The Passenger
The Passenger | Lisa Lutz
Lutz develops riveting suspense by slowly revealing the events that first sent Tanya/Amelia on the run, while pouring threats on her gritty heroines increasingly tenuous bids at survival. Binge-worthy fare, especially for those drawn to strong female protagonists (Booklist, starred review). From the author of the New York Times bestselling Spellman Files series, Lisa Lutzs latest blistering thriller is about a woman who creates and sheds new identities as she crisscrosses the country to escape her past: youll want to buckle up for the ride!In case you were wondering, I didnt do it. I didnt have anything to do with Franks death. I dont have an alibi, so youll have to take my word for it... Forty-eight hours after leaving her husbands body at the base of the stairs, Tanya Dubois cashes in her credit cards, dyes her hair brown, demands a new name from a shadowy voice over the phone, and flees town. Its not the first time. She meets Blue, a female bartender who recognizes the hunted look in a fugitives eyes and offers her a place to stay. With dwindling choices, Tanya-now-Amelia accepts. An uneasy?and dangerous?alliance is born. Its almost impossible to live off the grid today, but Amelia-now-Debra and Blue have the courage, the ingenuity, and the desperation, to try. Hopscotching from city to city, Debra especially is chased by a very dark secretcan she outrun her past? With heart-stopping escapes and devious deceptions, The Passenger is an amazing psychological thriller about defining yourself while you pursue your path to survival. One thing is certain: the ride will leave you breathless.

This an especially good twisty thriller by Lisa Lutz. I enjoy most all of her books.

Between a Pick and a So-So.
In the beginning, this felt aimless like it lacked direction...rushed even. I couldn‘t get a feel for this character at all. Eventually, when she slows down for a minute it did get better. Overall there are aspects that were interesting and others that were kind of meh.

This is the story of a woman who creates and sheds new identities as she crisscrosses the country to escape her past. From heart-stopping escapes and devious deceptions, we are left to wonder…can she possibly outrun her past? One thing for sure; the ride will leave you breathless. This is a psychological suspense that will keep you turning the pages. This is my first Lisa Lutz book but won't be my last. Highly enjoyable book. Recommended.

This one is hard to rate, because a part of me wants to like it, but the other part is like... why tho? There was a pretty big plot hole toward the end, it felt very rushed like the author was sick of writing it.

I realize that for fiction, one must suspend belief, but in certain types of fiction that becomes hard to do. This is one of those books. Too many plot holes and odd ball things happening with little to no explanation.

I enjoyed this one. I don‘t want to say too much and spoil it for my #lmpbc group. I thought it was a unique story with a good ending. Parts of it I didn‘t love, but overall, I liked this book. Thank you for sharing. Will be sending out tomorrow with a bookish goodie. Sorry I didn‘t get to send something extra last time. Things got crazy with me not being well!

Detailed at first, but by about page 100 there was no putting the book down. I became engaged in the flawed protagonist.

Although there are one too many name changes creating confusion; and a few belief defying police stops, Lutz manages to tie everything together in the end. The gotcha moment at the end was predictable but the story ends with a relatively satisfying conclusion. The author succeeded in keeping me engaged. I do recommend it.

I‘m not really sure how I feel about this book. I wanted to stop reading several times, but wanted to know what happened to the MC in the end.

The MC has been on the run for 10 years, and we only find out why in the end. She‘s adopted multiple identities, just trying to survive. She meets the mysterious Blue, who upends her life even more.

If you‘re OK with dark stories about people trying to survive, you might like it.

“When I found my husband at the bottom of the stairs, I tried to resuscitate him before I ever considered disposing of the body.”

I generally like Lisa Lutz‘s books because they‘re funny and a little twisted. This one feels different, darker. Darker than “The Swallows,” which had absurdity to lighten it a little. Maybe it gets lighter after page 58. I need something that‘s not dark and heavy right now.

I read this in August 2019 and was bowled over by it. It starts like the narrative of a homicidal femme fatale but turns out to be surprisingly not what it seems. It slows down a lot in the middle but that fits the theme, which is partly about the tedium of being on the run. My attention was caught by a review of The Swallows, but The Passenger was cheaper

Exceedingly implausible but a very fun ride! Lots of twists and turns-she‘s running from the law but you don‘t know why. You do have to suspend disbelief quite a bit which is normally a deal breaker for me but I enjoyed it and was able to go with the flow. This has been on my TBR for a LONG time. So glad I finally got around to it. 🚗🚓🧩😀

TerriGreen Glad you liked this one. I added this one to my Goodreads TBR back in 2016. I was really close to picking this one for my next audiobook. 5y

Despite my rants about the audiobook reader in my previous post, I really enjoyed this book. It kept me wondering what was going to happen next and the characters were borderline shady enough for me to not know whether they were good guys or bad guys (main character included).

I‘m enjoying the tagged book, but the audiobook reader is driving me nuts. Her inflections for male voices are awful and they all sound like they‘re talking in slow motion.
Has anyone ever given up on an audiobook because the reader was so bad? 🙄

Maude Yes, I often have to quit audiobooks because the reader bothers me, bad reading has made me dislike a book, that I later read myself and really liked. 5y

⭐⭐⭐⭐The Passenger is about a young woman who found her husband at the bottom of the stairs dead. She claims she did not do it, but she flees anyways so the blame is not put on her. I gave this book four stars because it had many twists and turns, but it did not fully give me a five star feel. I enjoyed this book and I actually really liked the character because she was morally grey which is my favorite aspect for a character.

This book was...different. It made me feel weird emotions and I was uncomfortable quite a bit while reading it. Typically, I love that type of novel but I just can‘t describe why this book didn‘t sit right with me. I did really like the structure of the book and how it was broken up into many parts. The ending brought me some clarity and helped me appreciate the main character a little more. Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️/ 5

This book was just ok for me. I felt like the ending was underwhelming and really didn‘t tie everything together as well as I hoped. A few things i thought were not addressed and just forgotten about also. The book jacket suggests the pace is comparable to Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train...mmmm no it‘s not.

This was between so-so and a pan for me. From the very beginning I wasn‘t a fan of the main character, and I didn‘t always think her rationale/the things she did made sense. The plot was weird how it worked backwards, but the way it was setup made feel like I was seriously missing something. It wasn‘t what I thought it would be and the final “reveal” at the end left a bad taste in my mouth.

This one was average at best. If my book club hadn‘t picked it I probably wouldn‘t have finished it. It‘s basically the exact same premise as the backstory of Kate on LOST. Woman on the run with a dark secret. Unfortunately it felt repetitive and the big reveal wasn‘t great.
