I‘m not a non fiction dude but I figure this books is a necessary read for all Americans, kinda like how the Constitution is a necessary read for the president. Couple of chapters in I‘m ready move Silence of the Lambs down to my second favorite book about the FBI, and Andrew McCabe is now my favorite G-Man.

Dolores Claiborne | Stephen King

Pickpick

To label Stephen King as the “King of Horror” is inaccurate. The man writes great American literature, period.

It starts with this great American woman, Dolores Claiborne. She‘s a maid, a suffragette, and a tough mothertrucker. She works her hands to the bones, making an honest living, only to have her man fool her again and again. But Dolores‘ mother didn‘t raise no fool. She raised a hero. If being a bitch is what it takes, so be it. I ❤️ her.

Prairiegirl_reading I totally agree about pigeonholing him into the horror category. It may be true but he‘s more than that! 6y
EricQiao @Prairiegirl_reading Absolutely! The fact that they design the book cover to reflect some kind of spooky tale doesn‘t help the matter, either. 6y
Prairiegirl_reading @EricQiao true, probably designed to appeal to the faithful horror fans even though it‘s not horror at all. 6y

Senator John McCain passed away peacefully today. I remember the 2008 presidential campaign, when his supporter called Obama an Arab and untrustworthy, McCain took her microphone and corrected, “he is a family man who I just happen to have disagreement with on fundamental issues.” He ran that campaign with grace and honor. I respect him immensely. RIP senator.

The Stand | Stephen King
post image

Whenever I feel like reading The Stand again I watch the miniseries. It‘s an okay adaptation, bit dated. Not sure about Mother Abigail‘s portrayal. She‘s kinda creepy. If I dreamed about her and Flagg I might‘ve joined up with the latter. There‘s a touching scene where the survivors of the plague sing the National Anthem. That always gets me. Uncle Stevie makes a couple of cameos. The man cannot act. And yes, that‘s a candle stand.

Joe Hill believes that an extra from Jaws is the Jane Doe known as the Lady in the Dunes. Color me tantalized!

“When faced with grotesque, inexplicable tragedies,” he said in the WaPo article, “one of the ways that human beings master their own anxiety and concern is by trying to reduce it to a crossword puzzle, and if you have the right inspiration, you can bring order back to chaos.”

Nute I have hardback editions, leather-bound editions, special collectible editions of Classic Literature, but I actually prefer to read my inexpensive paperback Barnes and Nobles Classics Series editions. I like the paper they print on, the font type and size, the introductions and the footnotes/endnotes system. So I have duplicates and triplicates of books for reading purposes and collecting purposes. 6y

Nihilistic tale, minimalistic prose, Heinrich Lyle would make Kurt Vonnegut proud. Follow a Dick‘s journey into the twilight zone as the moral of the story unfolds, which I guess is what not to do if you were well endowed? Amidst his wisdom what I'm constantly struck by is Lyle‘s prose. It's tighter and hotter than yoga pants. Sexy is the definitive word. Read this book and be aroused. Now I want more. FYI that‘s a massage tool in the pic. Jeez.

An article today in WAPO is titled “In China and India, there are 70 million more men than women. Here are the consequences.” The consequences, which I‘ve long observed, was fictionalized in my book, The Only Girl in China. While fiction is also meant to be entertaining, one cannot ignore the severity of the underlying issue. The article concluded with women in India taking a stand. Well, China, your turn.

Weaponxgirl That looks really interesting, I read an article a few years ago about how one of the consequences of there being less women in China was that women of a certain class actually ended up with more power as they got to pick from a lot of men who were desperate to get married. They were staying in their own careers longer and experiencing freedom to a level not possible before. 7y
EricQiao @Weaponxgirl That certainly is the case in major cities that offer more opportunities. But China, like America, is huge. The gender ratio gap is more prominent in the rural where late term abortion and female infanticide are practiced and unregulated. In these regions the word “career” isn‘t part of folks‘ vocabulary. Moreover, China distinguishes between rural and city citizenship. Imagine if you‘re from Idaho and can‘t live in NYC. How F‘d up? 7y
Weaponxgirl My iPad just died when I tried to reply 😡 I thought it must be a city thing I just found the article really interesting. That's crazy about the rural and city citizenship! I had no idea. Whenever I learn anything about China I know I'm only just scratching the surface as its a huge country with such a long and complicated history. 7y

Finally binge watched the 4th season. I‘ve been saving it. Oh boy is it amazing! A show that serves as a prequel to Treasure Island, I wish television did this sort of thing more often. Modify just enough of the source material to make it a new thing. Pirates, argh!

