I think that all of the previous details about life in this hamlet enhance my appreciation for the difficulties and hard-won delights of this time period—and I can‘t help but wonder how readers 80+ years from now will read about life in the 2020s with no small amount of amusement! 1d

Cuilin I used to think that the hashtags were just fun and quirky and now I‘m so glad for the recapping because I forget what I read two hours ago. I could blame a book without a plot but I actually think it‘s me. lol 3d

AllDebooks @Cuilin no, it's me too. Lol 😅 3d
dabbe @Cuilin Nope, it's the lack of plot. I do the exact same thing. I've been skimming a lot, too. A while back one of the chapters was called “Farming“, and I just skimmed and thought “Oh, with a moo moo there, and an oink oink there ... Old McDonald had a farm ... chapter over. 🙄 3d
Bookwormjillk It‘s me too! I know I read this but all I remember is the pig 😂 3d
willaful The book did it just to prove me wrong! 😂 3d
mcctrish @dabbe I‘m laughing at that Old MacDonald reference out loud 3d

willaful Hehehe...

What on EARTH was that saying about dogs and butter? I couldn't make heads or tails of it. 😂
4d
Bookwormjillk I know I read this chapter but I can‘t remember it. Sounds like it probably doesn‘t matter. Like The Hotel last year I think this probably is better on TV. 4d
BarkingMadRead @willaful your guess is as good as mine 🤣 4d
RamsFan1963 Every time I see one of these bikes, it reminds me of the TV series The Prisoner. 4d
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk this chapter was all over the place!! 4d
dabbe This chapter was definitely a skimmer one. And I totally missed the butter saying--that was one of the paragraphs I just gave a glance to. C'mon, Flora, please give us a plot! 😂 4d
willaful @dabbe second verse, same as the first... I don't think there's a plot a'comin'! 4d
BarbaraJean @willaful @dabbe I suppose it would be odd if the second book suddenly veered into a plot with actual character development instead of random unconnected tidbits of life in Lark Rise… but a girl can dream 😆 4d
dabbe @willaful 😭😭😭 ... oops, that's for MYSTERIES OF UDOLPHO. 😂 4d

mcctrish What a bloody chapter! Party Party Party 🎉 oh and Edmund died 5d
See All 12 Comments
Cuilin I was nervous when she mentioned the Irish coming to help. Usually branded during this time (propaganda) as unreliable drunkards and agitators but no, the opposite, happy to help, work, party Saturday night and mass on Sunday. ☘️ 5d
TheAromaofBooks That last sentence! Sheesh. What a way to end the book! 5d
dabbe @Cuilin Éirinn go Brách! ☘️ 5d
Ruthiella Lots of meat and puddings. 5d
willaful @TheAromaofBooks So this was the end? My edition has the next chapter continuing the numbering so I wasn't sure.

The rather ironic view of the Queen reminded me of this song from the British series “Rock Follies“: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_GMgPo5J8Q
5d
Bookwormjillk What a buzz kill 5d
TheAromaofBooks @willaful - Yes, my edition has the three books separated, so this was the end of Lark Rise, and tomorrow we'll start Over the Candleford. 5d

Ch 14: church, this reminded me of the second episode of LHOTP where the Rev lectures the wives because the husbands stayed home 🤣 #godunderstandsfarmers #somanycustoms #notmuchchanges #poormissellison #ripmarley #hashtagbrigade

TheBookHippie Can you remove me from the lists please. Thanks. 6d

BarkingMadRead @TheBookHippie we will miss you! 6d
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead sorry too much going on here!!! If I can pop back in I‘ll let you know. 6d
TheAromaofBooks I love Laura going to the “weird“ church service just for something to do 😂 6d
mcctrish @TheAromaofBooks me too. Actually I like this book whenever Laura is mentioned, then it feels like a story and less like an accounting 6d
willaful @mcctrish Yes, that helps. 6d
Bookwormjillk @mcctrish you are so right 6d
dabbe @mcctrish Bam! That's the word for this book. It's an ACCOUNTING of every single aspect of daily life. I'm close to saying #uhCOUNTmeout! 😂 6d
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk what really funny is I did my reading at school today during silent reading time. I have this and my Sunday Buddy Read on my kindle and I decided I‘d knock my chapter off using the kindle app on my phone. But it was queued up to Grand Hotel and I was so perplexed as to where the German dancer came from and who was he backing into a corner 6d
mcctrish @dabbe I mean, it certainly is a glimpse into a day in the life but my god it‘s dry as toast 6d
TheAromaofBooks @mcctrish - It's true!! I honestly can't decide whether or not I like this book!? But I love the more personal glimpses we get with Laura's opinions/thoughts/actions vs. the overview. 5d
KAO I found it remarkable that there was a lot to say about the role of church (including the rector‘s practices outside of services) in this hamlet. Nowhere near this amount of detail was given about school! Then again, the actual church building was often located at the center of a village (or is that true only in Germany, Austria, and other European countries where I‘ve seen it so often?). I can imagine how the church was figuratively central too. 5d
KAO I do agree that my interest is sparked when I get a glimpse of Laura or Edmund‘s behaviors! Or of particular background stories on occasionally introduced characters. Poor Rev. Marley! 5d

