Gone with the Wind
Gone with the Wind | Margareth Mitchell
Gone with the Wind is a novel written by Margaret Mitchell, 1st published in 1936. The story is set in Clayton County, GA, & Atlanta during the American Civil War & Reconstruction era. A historical novel, the story is a Bildungsroman or coming-of-age story, with the title taken from a poem written by Ernest Dowson. This whole book is a pro slavery and anti people of color propaganda! This depicts slaves being happy, inhuman and deserving of punishment. My mom is an accountant for a library, and she heard this book was a donation and said that the book was shredded and rightfully so.

This book is really hard to review. There‘s no doubt Margaret Mitchell is a phenomenal author, but the racism in this book was hard to take. Scarlet O‘Hara was a very memorable character despite her many, many flaws, and I thought the ending was perfect. #ChunksterChallenge2023

5feet.of.fury I agree with your take. I do like that book and think the storytelling is epic & Scarlet‘s “I can‘t think about it now, if I do I‘ll go crazy. I‘ll think about it later when I can deal with it” resonates with me on a deep level. But ..romanticizing that particular time period is 😬 and the perspective of “look how much these white slave owners suffered”😬😬 (edited) 2y

#Aphabetgame I read this book when I was 18 after I had watched the movie. And while the story of the indomitable Scarlett and Rhett Butler is absorbing it is also very underrated as an anti war book. Also add to that list of underrated anti war books is Captain Correllis mandolin.

#BookReport - The windowsill has remained mostly static this week. I always forget how nice weather cuts into reading time!! I've had so many outside projects underway, but things are starting to come together. I've included a picture of the side garden so you can see where my reading time has really been spent!! I checked off two of my chapter-a-day(ish) reads this week (bottom picture), but only one windowsill book, although I'm almost ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) halfway through Cress. Gone With the Wind continues to ruin my life with its absurdly long chapters, obnoxious Scarlet, and overall completely depressing story. But Scarlet isn't the only one who can grit her teeth and be stubborn, and I'm determined to finish this one, even if I hate it all the way! In contrast, I'm thoroughly enjoying the Jane Austen book, Treasure Island, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall (surprisingly!), and #DraculaDaily.⬇ 3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) The Ottomans is a bit of a struggle but it is quite interesting even if it is a bit dense. I've been reading it at breakfast, though, so maybe that's the problem! 😂

Only one week until vacation - gotta decide which of these books are coming with me when we head north!!

@Cinfhen
3y
MoonWitch94 Where are you vacationing? It‘s so hard to choose which ones make the cut. It‘s my biggest packing issue 😂 3y