Vbrrgirl Excellent show - we enjoyed it very much. 7y
Readergrrl I really enjoyed this series and I was SO disappointed that it ended so quickly. What a diverse and complex set of characters. I was constantly switching my allegiances. After the series I decided to read (listen to, actually) Treasure Island while I was on vacation in Florida. Perfect locale and so cool to have a new perspective on the names. I first read Treasure Island almost 40 years ago so o had forgotten much of the action! 7y
EricQiao @Readergrrl I was on team Flint all the way! And Teach... 😱 For me, as an immigrant, I‘m constantly in awe of the utter fearlessness of the men and women at the foundation of western civilization. Many years ago I #DNF Treasure Island. Now I‘m ready to pick it up again. 7y

Fewer life lessons here compared to Out of Sight, Rum Punch (aka Jackie Brown), but just as many dumbass criminals and smartass remarks. I was young and impressionable when I read The Shinning. Now older and desensitized to violence & gore, I was still being kept awake at nights by Doctor Sleep, in this seedy motel room, no less. The themes of death and mortality were definitely highlights. But the real "shining" thing for me was King's writing. One hell of a page turner, this one. Bought the copy overseas for 1.5X the retail, not an ounce of regret. That's saying a lot!

Pickpick

"Hearts are tough, Most times they don't break. Most times they only bend."

Well my little heart is pretty bent out of shape over this collection. No body writes the innocence of childhood like Uncle Stevie. The language in here is beautiful. The stories are magical. The characters, dare I say, are full of hearts. I didn't want this book to end. Good thing there's a movie to tie me over. I have a feeling I'm gonna re-read this at some point. ?

KathyWheeler Have you read the Dark Tower series? 7y

KathyWheeler @EricQiao I remember when King was hit by that van and very seriously injured; when I first heard the news, my first awful thought was, "Oh no! The Dark Tower isn't finished!" Listened to the entire series recently-- it was nice to not to have to wait for the next book. 7y
KathyWheeler @EricQiao I know! Neil Gaiman saying "George R R Martin is not your bitch" is all well and good, but what if something happens to him before he finishes the story?! 7y
EricQiao @KathyWheeler Ha-ha! In an interview with Stephen King, Martin said the creepiest thing a reader sent him was a paperback of Misery. I reckon that reader was responding to Gaiman. Like saying, "Yeah, tell that to Annie Wilkes." ? (edited) 7y

Finished this brick at last! I honestly wanted to bail during the first half. It was so rambly, I had to get through by skimming blocky paragraphs. But I'm glad I stayed on board because the second half was one wild ride! The gang moved to a new setting, met new characters and had some actions. Even the Riddler from Batman made an appearance. 😝 It ended on a cliffhanger. My advice: make sure the next volume is within reach. You'll need it!

Pickpick

This is something like Being John Malchovich meets Lord of the Rings. There's a fellowship, a tower to get to, and doorways into people's minds. It's so outlandish and yet, utterly entertaining. Detta, the vilest of characters, has got to be one of my favorite King's creations. I imagine Uncle Stevie had one hell of a time writing her dialogue. I know I would. Now, on to the next installment! #DarkTowerReadAlong

Mehso-so

Short book, but felt long because it reads like an over-stuffed prologue. I reckon the story could've wrapped up in 100 pages or less. The premise is interesting but the writing is uninspired, dialogues made no sense most of the time. Best thing about it is the author's afterword, which encourages me to read the next installment. Will start tonight and I know it'll be good, after all, it can't be worse than this. 😁

Reviewsbylola Hahaha, I love your optimism. I hope you're right! 7y
DrexEdit I think the drawing of the three is much more traditional Stephen King writing. I found the two books to be almost totally different. In his intro to D3 he blames a lot of what dark tower is on his age at the time he wrote it. D3 was a wild ride! 7y
Alfoster Then glad I never read these as I love all the other King books! 7y