Cuilin Poor teacher couldn‘t even enjoy a cup of tea. As an early childhood educator we learned never to attend a child‘s party out of school hours as parents would use us as babysitters or entertainers. 1w
willaful Interesting commentary on the class issues for the teachers. Kind of an extension of that for governesses I guess. I chortled at “3 ladies, 3 women, and a teacher.“ 1w
dabbe @Cuilin That would happen when Matt and I would be escorts at middle school dances. We always had to stay until every kid was picked up, and sometimes parents would come 1-2 hours later--probably because of their own so-called date night! No wonder all the teachers then went to the bar and drank. 🤩 1w

AllDebooks I was feeling sorry for them, being sent out into the world at 12. But, OMG,I bet those parents were pulling their hair out! 😱 1w
willaful This reminded me so much of Understood Betsy -- though weirdly, more the city school than Betsy's idyllic country school. Also brought to mind the Anne books, and the Little House books... it's fun to read this with a strong background in children's literature. 😁 1w
AllDebooks Best photo match, ever 😅 1w
mcctrish Glad to see nothing‘s changed #savages 🤣🤣 1w
Ruthiella This chapter reminded me of the schoolroom battle portrayed in Laura Ingalls Wilder‘s 1w
dabbe I cracked up when Miss Higgs told the class she wanted to be their friend, and the students “scented weakness ... from one whose office it was to rule.“ There's a reason why teachers don't smile until 2nd semester. 😂

My first year teaching I had an 8th grade class from hell. I literally begged them to be good and promised them an ice cream party EVERY Friday if they were. Did it work? Nope. Major lesson learned. By me. 😂
1w
KAO As a retired teacher myself, I was looking forward to this chapter! I am fascinated by accounts of school life from the past! I had a distant relative who was a teacher in a one room schoolhouse in Canada many decades ago—and man oh man, but she had stories to tell! (edited) 1w
Bookwormjillk I was kind of happy Laura wasn‘t top in her class. Nothing wrong with smart girls of course but it seems like every girl in every book ends up number one in her class. Kind of relatable to read about one who was good at some things and not at others. 1w

BarkingMadRead @willaful I think so? The only other thing I can think of would be one of these heating pans for cold nights 1w
Bookwormjillk @willaful @BarkingMadRead I was wondering too but was afraid to google 1w
Bklover I love how the younger generation quit popping out kids by the dozen! Those kids had to start working so young. 1w

Cuilin @mcctrish they Work!! I did this years aga with K - 5 and they loved them!! We had some different names but some of the same games. You can find lots of them online. I put a binder of them together for other teachers to use. I hope the school still uses it because the kids love them. It worked for a theater group too. 1w

mcctrish Okay, do the unwed mothers get to borrow the box? 2w
Bklover It seems that there are some inconsistencies in whether you are considered a harlot, or that it “just happens.” And it helps if you can play a musical instrument. 2w
Ruthiella Too me, this chapter isn‘t really that different from how society judges women having children now. 2w
julieclair I liked the idea of The Box. Unless, as @mcctrish asks, the unwed mothers are excluded. That would be awful. 2w
willaful I'm surprised by the “pink for girls, blue for boys.“ My understanding is it wasn't codified until the 20th century and it was the other was around when it was! 2w

Ruthiella @dabbe 🤣🤣🤣 2w
Ruthiella @willaful There‘s a lot in here that is repeated from new generation to new generation and it‘s only by reading that we understand this. I was thinking about how probably the worst factory made furniture of the 50s is still better than throw away IKEA furniture of today. (edited) 2w

mcctrish It‘s just a lot of words setting the scene for an episode of All Creatures Great and Small imo and I‘d like it to start already 2w
willaful @dabbe It's definitely ballads! I'm interested in folk music, so I enjoyed this chapter. I recognized a few of these because they made it to Appalachia and Jean Ritchie sang them. 2w

julieclair @Cuilin I love your perspective! I think I need to change the lens through which I have been viewing this book. 2w

