Night Moves | Nora Roberts

Last post about this book, I promise. But I have a serious question. I'm not a big romance reader, so could be wrong, but do US romance authors tend to glorify #rapeculture? This isn't the first book I've come across where the woman says back off and the man gets all stalker-like and she finds it charming. And in the clip to the right it's a case of her body saying yes, so he feels free to ignore her very clear verbal no.

Smrloomis Ugh, the bit on the right! 7y
LibrarianRyan In the late 80s and early 90s yes. You found it in quite a few romances by Roberts and mainstream authors. 7y
LibrarianRyan It's highly annoying. It was bad enough then but now it just pisses me off. I love Sandra Brown but in one of her newer books the woman falls in love with a man who held her captive and treated her like crap. But it was okay once she discovered he was an undercover agent. Ughhhhhh. Worst brown book I have ever read and I love her books. 7y

Samplergal I don‘t read that crap because of that. I‘ve seen too much rapey and coquettish crap in those books. Usually when that happens, I don‘t finish. And I finish all my books. #enough. #metoo 7y
Leniverse @LibrarianRyan Ah, yes this book is from the 80s. I would hope it was less prevalent now, but on the few occasions I've attempted a newer American romance, I've found an Alpha male hero who won't take no for an answer and completely rearranges the heroine's life until she gives in. Maybe it's the 50 Shades effect or something. 7y
EllanaRose I got approved for a NetGalley book and got trashed for saying it romanticised abuse. It still happens and is pitched as romance. I hate it, and I hate that fans of an author will defend the book without seeing any other opinions. 7y
LibrarianRyan @Leniverse the alpha male is defiantly a US romance trope. Even today. 50 shades made it worse. You really only find truely strong women in US mystery thrillers, or if you are looking specifically roman it's in urban fantasy romance. Annoying as heck. 7y
Leniverse @EllanaRose Urk. Honestly, you can love an author and still think they messed up in a book. Loyal fans should hold the author accountable, not just applaud whatever they do. 7y
Leniverse @LibrarianRyan Yes, I've found that I can enjoy urban fantasy/paranormal romance, but even there I prefer the romance to be a side plot. I figure maybe I just don't like romance, but then I do also enjoy the occasional fluffy British romcom! I just can't stand alpha males unless they are werewolves. 😂 7y
BookwormM I do find this a lot in Romance books especially period romances it is annoying 7y
CoffeeK8 I feel like there‘s starting to be a change in this, but yeah, you get a lot of romances with this. I find the biggest shift happens along YA romances, urban fantasy and some books by women of color. If you look for books with heroes billed as Beta heroes or a friends to lovers romance I find you can also get more positive heroes. 7y

Ended my membership with the NRA. Books, not bullets. I support the students of Stoneman Douglas, and everyone marching today. #enough #MarchForOurLives #VoteThemOut #neveragain

KathyWheeler When I was a teenager, the NRA supported background checks, licensing, and a lot of other sensible gun restrictions. Back then, if I owned a gun, I would‘ve joined. They‘ve been taken over by nuts though, and I couldn‘t support them now. (edited) 7y
EricQiao @Redwritinghood @Jas16 @CoffeeK8 @QuietlyLaura 🙇 🙇 🙇 @KathyWheeler I agree. They want more guns on the street, more fear, more people to arm themselves for self defense, then more would support the 2nd amendment, more need for the NRA to protect their right and ultimately, more money in their pocket. It‘s a vicious cycle and I‘m sick of it. 7y

Nope. Just couldn't do it. I made it two hours into this audiobook and thought if I had to listen to any more indulgent bitching from the two main characters, then I might just drive off an interstate overpass. Introspection gone wrong...just too much. #enough
