#5JoysFriday (a day late) @DebinHawaii

1. Litsy has a permanent place on my list of joys.

2 and 3 While I shouldn‘t be buying more books, Pango and ThriftBooks = spending a little less and not using Amazon as much.

4 and 5 Sunshine and nice temperatures mean sitting outside and reading.

Tag: @BookmarkTavern @kwmg40 @Enchanted_Bibliophile @EKonrad @PageShifter @julesG @CogsOfEncouragement

DogMomIrene Yes on Litsy‘s importance. I‘m so glad I decided to make Litsy my social media platform of choice. 5d
Sace @DogMomIrene Amen! It‘s not that I think it‘s pure escape and the world never appears, it‘s that it‘s a calm and respectful place even when opinions differ (though in the past I was not so calm, empathetic or kind myself. I see that now.) 5d
DogMomIrene @Sace Totally agree. Husband & I named our dogs Bernie & Lizzie after the Senators and we moved to 🇨🇦 because we‘re good with tax💸 going to social supports. Litsy feels very Canadian to me in that people do calmly express their views and folks remain respectful. Please don‘t be hard on yourself. In my early Litsy days, I remember a few people who I don‘t see here now being kind of not kind, and I have no recollection of that ever including you. 5d

Amiable @DogMomIrene How are things looking with Canada‘s next election? I‘m reading things that concern me —Canada can‘t become the next North American hellscape! The U.S. already has that spot filled starting in 2025. 😖 5d
AnnCrystal 💝💝💝💝💝. 5d
Sace @DogMomIrene You are too kind. I just remember a post 2020 election post from a Litten who truly feared what Biden‘s election would mean for her and while I don‘t think I was overly cruel, I also don‘t think I was very empathetic either. It‘s stuck with me. 5d
Sace @Amiable And by gum we have to be number one at something! We can‘t let Canada win. 🤣 🤣 🤣 (so I don‘t 😭😭😭) 5d
tpixie Nice!! I‘m trying to use bookshop.org more- alternating with proceeds going to my local bookstore & Friends & Fiction- since I live their podcast and what they have done for the literary world and Indy bookstores. 5d
DogMomIrene @Sace 🤗🤗🤗 5d
DogMomIrene @Amiable Answer Part 1: So we moved from BC to PEI. The riding we lived in out in BC was razor thin between NDP & Conservatives for the provincial election. The number of “🤬 Trudeau” signs I saw in our small town in 2021 - 2023 when we moved was surprising. The Maritimes are more conservative, but they‘re generally more polite about not agreeing with Liberals & Greens. NDP doesn‘t really get votes here. 5d
DogMomIrene @Amiable Answer Part 2: for federal election, I think anything can happen here. Pierre Poilievre, Conservative leader has his quips of a platform: “Axe the Tax, Build the Homes, Fix the Budget, & Stop the Crime”. And Federal govt is cutting back on # of immigrants they‘ll be allowing in. What I‘m hearing after the Trump win is that some Canadians are concerned about the border, and whether 🇺🇸 will honor Safe 3rd Country Agreement. 5d
DogMomIrene @Amiable Answer Part 3: Canadians I know are definitely concerned about what may happen with Trump. They may be voting for a party leader who they feel can handle Trump. Hence me saying I think it‘s in the air… at present. 5d
Sace @tpixie I have not heard of that podcast. I‘ll have to give it a listen. 4d
tpixie @Sace they are live on fb and YouTube every Wednesday. The episodes are also podcasted. They started in 2019 during Covid with five authors chatting weekly. And then they started having author guests. Now there are four authors who switch off every other week with a guest author & once a month all 4 are together. 4d
dabbe @DogMomIrene We are, too! 🧡🍁🤎 4d
dabbe 🧡🍁🤎 4d
Amiable @DogMomIrene Thank you for a thorough and thoughtful response! I appreciate the insights. Hubby and I scouted Montreal this spring as a potential Plan B— we like that it‘s only an hour train ride back to Burlington (VT) for healthcare if/when Medicare is our insurance. How are you liking PEI? I‘ve never been but want to visit. (edited) 4d
Amiable @Sace I just wish we could be number one at something other than misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia and bigotry. We‘re in a race to the bottom, for sure. 😖 4d
DogMomIrene @Amiable We‘re loving PEI. I do see some parallels btwn here & 🇺🇸South, like “Who‘s your daddy?” kind of attitude. Some Islanders resent Come From Aways moving here, like 1 of our neighbors whose daughter flat out told my husband she doesn‘t like people moving here and buying “their houses”, so I‘m cautious whenever I‘m talking to someone who may be politely resenting my presence. Upside is that more CFAs are here so more potential friends. 4d
DogMomIrene @Amiable Your Montreal Plan B sounds good. Check out Macleans magazine too. They had a cover story on private healthcare options in 🇨🇦. Would be worth exploring options in Montreal. I‘ve heard lots of views about private HC here from Canadians. What I‘ve noticed is that for services I‘ve looked at, the prices are more affordable than OOP expense in 🇺🇸. If you take any RXs, having a 🇨🇦 provider would be easier for refills. 4d
Sace @Amiable *nods head vigorously* 4d