Bookwormjillk I don‘t even need drama- just some sense of a connected story would be nice! But you‘re right on the Christmas Story connection 😂 2w

mcctrish This made me flinch 2w
TheAromaofBooks I did think it was interesting that the “mother village“ was smaller than the “hamlet.“ I get that it's the location of the home farm, which makes it more important, but it also seems like more people would live there! 2w
Librarybelle While I don‘t mind very minute details about every day life, a part of me is wondering how in the world they came up with a TV series for this. I guess lots of TV magic, unless we get into storylines in the book very soon. 2w
julieclair @mcctrish 😂😂😂👍 2w
julieclair 🥱😴💤😪 2w
dabbe I almost wrote this yesterday and am in agreement with all of you so far: is there a plot anywhere in our future? 🙏🏻 2w
Crinoline_Laphroaig It made for a wonderful sleep story. I fell asleep to audiobook almost immediately. 2w
willaful @dabbe I looked it up on wikipedia and from what I can glean... no. How did they make an entire show about this?! 2w
Bklover @Crinoline_Laphroaig I keep falling asleep too! I keep thinking how different this is from our last adventure. No crying or fainting here! 2w
BarbaraJean @willaful Noooo!! I keep thinking there will be a semblance of a story when we get to the next chapter… you have shattered my hopeful delusion 😩 2w
dabbe @willaful I don't know if I can read 500+ pages of that. 😬 2w

eeclayton I've been enjoying the descriptions so far, but I wouldn't mind if things started happening sooner rather than later. 3w

Ruthiella I‘m enjoying this look at a lost time and place, but taking it with a grain of salt regarding things like children grew up without neuroses because they played outside in all weathers etc. 3w
TheAromaofBooks Yes, this is interesting but... not very story-ish as of yet 😂 3w
Bookwormjillk I hope this isn‘t boring too. I was getting invested in Edward and what‘s her name today but then it said we‘re not going to talk about them any more. PS I can see the pram in the preview but not the post. (edited) 3w
mcctrish @eeclayton it‘s pretty wordy for not much happening @TheAromaofBooks it‘s pretty much just a written accounting of a day in the life @Ruthiella kind of makes you think the author time travelled back from our current phone raised generation to make sweeping generalities 3w
Bklover @Ruthiella Yes! And also that being “soundly spanked” made them not repeat the behavior as opposed to “laying up complexes” that will spoil their later lives. 🙄. I‘m starting to think that there may not be much plot here. @TheAromaofBooks @mcctrish @eeclayton 3w
willaful All valid complaints but I am actually enjoying it. I hope we do get some story soon though.

I kind of feel the author is a little dishonest? She's writing like it's perfectly fine that the two intellectually curious kids get no encouragement or help but I don't believe it left no scars. And I don't believe there weren't any other “different“ kids who had a hard time with their way of life, either.
3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm caught up! Although I did skip over Chapter 1 pig killing. 3w
julieclair I keep falling asleep as I read. I think this might be boring. Hoping for a plot to emerge soon. 2w
rubyslippersreads @Bookwormjillk It seems odd that we wouldn‘t hear more about Laura; she‘s the main character in the TV show. 🫤 2w

Crinoline_Laphroaig @Cuilin @mcctrish Twixmas has got me too! 3w
AllDebooks I just got triggered by reading reposed in the intro! Too much of that in Udolpho 3w
mcctrish I have to say I share Laura‘s decor style, every summer I decorated the inside of outhouse at the cottage with pictures from magazines my aunt got from her friend who worked for Air Canada. Every summer had a theme- once it was food, once flowers, once each wall a different colour. The pig running away mid kill made me laugh out loud 3w
rubyslippersreads @mcctrish I‘m glad I‘m not the only one. 3w
Bklover I was feeling quite lazy and spoiled as I ate my caramel/cheese popcorn mix while reading about the children sucking on pigs toes. Raw pigs toes. 🤨 3w
Bookwormjillk @Bklover caramel and cheese is the best popcorn mix 3w
Bklover @Bookwormjillk Yes it is! I made myself half sick by eating waaay too much of it! 3w
mcctrish @Bklover I laughed out loud even louder at your comment 3w
Bklover @mcctrish ❤️😉 3w
dabbe And they're all nice to the pigs and love them and pet them and then slaughter them! #wtf? #charlotteswebtrigger There may be no crying so far in this one, but I was crying! Ooh, look, bacon! #twisted 3w
JacqMac I read this in my bed when I couldn‘t sleep. And now I‘m so hungry. lol 3w

rubyslippersreads @Bklover The “shoes” were revolting. 🤢 2w

My June pick for #12booksof2024 with @Andrew65 I actually listened to the audiobook with a friend. Her class was reading it and she wanted to read it ahead of time. Long car ride from Florida to SC meant we listened to most of it, and I finished it at home. So so good!

Karkar What always surprises me about this one every time I read it is back when he wrote it school shootings were not a thing. But you would think from this book he wrote it today. 3w
5feet.of.fury Yeah, that was nuts. I can see why he pulled it after Columbine (and the continued epidemic of school shootings) with the way Charlie is presented in the end/showing the impact on the hostages as positive. 3w
BookwormAHN @5feet.of.fury That always bothered me too. It was almost cult leaderish. 3w
