Friends, have any of you read books on Leonard Cohen that especially spoke to you? I‘ve found in the past few years music memoirs/biographies on artists who‘ve held a special place in my life keep showing up in my best of lists at the end of the year, so I was thinking of artists I might read about next year. I know there are a ton of books about Cohen floating around out there, but I don‘t know anything in particular about any of them…

ChaoticMissAdventures I don't know of any but I feel like his life would be fascinating to read about! Hope you find one. 11mo

Thought I‘d try this - I don‘t do well with challenges and this seems like an easier one 😊 SO! Litten friends, I need 12 recommendations of books you think I should read this year. One recommendation per person, please.
Just no nonfiction, I don‘t have the bandwidth for it 😂 Not a huge sci-fi fan either but I don‘t rule anything out! Thanks! #12bookschallenge

I need short story recommendations.

I haven‘t been on in a while. I haven‘t been reading in a while either. I‘m in one big ole depression slump. I can‘t focus on much but maybe I can handle short stories. I honestly don‘t know.

Rachel.Rencher I love the ones written by Joyce Carol Oates, Edgar Allen Poe, or I have on order the tagged one which I've heard good things about. I hope your spirits lift. ❤ 5y
inthegreensandblues I read this years ago and just remember that I loved it, have long been thinking of a reread. 5y
Bookzombie Do you read any series that have in-between stories? They would be short, but with characters you probably already love. I hope you feel better. 🙂 5y
See All 8 Comments
ravenlee I can‘t help much, as I struggle with short stories, but I second the Edgar Allan Poe rec. I hope you can get some rest and recovery soon. Good luck! 5y
BlameJennyJane This one is $1.99 today on Kindle U.S. so good. Feel better. 5y
annamatopoetry Kelly Link is both brilliant and in-season. Hope that helps! 5y
Reggie It‘s October 1st and this is one of THE definitive zombie short story collections EVER. Give it a try. These authors use zombies to talk about voting, abortion rights, second chances at love, everything. And the first story is about a teacher, and you work in the schools right? Give it a shot. 5y
MemoirsForMe When I‘m in a slump, I turn to comic and graphic novels. Maybe Paper Girls or Lumberjanes? Feel better! 🤗❤️ 5y

I‘m at the point with my year long challenges where most of the books I have left to read are the ones that I‘m really stumped on what to read (or really worry I won‘t enjoy what I pick). I‘d love some suggestions on these prompts. #readharderchallenge #readingwomenchallenge

RadicalReader @MelissaSue81 a wonderful book I highly enjoyed was The One by John Marrs absolutely amazing book with a perfect plot and chapters that catapulted you from one to the next 6y
xicanti I highly recommend YOTSUBA&! by Kiyohiko Azusa for manga and anything by Courtney Milan for historical romance. I think THE GOVERNESS AFFAIR is still free on most, but not all, ebook retailers. 6y
xicanti Also, Attica Locke writes excellent mysteries. THE CUTTING SEASON is a great one to start with. And if your Mexican book can be by someone of Mexican descent, not someone born in Mexico, I highly recommend 6y
See All 17 Comments
WhatWouldJaneDo I used by Alma Katsu for mystery/thriller by an AOC. Planning to read Certain Dark Things for #ownvoices Mexico and maybe Terra Nullius for Oceania. 6y
DGRachel I highly recommend Ausma Zehanat Khan for mystery/thriller by WOC. This is probably the book I gift the most. 6y
Laughterhp For Mystery of WOC, I‘m planning to read 6y
Laughterhp I listened to the original audiobook for (45 mins and translated from French) 6y
Laughterhp For #ownvoices - Oceana, I‘m trying but haven‘t read yet 6y
Laughterhp I agree with @xicanti Courtney Milan for historical romance! 6y
Laughterhp I‘m stuck for the rest of the other ones as well! Business book, Manga, Prison book, and #ownvoices Mexico! 😬😬 (Sorry for blowing up your comments) (edited) 6y
audraelizabeth For historical romance by aoc i chose breathless. 6y
ErikasMindfulShelf For written in prison I‘m going to read this book available on Hoopla 6y
ErikasMindfulShelf For ownvoices Mexico I‘m going to read 6y
ErikasMindfulShelf For mystery by woc I would recommend Attica Locke 6y
LoverofLit For Mystery by WOC I'm reading 6y

I‘ve only read two books published this year and haven‘t really bought any new releases lately. What are some good 2019 books that have already been released that I should be reading? 📚

