KAO While reading this chapter, I felt a bizarre reminder of the rich patriarch of the family visiting the White Lotus resort in the latest season of this show—about how he received news that his fortune had been lost and he didn‘t want to tell his privileged family and about how tortured he was by the sheer anticipation of financial ruin… Yes, I confess having watched the whole series! 3d
BarkingMadRead @kao I just started season 1, I can‘t wait to watch all the seasons! 3d
KAO @BarkingMadRead The show is SO bizarre, but I couldn‘t resist some unique storytelling! 3d
mcctrish Truthfully I can‘t even remember what the suit was for but the fact #tetchytully owed money to so many people I‘m not sure how his plan was ever going to be more than a dream. I haven‘t watched this season of WL yet, it‘s such a bonkers show ❤️❤️❤️ 3d
ElizaMarie Oooo White Lotus! So messed up! It‘s this slow burn to chaos! “Pipper Noooo!!!” 3d
julieclair #tetchytully ‘s “always going to law” and robbing Peter to pay Paul is catching up with him big time. 3d
Clare-Dragonfly It‘s sad and all but I found it hilarious how #tetchytully hates Wakem so much that he had a (possibly literal) stroke on learning that he owes him money! (edited) 3d

dabbe I just despise the derogatory terms used against poor Phil and his back. I know those were the words, but still ... in the #ShardlakeBR series, the lawyer, Shardlake, calls himself a hunchback as does pretty much everyone else--even Henry VIII in an extremely volatile way. #peoplecanbesocruel 1w

Clare-Dragonfly I hope they become friends and Philip helps Tom with his Latin and drawing! I like Philip, but that‘s probably because I was a shy, bookish kid like him… and because him having a hunch due to a childhood accident makes me think of Mr Benson, the minister from (edited) 1w

TheAromaofBooks This is actually interesting to read after Lark Rise to Candleford. I feel like a lot of the things we read about in that book as generalities are happening in this story. 2w
mcctrish @TheAromaofBooks this is the story that goes with Lark Rise‘s accounting lists. Also I‘m some mad at Glegg calling in her money and poor sister Tulliver living in squalor has to figure out some way to magic cost savings out of thin air 2w
julieclair I never could get into Lark Rise… but I‘m liking this book. I keep hoping I‘ll someday finish Lark Rise, but I must admit that hearing that it contains accounting lists is not motivating me, @mcctrish ! 😂 2w
ElizaMarie I‘m glad Tully had a change of heart and not insisted to call in the debt. 8 kids and no money - there is no way sis could have survived - unless she sold the kiddos 2w
Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish I don‘t think Glegg did call in her money. Tulliver is just being excessively proud and trying to pay her back before she does 🙄 2w
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly that‘s the impression I got as well, I was surprised he was going to that much effort 2w
mcctrish @julieclair it just felt like an accounting list 🤣 2w
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly I thought I‘d missed something with the calling in - so he was just over reacting to his wife talking about it. Thank goodness he didn‘t crush his sister and family #oldladywholivesinashoe 2w
Leftcoastzen I think he has his pride & would like to pay her off . So maybe he could tell her off !😁 Tully saw how tight it was for his sister with all those mouths to feed and couldn‘t do it . Bookwormjillk Some things never change though with the drama about meal times and people refusing to just have a snack for goodness sakes. Or maybe that‘s just my family. 2w
mcctrish Mrs Tulliver hurt her sister‘s feeling wearing her own hair aka Glegg who‘s got her third best fake hair on cuz it‘s a weekday 🤯 which is a wonderful lead up to berating Maggie so much she chops her own hair off just to show Glegg. 🤦🏻‍♀️ maybe she can sell Glegg her hair ? 2w
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish Glegg can suck it! She‘s the worst! 2w
mcctrish Glegg is the worst 2w

dabbe I am not liking Tom at all. So high and mighty and always wanting to exact justice! Maggie adores him yet he abuses her. All of them do, except the father seems to favor her a bit. Childhood can be so brutal. And the animal abuse? Horrific. 🤬 3w
mcctrish This chapter just had me mad, Mr Tulliver telling Mrs Tulliver to invite them all and she‘s like “the work of it, more food to make, leaves for the table, dishes to get out” and no one‘s helping her and none of them get along as he puts on his hat and strides off 3w
rubyslippersreads If there‘s animal abuse (especially cats), I think it was the right choice for me to skip this. 😼 3w
ElizaMarie I hated Tom with his little mind games with his sister here. She adores him. And did everything she thought she could to make him happy - offered him the better piece and everything! Ugh! He is mean. 3w
TheAromaofBooks Honestly both Tom and Maggie scare me in their own ways 😂 3w
Morr_Books I am weirded out by the conversations between Maggie and Tom. It seems more like a marriage than a sibling relationship. 3w
Morr_Books A lot of serial killer tendencies (killing of animals, etc.) with some of these characters. Not at all what I was expecting from this book. 3w