I will be reading for the foreseeable future. I am a public high school teacher. Please explain to me how I am supposed to teach teenagers to respect others, be kind and do what‘s right.

Chrissyreadit No answers or understanding. I am trying to figure out how to provide mental health care to a population that uses medicaid and most likely voted against everything that they benefit from. 2w
Sace @Chrissyreadit Honestly I am without words. My bigger fear is the enablers. Our guardrails barely held last time. 2w
TheLudicReader I don‘t know how I am going to explain it to my students…and I live in Canada. It‘s a shocking result. 2w
See All 26 Comments
AllDebooks I think the whole world is in shock rn. As always in a crisis, man-made or natural. Look fur the hope, the helpers, the positive. But it's ok to take a moment to deal with the sadness and anger. My thoughts are with you all. x 2w
Chelsea.Poole It‘s like reliving the same nightmare. Here comes 4 unstable chaotic years of division and horrific policies. (edited) 2w
Sace @TheLudicReader teachers everywhere are struggling today. 2w
Sace @AllDebooks I will be spending a lot of time on Litsy and reading. 2w
Sace @Chelsea.Poole That‘s why I‘m so confused and hurt. Supposedly we are all tired of the division yet the nation has voted for a party that sows division. 2w
CBee @Sace I‘m right there with you. Gutted. 2w
staci.reads 😥 I am with you 2w
Karisa As a middle school teacher, I agree. All the wrong lessons being taught and validated 😭 2w
Sace @Karisa Yup. I have one class of freshman and they are so ugly to each other. I guess it‘s also the age, but they are also bombarded on social media with people just being rude. 2w
Sace @CBee @staci.reads I‘m trying to tell myself that this too will pass. 2w
DogMomIrene I suspect the US may see many teachers and librarians changing careers😭😡🤯 2w
Scochrane26 @Chrissyreadit I‘m worried about my clients, too. 2 of my teens were anxious yesterday & don‘t understand why people would vote that way. My job also relies on Medicaid, we have a ton of Medicaid in my state yet over 60% of my state voted for him 🤦‍♀️. I‘m really worried how this will affect us worldwide—very easily could become involved in wars. 2w
Chrissyreadit @Scochrane26 same. my state votes overwhelmingly red every election and cannot connect the dots. we also have a majority on medicaid…. 2w
Leftcoastzen Truly a tragic turn of events for democracy. 2w
Librarybelle I rarely discuss politics on social media, but I had to post something on my FB feed this morning. Yet, I feel so drained and numb and without words. I can only hope. 💔 2w
Sace @Leftcoastzen @Librarybelle I am going to lean in to assuming the best in people. I am going to try to remain hopeful. I refuse to believe this is who we are. I say this as someone who lives in a ruby red state. The fear I feel is the same fear I saw from neighbors in 2020. I want to maintain empathy for their fear. Hating them won‘t get me anywhere. I hope I‘m making sense and not sounding defeatist. 2w
Librarybelle It‘s a good way to look at things, @Sace . ❤️ 2w
JenReadsAlot I don't have the words.... 2w
Sace @JenReadsAlot I have words but they aren‘t the right ones. 2w
BarbaraJean Modeling respect and kindness and compassion really does make a difference… as well as all the things you mention: assuming the best, maintaining empathy, remaining hopeful. (Good for your own mental health as well!) This is a terrible turn of events, but teachers like you make a difference and are so needed right now!! 2w
Hooked_on_books Over sixty million people voted for something different than this. That‘s not a small number. It means there‘s a whole lot that feel how you do. Channel them. 2w
Sace @Hooked_on_books it is not. I‘m not playing the angry hate game anymore. There‘s work to do but I believe in us. 2w
Sace @DogMomIrene But that‘s not an option for me right now 😢 2w