EricQiao @DrexEdit Heard a lot of good things about D3. I'm believing the hype! 7y
EricQiao @Alfoster The movie's coming out this summer! I gotta read these before the movie! 😅 7y
Alfoster Oh dang! I'll just see the movie instead! Too many other good books to read😍! 7y

I'm a fan of Uncle Stevie's but somehow The Dark Tower series was #DNF for me in its first entry. Now that the movie's coming out I figure it's about time I give it another try. #ReadtheBookBeforetheMovie

NerdyRev I say it often, I dig Stephen King, but he needs an editor to trim his books. He is so creative, but I don't want to read 700 pages all the time 😀 7y
monkeygirlsmama I also couldn't get into this one. That was over 20 years ago though, and I've since been told on multiple occasions how I have to give it another go. Apparently it's quite incredible, or so the rumors go. 😋I haven't yet gotten around to giving it a second chance, but I intend to at some point. 7y
Kpiper I agree 100%, but I don't think I can give it another go. 7y

Kangaj1 Is that series scary? I can't do scary now, though I used to read him in high school. Just read 11/24/63 and LOVED it. Would love to read more like that. 7y
EricQiao @NerdyRev @Kpiper Oh man, 10 pages in and I'm already discouraged. @monkeygirlsmama I'll finish at least the first one and let you know if it's worth another go. @Kangaj1 I think it's more fantasy than horror. 7y
Gayan This is the only King I haven't been able to finish but @Josie says it gets much better after the first one so I'm going to give it another go. 7y
EricQiao @Gayan @Josie I wonder if one could skip the first 😅... would I miss out much? 7y
Josie @EricQiao you can definitely skip the first one. What I would do is just go online and read a summary of it. That will give you all the background you'll need for Drawing of the Three (which is my favorite!!!!) and the story pretty much retells itself in the second book. You'll be fine to skip it. 7y
Bookdragon69 I thought the same as you so I read the book. I didn't really like it and it didn't make me want to read the series. Maybe I'm just not the fantasy genre type. I am still going to watch the movie. I'm a M.M. fan. 😍 7y
JoRead I really need to get to it before the movie comes out! 7y
Bcox129 I agree with Josie, don't spend too much time on the first book. The Drawing of the Three is excellent. I am not much of a fan of fantasy, but ended up loving the Dark Tower series. I hope the movie does it justice. 7y

I've been a Transformers fanatic since I was 5. I remember my first toy, my second and third. The cartoon was one of the very few American shows that made it to China at the time, and boy was it awesome! Many fanboys have gone on to become toy designers or comic book writers, while others like myself simply oblige with our wallet. On quiet weekends I quietly bust out my toys and comics and have a quiet blast. How's that's for #introverting. 🤣

Suet624 That's awesome. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I'm trying to do my parental duty and teach my son that Optimus Prime is best possible role model. Just got to keep him away from Michael Bay and I think we'll be alright. 7y
EricQiao @TobeyTheScavengerMonk I agree! Bay retained none of the values the original cartoon taught me as a kid. You might want to avoid showing your son the 1986 movie as well. Prime's death scene can be quite traumatic. 😔 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Truth. That scene and the one where Ultra Magnus can't get then Matrix of Leadership to open messed me up as a kid. 7y

riversong153 I'm confused and disheartened by this buyers reaction. 😒It's ok, you'll survive without that sale . 7y
Alfoster Eric--would you be wiling to speak at my high school sometime next year (even tho I'm retired)? It's in Santee and they have a Readers & Writers Club with guest authors. There's no $ involved but kids love it (and may buy books). You can respond to me in email if you like. Just a thought about how we can build bridges as there are a lot of refugees in that area. No pressure obviously😀. 7y

kylienoele This person obviously does not deserve to read it! Sorry you had to deal with someone like that :( 7y
NovelGirl82 @tjwill You won't be disappointed!! 7y
NovelGirl82 Honestly, I wish that I could say that I'm shocked, but I'm not. I'm obviously outraged, and incredibly sad that this is the world that we live in & that my nieces and nephews have to grow up in, but sadly I'm not shocked. There is just too much of this mindset. She should be ashamed of herself. 7y
EricQiao @NovelGirl82 Aw we can't be pessimistic now. Littens like you and everyone here make the world a better place. Hugs all around. 🤗🤗🤗 7y

Redwritinghood WTF? I make it a habit to ignore stupid people. I think this may be one of those people to ignore. 7y