MelissaSue81 I actually haven‘t read many either! The ones I‘ve read are On the Come Up, Parkland, and Shortest Way Home. All were very good. 6y
charl08 Which two have you read? 6y
erinreads @charl08 Parkland and 99 Percent Mine 6y

erinreads @MelissaSue81 I read and enjoyed Parkland! I keep forgetting about On the Come Up, so I need to get to that one. Thanks! 6y
charl08 I loved this too but v dark 6y
erinreads @charl08 Thank you! Both sound intriguing. Adding to my list! 6y
charl08 If you like apocalyptic fiction, Ben Winters has a new one out. 6y
Anitareads If you like retellings, I would recommend this one . 6y

Itching to start a new book but I can‘t pick one!! (I happen to be SUPER indecisive. 🤷🏻‍♀️)

I‘d love to pick a book from the top row- those lovelies have been on my shelf a while and are giving me a prolonged guilt trip. 😅😶

Any recommendations? 🥰

Looking for recommendations! My husband is starting to listen to more audiobooks but he likes the thrillers and that‘s not really my jam. Anyone have any good thriller audio recommendations that‘ll keep his interest in books going? Thanks!

SitsWithaBook I don't know if it's a thriller per se but a favorite compelling read of mine to reccomend is I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh. 6y
silentrequiem Fantasy okay? The Peter Grant books by Ben Aaronovitch are great in audio. They're like supernatural crime solving with gods and ghosts and whatnot. 6y
rockpools Attica Lock‘s books are really well done on audio. I especially liked 6y
See All 10 Comments
JoScho The Bill Hodges trilogy by Stephen King is fantastic on audiobook 6y
CareBear Thanks so much! I added them all 🙃 @JoScho @Birdsong28 @RachelO @silentrequiem (I‘ll ask him but that actually sounds up my alley so I‘m totally going to check them out) @SitsWithaBook 6y
aroc Anything read by RC Bray! He is an amazing performer. My hubby (who now loves audiobooks but not a big reader) got me loving this series in the audio format. We listened to the last three together while painting the house or road trips! 6y
Bookzombie While I don‘t know if this fits the thriller category, this series is full of action and edge of your seat stuff. They are a little out there with crazy science and a secret military group saving the world, but the narrator, Ray Porter, is so good. (edited) 6y

It‘s been a busy year for me, which means a lot of rereading and a lot of backlist books. I‘m a slump and want to change things up for 2019.
1. What‘s the best book you read this year?
2. Where do y‘all go to find new releases?
Love you lots, littens.

Librarybelle Best book is hard...I liked so many books! But, fiction wise, enjoyed Eleanor Oliphant and The Ashford Affair. Nonfiction, I liked Daughters of the Winter Queen and Fascism: A Warning. NetGalley always has upcoming titles listed. You can also check out Amazon‘s new releases or upcoming releases. Littens also do well talking about upcoming releases - I find out about books all the time here! 6y
Elizabeth2 Best book I read this year was A Man Called Ove. I subscribed to Book Riot emails, and get Amazon and Barnes & Noble book emails, as well. All three keep me in the loop on new releases (when I have time to check those emails). Litsy is another great resource for new release info or simply getting out of a slump. Check out what those in your feed are reading and loving. Here‘s hoping your slump ends soon! 6y
Chrissyreadit I loved Station Eleven. Last years best book still deserves a shout-out too- Homegoing, 6y
Hestapleton @Chrissyreadit yes I loved station 11!! 6y
sprainedbrain The best I‘ve read so far is still The Heart‘s Invisible Furies. I find most of my new releases on Goodreads or here on Litsy. ❤️ 6y

#recommendsday request: between the current news cycle and personal tragedy, I've had a hard time concentrating on reading this past week. If anyone could recommend me something light and feel-good to read, I'd be most obliged. Thank you!

hlgreenfield I'm sorry you are having a hard time lately! Hope you feel better ☺️ as for light reads, my comfort reads are usually re-reading Harry potter or Jane Austen so I may not be very helpful! 6y
Ye_Mighty_Andy_Spare Sorry to hear. I always turn to Jeeves and Wooster when I want to take a break from the world with something easy and fun to read. If you're unfamiliar with them, you can dive in anywhere, but The World of Jeeves is a collection of short stories if you want to dip your toe in the water and see if you like it (edited) 6y