Bookwormjillk I don‘t think he was wrong though about the rabbits? Oh well. 3w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk definitely not wrong! 3w
See All 15 Comments
dabbe I worry about Maggie. She ignores the rabbits and lets them starve to death and takes out her aggressions by stabbing a doll voodoo-style while in the attic. This can not bode well for her psyche. And Tom loving-hating her within minutes. Granted, what she did to the rabbits was awful, but still. 3w
Bklover @Bookwormjillk @dabbe You‘re right about the rabbits. I‘m even mad at her for that! But I hate all of this “I won‘t love you anymore”. Even mom says it. Anyway. I just wanted to mention the last sentence of the chapter is gorgeous! It‘s the narrator speaking about childhood memories. 3w
BarkingMadRead @Bklover the writing is just beautiful! 3w
dabbe @Bklover 🤩😍🤗 3w
Morr_Books I may have an unpopular view, but I'm kinda on team Tom... for this chapter. 3w
ElizaMarie AND the mom quickly again goes to Maggie Drowned! What is with the drowning, maybe her momma lost her sister to drowning. Or do people just up and drown all the time? Is drowning the new boogieman? 3w
BarkingMadRead @ElizaMarie I really hope we get some clarity on this, I need me a good backstory! 3w
mcctrish @Morr_Books I‘m team Tom too! He asked 2 people to check on his rabbits and they both let him down 👎🏻👎🏻 and he‘s not allowed to be upset ( mom is a bit theatrical with the drowning ) 3w
Clare-Dragonfly @ElizaMarie I think it‘s just because they live close to a river, but maybe there is something… 3w
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly Oo that makes more sense than it being something more nefarious. 3w
Leftcoastzen Why doesn‘t mom just say stay away from the river ! If my mom said stay away from the river , she would have told me why , and I would have stayed away from the river ! 😁 2w
Leftcoastzen I was miffed everyone let Tom down as well , it was a simple ask , Maggie is young but should have been able to look after a couple of rabbits. The parents don‘t look after her , I know people had plenty of work in those days. 2w

dabbe And it's now the second time the mom has been afraid that Maggie has drowned. Should I be worried about this? 😬 3w
Bklover @Ruthiella Maggie is very entertaining, but I have to admit she scares me a little. I wouldn‘t want to be up in that attic with her! 😬 (edited) 3w

Clare-Dragonfly I really want Tom and Maggie to switch places like Alanna and her brother! She would be much better suited to scholarship! 3w

AllDebooks I love Maggie already ❤️ 3w
ElizaMarie I love the whole convo with the mole! “its puzzling work, talking is“. 😂 3w
dabbe This quote scares me from the mother: “Maggie, Maggie ... you'll tumble and be drowned some day, an' then you'll be sorry you didn't do as mother told you.“ 😳 3w
eeclayton As a non-native speaker, I found this chapter a bit difficult to read. I may need to switch to a translation if characters keeps speaking like this. 3w
BarkingMadRead @eeclayton the language was definitely rough. I had to read a couple lines twice! 3w
Leftcoastzen I already feel sorry for Maggie 3w
Ruthiella @eeclayton I am a native speaker and I found some of the sentences tough to parse! 3w
Clare-Dragonfly Poor Maggie, so poorly behaved that her hair won‘t even curl! 🙄😂 3w
mcctrish “I‘d be sorry for him to be a raskill ( lawyer)” 🤣🤣🤣 3w
Bklover Can you add me to the list please? 3w
Bklover @dabbe No Mother of the Year award for her!!😉😂 3w
dabbe @Bklover 🎯🤣🎯 3w
Sparklemn @Ruthiella Same! 😵‍💫 3w
Sparklemn Maggie is sassy! Love it. And her father appears to take it in stride. The mother not so much. 3w

dabbe I think “moist“ was used in different forms more than once! 🤣 I love the setup to a long flashback of what happens at Dorlcote Mill on the Floss River. No dental floss here whatsoever! 🤩 3w

Bookwormjillk I don‘t even know where to start! I don‘t think I‘ll ever get sick of reading and re-reading this one. 4w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk never ever ever. Always and forever my favorite! 4w
See All 12 Comments
PaperbackPirate I wanted to join in on this one but just didn‘t have the time. Maybe later this year! 4w
TieDyeDude I really enjoyed the graphic novel adaptation. I'm not a fan of the artist's style, but it was consistent and the characters were discernable (which isn't always the case in comics with a large cast). The overall focus was more on the Colorado crew, but it never felt rushed or lacking. I would say the biggest miss was Trashy. His story kinda dropped off after he got to Vegas, so his role in the finale felt underdeveloped. 4w
TieDyeDude I has been about 5 years since I read The Stand for the first time. I was surprised at how much came back to me as I was doing this re-read, though I mostly forgot the Vegas finale 🤷‍♂️ Maybe in another 5 years, I'll read the uncut novel 😋 Has anyone done this on audio? (edited) 4w
Bookwormjillk @TieDyeDude yes, I did it on audio this time. It works. 4w
BarkingMadRead @TieDyeDude how can they do that to poor Trashy! He‘s so important! 4w
JessClark78 I‘m only about a hundred pages in, but this is my third or fourth time reading The Stand. I‘m always amazed at how King can write so many characters in one book. 4w
kwmg40 I too am doing a reread, but I only got about a quarter of the way through before having to return it to the library. It's a gripping read but I had way too many books on the go already. I'll resume when I get the book again, and in the meantime, I'm really enjoying this more leisurely read, instead of the frantic page-turning experience last time, trying to find out what happens next. 4w
bekakins I didn‘t manage to do a reread but this is one of my favourite King novels - such great character development in this one! 4w
Roary47 I read this last year and have to say it‘s one of my favorites. 😍 3w

