Librarybelle I think it really shows society‘s abhorrence of different classes getting together—Staunton has to essentially hide his bride! These works are near the end of the Gilded Age, and there is so much disparity between the rich and the poor and the lack of attention to the poor by the rich. 1mo

dabbe I also have to add that Staunton really pisses me off. You put your wife in a lonely place because you want that inheritance money from an uncle you can't stand. The uncle states to Holmes that he has absolutely no interest in Staunton's personal life, so why would Staunton worry about being disinherited? He basically locks her away in a castle (like in a fairy tale). And she willingly goes along with it? #oy! 1mo

Cuilin He fell love, they married, she had to hide and then she died!! Says it all. 1mo

1. This month's book has two different versions again:

The original 1937 edition features a whispering statue that resembles Nancy and Nancy's investigation in locating a client's estranged husband.

The 1970 edition also has a whispering statue that looks like Nancy, but Nancy investigates a swindle taking place involving her client and rare books.

Which edition did you read? Overall thoughts on the book? #NancyDrewBR

kwmg40 I finished the 1937 edition, which I liked overall, even though I found the secondary characters rather exaggerated.. There were aspects that made it feel quite dated, especially the part where it cost Nancy $5 to have the bumper on her car repaired. 1mo

CogsOfEncouragement I thought the 1970 edition was a fun ND caper with her friends there to help, including a devoted Ned. A huge falling book NOT hitting her in the head was a nice touch for those of us keeping track of such things. 1mo

Ruthiella I read the 1970 version as evidenced by the use of the word “groovy” twice! 😂 This was quite action packed and as usual, the two mysteries turn out to be related. 1mo

Ruthiella @kwmg40 In the 1970 version, Ned notes that the price tag of $28 for a rare first edition is quite high! I googled it and that would be around $250 in today‘s US dollar value. 1mo

Sace I read the 70s version. I felt like the two mysteries worked better than some of the other books with two mysteries. 1mo

Nancy Drew 13: The Mystery of the Ivory Charm | Carolyn Keene

so-so

So close between So-So and Pan. I chose So-So for those who want to read the entire series. But, whoah! Racist, tedious, and poorly written. While there was danger, hidden tunnels, kidnappings, and arson, none of it felt urgent. Nancy even goes to a weekend party at her boyfriend‘s fraternity even though the young boy she‘s “protecting” has been kidnapped. WTF, Nancy? Hard not to eye-roll throughout this one. #oy #NancyDrewBR @Librarybelle

1. This month's discussion is slightly different, as the plot lines for the original and the revised editions are extremely different. Questions 2 and 3 will look at the 1934 and 1965 editions respectively.

Which edition did you read? The 1934 plot line features twins adopted from a foundling home, and Nancy wants to reunite the twins with their real mother.

The 1965 edition has The Flying Dutchmen, an iron bird, and record piracy. #NancyDrewBR

Bookwormjillk Mine was the 1934 edition. This was the first 1930‘s book I read and was surprised at how different the characters of Hannah and Mr Drew were written. Hannah was treated much more like a servant, and Mr Drew wasn‘t nearly as supportive of Nancy. (edited) 4mo

RE: Nancy Drew: What do you do when you're halfway finished with a library loan you've already waited 52 days for, and it expires, and you're told you have to now wait 96 days to borrow it again? You cave into Amazon and buy the damn thing because (of course), you can't wait that long and have to finish it--even though you've read it before in your youth. #oy 🙄