marleed Your garden is gorgeous! 3y
Ruthiella Your side garden is lovely! 😍 It‘s been a couple of decades since I read GwtW but I do remember being mostly exasperated by Scarlet, but then every so often she‘d redeem herself with her grit and gumption. 3y
JackOBotts Your garden is lovely! 💜 3y
wordslinger42 Oh gosh, this does not encourage me to conquer Gone With the Wind 😂😂😂 3y
Bookwormjillk Beautiful garden! We‘ve had rain every weekend but eventually I will get to mine! 3y
Suet624 How sweet your side yard is. 3y
Cinfhen I LOVE your side garden 🤩🤩🤩I‘d love to see more garden shots 🥰maybe it‘s time you remove Scarlett from the window 😂vacation time- yay!!!! Enjoy 3y
TheAromaofBooks @MoonWitch94 - We are off to Michigan's Upper Peninsula!! Neither of us has been there before and I'm excited about seeing Lake Superior. Anticipating chilly/possibly damp weather, but that just means more reading time 😂 I have definitely been known to load up a milk crate of books to take on vacation before. The paranoia of running out of reading material is REAL!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @marleed @JackOBotts @Suet624 - Thank you!!! It's a lot of work but so lovely to enjoy. The tall shrubs are hibiscus with double blossoms and look absolutely GORGEOUS when they are in bloom!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Ruthiella - I do have a reluctant admiration for Scarlet who really does get stuff done no matter what it takes. But since she is literally the most selfish person I've ever read as MC, it makes it difficult to like her - literally everything she does is to protect herself, even caring for other people traces back to what they give her. She's ruthlessly practical and does literally whatever it takes to keep things going, but... not very likable😂 3y
TheAromaofBooks @wordslinger42 - So many people love this one, but I've found it rather depressing (considering the background), not even remotely romantic, & Scarlet, while full of grit, determination, & bulldogged endurance, is incredibly self-absorbed and not someone I find particularly likable. It's still really interesting from a historical perspective of both the story itself and the time it was written, so it's worthwhile to me... but not one I'll reread😂 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - You know I'm usually about bailing on books that aren't working, but I really do want to finish this classic. It's very interesting from a historical perspective, even if Scarlet makes me so mad sometimes!!! The side garden is coming along very happily. We got the ponds cleaned out today so the fish and frogs (we bought the fish & then they multiplied; the frogs brought themselves haha) are pleased. I love watching them swim around!! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - We have had SO MUCH RAIN in April!!! This week was the first time we've had more than two consecutive days without rain in I can't remember how long! Hopefully you can get out in the garden soon. It's been honestly delightful to get my hands in some dirt this week!!! 3y
MoonWitch94 @TheAromaofBooks Have a fantastic trip!!! That sounds lovely. I bring a bag of books with me on every vacation (even if I‘m flying)! It‘s my thing. And then I buy one somewhere along my way, too. #bookwormproblems 3y
TheAromaofBooks @MoonWitch94 - Yes!! I love buying at least one book on every trip. It's so fun to have a “useful“ memento!! 3y
CindyMyLifeIsLit Your side garden is beautiful—what a lovely reading spot! I hope you find some enjoyment in GWtW. It‘s one of my favorites, partly because Scarlett was my first ever unlikeable but interesting protagonist. It looks like Cary Elwes‘s As You Wish is checked off! Did you finish it? How did you like it? We use Princess Bride to teach archetypes and I love telling the kids the “behind-the-scenes” stories! 😁 3y
TheAromaofBooks @CindyMyLifeIsLit - I do have a reluctant admiration for Scarlet, but it doesn't keep me from wanting to shake her half the time 😂 I absolutely loved As You Wish, it was just so warm and friendly. I would have loved more details and more stories, but thoroughly enjoyed what was there - already passed it on to my parents who are also huge fans of the movie!! 3y

1-14 July 2021 (audiobook)
I watched the movie so often in my childhood and teens and, as a hopeless romantic, wished for an alternate ending. I also read the book and the sequel, Scarlett, which even as a teen I knew was not great but was willing to forgive to see Rhett and Scarlett together.
Reading today, I was shocked by the depiction of the klan and the relentless racism. ⬇️

mjtwo Yes, I still gave it a pick - honestly I love the character development, the depiction of the fall of a civilisation and Rhett - but it does make me very uncomfortable and there were a number of parts that were difficult to read. How should books from earlier eras be judged? Can they still be enjoyed when they depict a view of history that is so biased and offensive, and certainly not aligned with my values and beliefs? I am not sure. (edited) 3y

This book was a sweet torture, at one minute you are completely thrown off course by the startling intensity of the passion described, and the next you are made to shamefully submit your desire for more by the painful shunning out through raw practicality of life. I was simultaneously crying, shouting, happy, frustrated and all the more perplexed by how the events in the story unfolded. It definitely took a heavy toll on my heart 💔

A true American classic, Gone With The Wind truly does live up to its reputation. It is a magnificent, page-turner of a book, and although quite a long book, kept me interested from the very 1st page. With the backdrop of the American Civil War and the years of recovery, the glorious Scarlett, this story's heroine, is not a conventional southern lady, as she overcomes many trials and tribulations with what can only be described as true "grit".

Freespirit It‘s a wonderful story! 4y

I‘ve never actually seen all of the film, just snatches back pre DVD and video days, when my mother watched it on TV when it was shown annually...I have read the book and while Mitchell was an apologist for the South and racist, the story is worth reading, if the reader is willing to take that baggage on board. And it has an excellent doomed #lovetriangle.
