The mysteries of Udolpho
The mysteries of Udolpho | Ann Ward Radcliffe, Bonamy Dobrιe
Trapped in a gloomy medieval fortress, an orphaned heroine battles the devious schemes of her guardians as well as her own pensive visions and melancholy fancies. Generations of readers have thrilled to this famous Gothic tale from 1794 and its hypnotic pre-Freudian exploration of the psyche.

I'm currently participating in the final #hashtagbrigade #buddyread of the year. 10ish chapters left, and I just don't care anymore. I've never read a book with more loose ends, dead ends, and 'we won't talk about that' plot devices in my life. Thank goodness for @BarkingMadRead keeping us sane and the humour flowing. Otherwise, I would have bailed around chapter 10!
FYI, I got bored and did a word count. πŸ™„πŸ˜…

dabbe I managed to get through THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV thanks to this group and @BarkingMadRead's hilarious posts and @Aimeesue's hysterical dioramas, but this one? I bailed at Book 2. And I had also tried to read it a few years ago. I just couldn't do it. Again. Writing that goes on and on an on and on with tears all over the place and too many descriptions and meandering everywhere ... bleh! I'll be up for the January read, though! 🀩 15h
mcctrish @dabbe The Bros was better ( never thought I‘d say that ) 15h

TheAromaofBooks I gotta be honest, I freaking love Annette and her complete inability to keep a secret πŸ˜‚ 3d
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks without Annette, we wouldn‘t know a damn thing 🀣 3d
Clare-Dragonfly There doesn‘t seem to be much acknowledgement that Annette‘s husband has disappeared! 3d
Clare-Dragonfly Linguistic note: I see that Annette has switched from calling Emily β€œmamselle” to β€œmadam”! This matches up with something I noted in the book I just finishedβ€”in English, Mrs was for a long time just a title of respect for an adult woman of a certain class, even if she wasn‘t married. The Mrs versus Miss for marital status distinction wasn‘t solidified until the mid-19th century. Emily is probably Madam now that she‘s inherited. (edited) 3d

julieclair I‘m proud of her for kicking V to the curb. I didn‘t think she had it in her. 2w

mcctrish What just happened? V admits to the debts he could never repay and that he isn‘t worthy of Emily AND is mad that she doesn‘t want to shackle herself to him?! He questions how long the count has been her friend? Meanwhile E has spent about 32 minutes in his actual company and expects her to marry him after whoring and gambling ? RUN AWAY EMILY 2w
Bklover @mcctrish yes! When I think of all the weeping and fainting over V it makes me want to scream. You are right- she doesn‘t even really know him! 2w
mcctrish It‘s nice she had him to focus on while at Udolpho but cut him loose now 2w
Bookwormjillk At first I was kind of on V's side because yeah she just met this Count guy. But then he admitted to it all so bye V. And what is the story of the picture? 2w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk everyone is crying πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ 2w
Bookwormjillk @BarkingMadRead I meant the one that Emily's dad had that Dorethee was refusing to talk about. She is just not coming back? 2w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk ohhhhhhhh that picture! We may never know…. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly V keeps going β€œI‘m terrible and it‘s exactly like the Count says” except no one actually lays out what Emily or V is thinking. I‘d put money on V‘s actual actions not being as bad as what Emily thinks. Of course, I don‘t know whether he‘ll actually TELL HER that before they both die of old age! 2w

Bookwormjillk @AllDebooks yes I actually can that‘s why I was worried πŸ˜‚ 2w
Clare-Dragonfly I‘m relieved that we made it back to this castle. I spent like 14 chapters wondering when Emily was going to figure out that Udolpho was the creepy castle she saw before. Then I realized it was in Italy so it must be a different castle, and I wondered why they spent so much time being aware of that creepy castle! Clare-Dragonfly I was just thinking this couldn‘t possibly be set up by Macaroni because he doesn‘t need to be this subtle when he can just threaten her. And I was proven right! mcctrish Everything is so halfassed in this story! Nobody ever gets the whole story out, nobody reads the papers before burning, describes what‘s in the frame, figures out who‘s been left for dead, actually kills the person they want dead! I‘m just supposed to be happy there were no tears 4w

Bookwormjillk Long line to poison that dude. Also did I miss why she‘s so determined to find Auntie? Auntie doesn‘t like her except for that one sort of compliment that one time. 4w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I have no idea, if I were Emily, I‘d be trying to escape. Forget auntie. 4w
AllDebooks Radcliffe is overly fond of the word 'wither'. There has been an awful lot of withering lately 4w
TheAromaofBooks I honestly kind of admired Emily in this chapter - she's completely terrified but still determined to find her aunt and make sure she's okay. And she seems to be fainting more than crying; haven't decided whether or not that's an improvement πŸ˜‚ 4w
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks I know, like what‘s worse? The fainting or the crying? At least the fainting takes less time πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ 4w

mcctrish I realized at the start of my reading today we are only 43% through this nonsense and I could cry. And then we get a short chapter which I should be thrilled about, except we‘ve been reading for 100 years and nothing but crying has happened except V, after moping around in Emily‘s absence has moved to Paris to become a club kid 🀯 #wherethefuckisthisgoing (edited) 1mo
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish 🀣🀣🀣 this is scarily accurate 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t like the short chapters! I am updating my reading percentage daily in Storygraph and when the percentage stays the same Storygraph thinks I haven‘t read any of this book 🀣 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly So V hung around until his regiment couldn‘t do without him anymore. And since they needed him so badly he… made social connections and started a gambling habit? 🀨 1mo

#Two4Tuesday is my fav question, thanks @TheSpineView

1/ I tend to plan ahead what I read, one of my favourite things is lining up future reads.

2/ I'm going to go for the #currentread for #hashtagbrigade, this one didn't go to plan, it took me 5 months to read and I was sure when I finished I'd think never again but no, it's left an impression and I would definitely read again, next time I'm hoping it doesn't take this long.

mcctrish This. Was. Bonkers. Also does Ann use up all her words describing the scenery and has none left over for the actual stuff? And by stuff I mean papers that get burned and portraits that make you faint 1mo
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish for real though! 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly This was such a long chapter but at least stuff happened? Very annoyed that we don‘t get to see what‘s behind the curtain. My money is on a dead body. ☠️ 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I would love it if it was a dead body, we need some action. 1mo

1. I love to plan and make lists. Actually performing the lists, though ... well, that's another story entirely. πŸ˜‚

Clare-Dragonfly I just realized I got his name wrong in a completely different way πŸ˜‚ Montoni! 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Also! Doesn‘t Valancourt have a first name? He calls Emily by her name all the time but she doesn‘t use his name in dialogue. Did Radcliffe just not feel like coming up with a first name? 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t think they‘ve mentioned a first name? I‘m not sure! 1mo
dabbe This is the perfect kind of book for me right now. No matter how bad things are or seem to be today, I am quite grateful to not be Emily in the late 1500's with absolutely no money and no say in what she can/can't do in her life. #yikes #andyesshecrieswaytoomuch #scmb 1mo