BibliOphelia Sorry to hear. I‘m much in the same boat and so listening to Northanger Abbey on audio. Recently finished the tagged book, which was a light distraction. Good luck! 6y
saresmoore So sorry, friend. I‘m terrible at recommending light reads, but I really enjoyed this silly gem. 6y
CatLass007 Sorry to hear... I recommend the first in the Phryne Fisher Mysteries 6y
CatLass007 Beautiful kitty. 6y
2BR02B @DivineDiana yes, it was a really fun read! 6y
2BR02B @Ye_Mighty_Andy_Spare I think I actually have My Man Jeeves on my kindle. Perhaps I'll give it a shot. Thanks! 6y
2BR02B @BibliOphelia I read that one a couple of years ago. Almost wish I had saved it now, as you're right, it was a fun distraction. 6y
2BR02B @saresmoore that sounds delightful. Stacking! 6y
2BR02B @CatLass007 I have the audiobook for Cocaine Blues. I'll give it a listen. Thanks! 6y
DaveNeufeld Sadly it‘s still 3 weeks out, but it‘s the memoir you‘ve been waiting your whole life for, if I‘m not mistaken 😂 6y
CatLass007 You‘re welcome. 6y
readordierachel Sorry to hear things have been tough. This just came out and from the little bit I've read, is delightful 6y
Reggie John and Hazel‘s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren. It‘s hilarious and nice, and has a happy ending. 6y
2BR02B @DaveNeufeld 😂😂 I can't wait to never read that! 6y
2BR02B @readordierachel looks like fun. Do I need to read the prequel first? 6y
readordierachel I don't think you absolutely need to, but the main character is introduced there, so it wouldn't hurt if you're so inclined. The first one is delightful too. 6y
2BR02B @Reggie looks right up my alley. Stacked! 👍 6y
Mollyanna Sorry to hear that things are not great right now! Sending positive thoughts. I would say anything by Christopher Moore! He cracks me up every time. Or for a go get‘em gal with attitude 6y
Velvetfur Lots of love and healing vibes to you, I hope things start to improve for you soon xxx I would suggest 'Roccoco' by Adriana Triggiani, as it's such a cute little feel-good story, she writes characters so well and with humour too 😊 6y
2BR02B @Mollyanna I've already read all the Parasol Protectorate books, but diving into her YA series (Finishing School, I believe?) might be fun. 6y
Mollyanna I‘ve heard great things about the YA series! Hope it helps. 6y
2BR02B @Velvetfur thank you! ❤ I've never read anything by Adriana Trigiani, but that sounds interesting. 6y
2BR02B @Dragon I liked The Rosie Project a lot! Do you know if the sequel is as good? 6y
Crazeedi @Velvetfur @2BR02B I love Adrianna ! (edited) 6y
Linsy I‘m a bit late, but if you haven‘t tried Where‘d You Go Bernadette? or The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry, both of those books lifted my spirits. The first in a more overtly hilarious way and the second in a feel-good way. Hope you find a book that helps! 6y

This is my first set of recommendations from Book Riot‘s TBR service (you pay for recommendations or you can pay for recommendations + physical books) and they did a great job. One book was already on my TBR, but the other two I had not heard of. And the recommendations actually felt personalized so all in all, I‘m impressed! Not making any money off this, just thought y‘all might be curious too.

Okay listen, not just any book. But a free or VERY low cost but also VERY good book. I enjoy true crime, supernatural, thrillers, police procedurals, jack the ripper, hh holmes, and wonderland. I've been laid off so I cant affird the hour drive to the library or buying expensive books... So I turn to you, fellow amazing littens, with a plea for something good and free that I'd enjoy while waiting to hear back about job applications.

JoScho It is short but cheap on kindle. I enjoyed it 6y

JamieLou She-Hulk Diaries is so underrated! It‘s my favorite “feel good” read. 6y
Beatlefan129 I‘m not usually a fan of sports books, but this is a true story that is so inspirational. It kept me at the edge of my seat too, which is saying a lot for a book about rowing. 6y
jb72 To recommend just one?!?! 🤔 maybe Annie Freeman‘s Fabulous Traveling Funeral. Good book about friendship. 6y
CaroPi Depends... I will go for none fiction this time. But it needs to be the hardcover 6y
hilded This is one of my favourite books, it is so beautiful 🖤 6y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I really enjoyed this one. Kind of zany but not ridiculous and takes you over to some places in Europe you don't anyways visit in contemporary novels. 6y
amb One of three depending on the person, sir #jb crew I'm a broken record: The Devil in the White City; And Then There Were None or Flowers for Algernon 6y

I NEED YOUR HELP:

I‘m looking for recommendations for books that make you happy; preferably gentle books as opposed to ones that are witty or funny.

I‘m currently reading The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead. It‘s amazing, but I think I need to set it aside for a short time for something lighter because I‘m struggling with anxiety. I realise being able to do this is part of privilege but I need to take care of myself.