Bklover I feel bad for Marian. Forever the aunty. 1mo
BarbaraJean It was a bit anticlimactic! More dramatic vindication would have been nice. Or at least a hilarious dramatic deathbed scene with dear Uncle. I‘m just glad Pesca didn‘t have to kill Porkchop. 1mo
BarkingMadRead @BarbaraJean I definitely hoped for better deaths 🤣 1mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk #atleastthebadpeopledied small mercies and @BarbaraJean silver lining for Pesca 👏🏻👏🏻 1mo
Bookwormjillk @BarbaraJean good point- happy for Pesca 1mo
ElizaMarie @Bklover YES! I feel so badly for Marian. Like she was a super amazing woman, and if only she wasn't so ugly - ha! I mean, she kinda gets a happily ever after, but... only kinda? 1mo
dabbe It creeped me out how #countporkchop lusted/loved Marian. There has to be someone out there for her! But you know what? She's Wilkie's independent woman, so maybe it's fitting that she ends up happily on her own. She, Walt, and Anne were my favorites. Oh, and Pesca, too!

Thanks for another fabulous read, #hashtagbrigade and our wittiest leader, @BarkingMadRead! 🤩🙌🏻🤩
1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Heck yeah they did! I suspected that foreigner with a scar on his face might be the Brotherhood‘s vengeance but when he left the Count alone when Walt arrived at his house, I wasn‘t sure. He got the ending he deserved! 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Does anyone remember, if Laura hadn‘t managed to produce a son, would someone else have inherited Limmeridge? Or would a daughter have done the trick? Or could she have inherited in her own right? 1mo
Ruthiella @Bklover @ElizaMarie @dabbe We can all write our own ending for Marian. I see her meeting Mr. Gilmore‘ son (or nephew or daughter or niece, whatever your flavor) and starting a beautiful partnership both personally and professionally as private detectives. 1mo
Ruthiella @Clare-Dragonfly I think she would have inherited in her own right. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks I ended up loving this one!! Thanks so much for hosting @BarkingMadRead - this one was an unexpected win for me 😂 1mo

mcctrish I laughed out loud twice during #countporkchop ‘s side of the story with his insertions about how awesome he is 🤣🤣 but cringed at how much he looovvvveeddd Marian ( but it saved her so yay Marian) every time someone describes him I hear in the back of my mind “how fat was he?” like part of a running joke 1mo
Bookwormjillk Honestly I would read a whole book told from the POV of Uncle and Count. They‘re awful but so funny. And he wasn‘t wrong about Marian. 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly for real! I laughed the whole time. @mcctrish I could only use drawings of him, the actors they used were never fat enough 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
Bklover The illustration is perfect!😂😂 1mo
BarbaraJean @Bklover The illustration is absolutely perfect, in no small part because at first I interpreted the right hand as a foot and his belly as the leg attached to that “foot,“ and the ridiculousness of that pose + the ridiculousness of seeing my error had me cackling 😂 😂 Also: does he have smoke coming out of his ear?!? What is happening?! 1mo
BarkingMadRead @BarbaraJean omg I never noticed that smoke, wtf?!? 1mo

Bklover @Clare-Dragonfly Laura doesn‘t actually say a whole lot in this book, so it was definitely notable! She‘s generally too busy being fragile 😉 1mo
Bookwormjillk Porkchop‘s schedule and his description of the birds had me cracking up. 1mo
Ruthiella I read many years ago somewhere that Count Fosco was an influence on the Bond villain, Bloefeld (the one with the white cat). I see the connection. Charming but deadly. Fond of animals. 1mo
mcctrish Porkchop laughing at Walt not accepting coffee - the English always pick the wrong thing to be worried about. Yet the Italian played a long con for something Laura would have happily given her aunt - her inheritance and skipped the murder/lock up 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
ElizaMarie @BkLover I love your description of Laura #TooFragileToFunction :) I hope this #MysteryMan does something!!! (edited) 1mo

BarkingMadRead @mcctrish and casting was on point with this one 🤣 1mo
mcctrish Absolutely on point 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly It‘s a bit anticlimactic that he really is the son of Sir Felix, just illegitimate. His parents lived together as though they were married, and he was raised as the son, so really, what‘s the difference?! I agree with being impressed she saved money! (edited) 1mo
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly I agree! 1mo
dabbe I absolutely detest #snottymrsc for allowing Laura to be placed in a “private“ asylum so as to avoid any talk in public. What an absolute bitch. She saved all the $ and not once helped our #nicemrsc and Laura. Again. #absolutebitch HBC is perfect in this role. 1mo