A pick for me. I appreciate the author reading the research so I don‘t have to. He may not have been super objective but honestly I don‘t mind. I wasn‘t looking for scientific objectivity. In this book and his book Lost Connections he talks a lot about collective energy and human connection. We aren‘t all scientists and researchers. Some of us need the anectdata to get our thoughts rolling. I‘m glad this book crossed my path via @AvidReader25

My daughter and I are wanting to do a reading retreat in June 2025. We are thinking 2 nights in Nashville (the halfway point between the two of us). We are thinking of staying near Parnassus books. I would welcome any advice, tips whatever.

LeahBergen I haven‘t been but I definitely want to go to McKay‘s the next time I‘m there! It‘s a huge used bookstore. I bet @britt_brooke would have some great recommendations! 1mo
britt_brooke Thanks, Leah! Parnassus is a must! And grab a donut at Fox‘s Donut Den in the same strip mall. Get the pink star if they have any! Definitely visit The Bookshop in East Nashville if you have time. It‘s small, but the curation is impeccable. Those are my favorite spots. McKay‘s is awesome, but huge and overwhelming. Not a bad thing; just a lot for me. 😅 1mo
britt_brooke Novelette in East Nashville is a nice little book shop, too. There are tons of good food options around there and other cute little shops. (edited) 1mo

BarbaraBB Maybe @Megabooks has some additional suggestions? 1mo
Sace @britt_brooke Thanks! I‘m taking notes! 1mo
Megabooks I‘ve only been to the Knoxville McKay‘s, but despite its size, I found it to be well organized and great for used books. As far as non-book places near Parnassus, Hillsboro Village is full of cute shops and small lunch places. (21st st runs all the way from Green Hills, where Parnassus is, through Vandy‘s campus and (I think) all the way downtown.) There are lots of restaurants in Green Hills, but I haven‘t had luck with vegetarian AND ⬇️ 1mo
Megabooks Gluten free, which I need for medical conditions, so I can‘t speak to restaurants there. There is a large (upscale) mall directly across the street from Parnassus. You can find interesting places all over Nashville depending on what your other interests are. 1mo

1. No. That‘s my husband‘s job. According to him I pick crappy candy.

2. Puritanical, superstitious people

TheSpineView Is there even such a thing as crappy candy? Thanks for playing! 1mo
Sace @TheSpineView right? But apparently my husband thinks so. 1mo
CogsOfEncouragement I gave this five stars when I read it two years ago. Enjoy! 1mo

InkedBookworm13 What is considered crappy candy? 😕 1mo
Sace @CogsOfEncouragement it‘s a reread for me. It‘s definitely a good one! 1mo
Sace @InkedBookworm13 well, I‘m a huge fan of circus peanuts (you know those orange spongy candies?). 1mo

I really enjoy the camaraderie of the #NancyDrewBR but this one felt like a slog to me.

I‘ll be spending the #hyggehourreadathon with Nancy Drew, China Rich Girlfriend and my audiobook. I‘m starting a little early and I‘ll probably read for more than an hour. I‘m just drinking water. Feeling relaxed and grateful for the day off tomorrow.

Bob Snell, Ben Wooster…I swear I‘ve seen these names in Nancy Drew before. 😂 Ok. Maybe not really but I do find the surnames in Nancy Drew books interesting.

#NancyDrewBR

Ruthiella When I read that, I thought of Bertie Wooster. 😃 1mo

Oof. I knew I was going to be the points slacker but I didn‘t think it would be this bad. 😂

A cute cozy. I enjoyed it but not enough to keep going with the series.

There were a few words from the #HauntedShelf #WordSearch but alas it would be difficult to log those since it was an audiobook.

Question for @PuddleJumper and @Jadams89 -I am keeping track of my points on the Google sheet but not really in these posts. Should I also be keeping up in the posts? I‘m just finding it easier to go back every few days to track points.

PuddleJumper Track however is easiest for you 1mo
Sace @PuddleJumper Thank you! I‘m pretty sure I‘m going to win the award for least amount of points but I‘m having fun. 😂 1mo
PuddleJumper @Sace That's the most important thing! 1mo