Thank you. ❤️

rachelm I really enjoy John Scalzi's sci fi for that, if you're into funny sci fi. If not funny, then maybe a heartwarming book? I liked (edited) 7y
Tamra This made me very happy and was totally taken by surprise because it isn‘t at all in my wheelhouse. 7y
tracycatherinereads I really loved The Chilbury Ladies Choir. It was my favorite read of last year. All the feels, but so many happy ones. 7y

VanChocStrawberry I just finished the one tagged and highly recommend it. There is definitely some sadness, but it‘s also gentle. 7y
batsy Great rec, @Tamra ! Or this one if you haven't read it yet 7y
CouronneDhiver I don‘t do “light and fluffy” too often, but I‘ve enjoyed 7y
Tamra @batsy Charing is high on my TBR list! 7y
AlaMich If you do audiobooks, several by Christopher Moore are hilarious, IMO, all read by Euan Morton. Fool and Serpent of Venice I have listened to; Sacre Bleu I have been saving for an emergency 😬 7y
mrozzz Do you like YA? 7y
BookishMe Fast, easy and happy reading 7y
BookishMe All the bookish love in 7y
BookishMe Guernsey, A J Fikry, Charing Cross are my happy books too but *spoiler* they have brought tears too 7y
DGRachel I tend to turn to Jane Austen when I need something easy and heartwarming. Persuasion is my favorite. 7y
SpiderGoddess I strongly recommend, the above totally. Sooooo lovely! 7y
Itchyfeetreader I binged the st marys chronicles last yea in the midst of some more serious reading. A bit wacky but easy reading and lots of fun. I also typically re read childhood classics when a bit down Anne of Green gables and little women are annual re reads. 7y
bobregina Nicholas Sparks‘ books always make me feel good in the end! 7y
Lcsmcat Any of the Crosswicks Journal books by Madeleine L‘Engle. 7y
anneofgreentables Alexander McCall Smith‘s books are some of the most gentle (and enjoyable) books I‘ve read, and he‘s written a lot of them. My personal favorite is the 44 Scotland Street series. 7y
Libby1 @Tamra , @tracylovesbooks - I have read and enjoyed both of those books. Thanks so much for the recommendation! I‘m feeling much better now. 7y

I have never read any Robin Hobb. This needs to change. Please can a kind Litten give me a recommended reading order (doesn't have to be 'official' or chronological). Thank you in advance my lovelies.

Spud If you love #fantasy you will love the world that #RobinHobb has created. I would strongly advise reading these in the intended order as the author hides little clues along the way which are easier to spot if reading them in chronological order 😀. Therefore I suggest starting with #AssassinsApprentice #RoyalAssassin then #AssassinsQuest. Look forward to your reviews 😊 7y

10.The Pirate Who Drank Tea, combining my love of POTC pirates and Jane Austen!

beccaeve I love the memoir title! 7y
CrowCAH @beccaeve lol thanks, thought it was a good one, too; since pirates don't drink tea, but rum! 7y

#recommend recommendation #helpme

LectricSheep Have you read The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet? So uplifting but also thought-provoking! 😊 8y
Iindseyo Oooh, how about The Rook? Woman who works at what's basically the Ministry of Magic has her memories wiped and has to follow clues she left herself in the past to figure out what happened to her while not arousing suspicion. Fun fantasy that's great on audio! 8y

#AprilBookShowers #AprilTBR

Top row is books / series I'm in the middle of and really need to kick my butt on reading.

Middle row is the remaining #Booktopia books I have to read (with extra Peter Heller as bonus).

Bottom row is just books I'd like to get to soon.

Also have to kick my butt back into #HPChapteraDay.

Gonna be a busy month!

Loretta @MrBook @Desha @Reviewsbylola @jessica @Scurvygirl @Bookchipmunk And yet 3 of the books I've read this year are from the library. This is why the TBR never ends! 8y

Trying to decide on a book journal for next year, thought maybe I'd try something different than my usual notebook. Plus the lists are awesome. I'm leaning towards Read, Remember, Recommend. The others are smaller and would fit in my bag, but I like the layout of this one the best.

LauraBeth This looks cute 8y
CocoReads It has a great layout. Different sections for book lists, tbr, journaling, recommendations, loaner lists, references and resources 8y
christineandbooks Oooh, on the hunt for a new reading journal. I will have to check this out... 8y
Songsofhome I'm closing my eyes on this one. I really can't have any more journals! 🙈📚 8y
CocoReads @Songsofhome I know. They all looked so good! And I know I'll use them eventually. But it was hard not getting them all. 8y
