only on The StoryGraph and here but my summer vacation is starting soon and I‘d gladly join you in reading and sharing! 3w

Question for @TheAromaofBooks : is this an acceptable list? Or would it be considered not in the spirit of the rules?

Deblovestoread This is very similar to what I‘m currently using and you will other variations as well. It‘s a whatever works for you challenge 💜 3w
Read4life Looks good! 💙 3w

Sace @Read4life totally inspired by you! 3w
Sace @Deblovestoread yes, I think this is going to be my M.O. so I can meet my other reading commitments, participate in some Litsy events *and* still mood read. 3w
Sace @TheAromaofBooks thanks! I love being able to make it work for me! 3w

TheAromaofBooks Hey Sara, just let me know if you have any other questions or if you want to be added to the tag list!! 😁 3w
Sace @TheAromaofBooks please add me to the tag list. I might not be able to play until June though. Do I understand correctly that we can leave books on our list from month to month if we don‘t finish them? 3w
TheAromaofBooks I have you on the list!! You can absolutely carry books over from month to month, or have a new list each month, or have some new & some old... this is SO loosey-goosey!!! I encourage everyone to use this challenge to help them read more, however that looks. Your list can be specific titles, challenges, topics, categories, book locations (like “living room shelf“), or even random things like “yellow cover“ - or any combination!! Whatever works!!😁 3w
Sace @TheAromaofBooks love it! My reading life changes seasonally so I appreciate the “make it work for you” philosophy. 3w
MaGoose @TheAromaofBooks Hi 👋. Can I join in and be on your list? 3w
TheAromaofBooks @MaGoose - Absolutely!! Check my profile - I JUST posted about May's BookSpin!!! 3w

I had no intention of getting any audiobook membership, but here I am with a new audiobook and a libro.fm account. Thanks @Amor4Libros and @jlhammar 😂

(In fairness I do have other audiobooks that I wanted that hoopla does not have.)

Amor4Libros Yay!! 🤣 And not finding the books somewhere else totally justifies this! 😊😅 3w
Sace @Amor4Libros and the subject matter is kind of my kryptonite. 3w
jlhammar Sorry 😂 Hope you enjoy! 3w
Sace @jlhammar I knew the risks when I came back to Litsy 😂 3w

This is probably more of a post for January, but I wanted to share some photos of my reading journal. I moved to more physical ways of tracking my reading in 2023 and I think it has enhanced my reading life. I still log books on The StoryGraph for end of the year stats report, but my thoughts on a book go into the journal.

From left to right:
“Title” page
Book reviews and entries format
My star rating system
2024 reading goals
Yearly overview

TheSpineView I also find writing by hand in a journal enhances my experience. ❤️🖋 3w

My April #BOTM box arrived today! (I still have selections from over five years ago that I haven‘t read yet! 😬)

Avanders Same 🥸 3w
Sace @Avanders I keep telling myself not to get any more BOTM until I‘ve made a dent in the ones I already have. Alas I can‘t resist getting more. 3w
Avanders @Sace lol. Same. 😁😉 3w

I am posting one book per day from my extensive collection. No description. No explanation. Some will be old. Some will be new. Don't judge me. I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
