The Bell Jar | Sylvia Plath

Cuilin I‘m not sure I want to read anymore but I will. It‘s triggering something. Can you get secondhand melancholy from a book? 2d
See All 20 Comments
ElizaMarie The part - “It seemed silly to wash one day when I would only have to wash again the next. It made me tired just to think of it.“ - Made me so so sad for her!

@Cuilin I feel a bit of the blahs too after reading this chapter.
(edited) 2d
BarkingMadRead @Cuilin @ElizaMarie for sure! It‘s gloomy and snowy here in SC and she‘s definitely got me feeling the blues 2d
mcctrish This might not be the best book for February blahs - I went outside for the first time in days today. I was putting on a bit of a protest against winter and left to my own devices I could have held out longer but my husband was grousing that we had no apples left for his lunch. Or bananas. Or berries. Anyways I went to the grocery store and I survived. I feel Esther‘s pain. Adulting is hard. I don‘t think electric shock is the answer 2d
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish we have like zero food in our house 🤣 I have hated the grocery store ever since Covid, I‘m scarred for life 2d
mcctrish @BarkingMadRead I want to know why the cashiers don‘t bag groceries for you anymore?! It just makes me lose my mind with rage! I‘m spending $260 on groceries in a store, I could go anywhere, I‘ve chosen this one, appreciate my business UGH 2d
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish you need to move to SC 🤣 they bag your groceries and will push your cart to the car and unload them too 2d
willaful @mcctrish They found out how much they could get away with during lockdown. 🤬 I'll never forget the gas station that had closed down its public bathrooms “for your safety“ but of course didn't require masks. Security theater, so much of it.

This was definitely a depressing chapter. Esther seems pretty seriously mentally ill to me, but damn, shock treatment is a lot before trying something else, *anything* else!
2d
mcctrish @willaful or how little 😡 2d
Bookwormjillk This chapter was really hard to take. 2d
dabbe How does this doc only see her TWICE before recommending shock therapy? Was that the 1st answer in the 60s? A very difficult chapter to read. She reminds me in so many ways of Holden Caulfield. 😞 2d
Ruthiella @mcctrish The supermarket doesn‘t bag your groceries? They do here in Southern California. We do have to put them on the conveyor belt ourselves. When I was a kid, the cashier also emptied the cart for the shopper. (edited) 2d
mcctrish @Ruthiella 🤯 I‘m conducting a poll on FB of what stores bag or if anyone even cares 🤦🏻‍♀️ my usual store does bag but I went to a store close to home today instead of the one on the way home from school and no bagging, even though I gave her my bins to load 2d
mcctrish @dabbe RIGHT? 2d
ElizaMarie @mcctrish @dabbe @willaful yeah I don‘t think she really needs ECT (I have treated patients pre and post ECT and—- try something first! ) like 2 doc appointments and they already gave up!? (edited) 2d
Clare-Dragonfly Yikes, as I expected—the shrink sucks. Going straight to electric shocks is not wise! Do you really think she‘s going to Chicago? There was something about a stop two blocks from her house. Sadly I just don‘t think she has the chutzpah to do something so bold. 2d
CogsOfEncouragement I finished this chapter after a short walk in the sunshine. Very helpful. 1d
julieclair This chapter made me so sad. Her depression, the shock treatment, the overall feeling of flatness. Just sad. 17h

Cuilin That ending was a bit underwhelming. I would also give it a soft pick as a novel, but the amateur historian in me #FullSend I‘m definitely gonna check out the TV series. 2w
See All 15 Comments
mcctrish I am happy to be out of this #underwhelmedonallcounts what happened to Laura? Not even flora cares 2w
Ruthiella I really liked this book a lot! I didn‘t mind that it was slow and plotless. 😆😍 2w
Bookwormjillk I think this would probably be a better TV show. Was afraid to watch before I finished so I wouldn‘t spoil the ending…but there was no ending? Anyway I would read the phone book with you all so I still enjoyed it for all my complaining. 2w
rubyslippersreads @Bookwormjillk @cuilin The TV show is great. I‘m still working on the book. Like @Ruthiella I don‘t mind the lack of plot, but I‘m marveling at how they made a series out of this. (edited) 2w
Bookwormjillk Also Miss Lane gives Misery vibes and I would have liked to hear more about that. #ImYourBiggestFan 2w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk omg she 💯 does! 🤣🤣🤣 2w
willaful Also a soft pick for me.

I was just reading some of Flora's history... not only did her favorite brother die in WWI but her son died in WWII. 😭 It was a hard time to be alive.
2w
Deblovestoread Glad to have read it chp a day. I don't think i would have finished otherwise. I would have liked an epilog with how the rest of Laura's life went. I loved the show and am looking forward to a re-watch starting tonight. 2w
KAO I really did enjoy this—though I would not likely have made it through without the daily accountability and all of your comments! Thank you! I just started watching episode 1 of season 1 of the 2008 series from PBS—and I can completely understand your frustration if you had seen the series before reading the book! So much drama in episode 1 already! Whoever wrote the script had modern audiences in mind, I‘m sure. 2w
TheAromaofBooks I did like this but I do wish some of it had been a bit more focused on Laura, as those were my favorite parts. But it was all very interesting - although I'm not sure I would have finished if it wasn't for this group!!! 2w
dabbe We got the most detailed explanations for pretty much every single thing in Lark Rise and Candleford--plus extreme details for every little thing Laura did, every flower she saw, every game she played, ... yet we don't know why she just up and leaves? #wth? The ending made me go 🤯!!! 2w
Bklover I actually enjoyed this somewhat, and I‘m glad we read it. Particularly enjoyed reading it with the #hashtagbrigade ! However I will admit that the idea of watching the show now is painful! 😂 2w

Cuilin @Bookwormjillk a season I‘d watch with popcorn!! 2w
willaful Team Susie! 2w
mcctrish I‘m behind because of my obsession with Fourth wing/Iron Flame and then I read this chapter - opening with a death roll, poor choices, pig wash theft ( I don‘t even know what it is but for shame), then spousal abuse and a forerunner for todays political arena where if you yell lies loud and long enough people believe them #goodgrief 2w
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish I‘m reading Iron Flame right now, although I‘m not getting through it as fast as I‘d like! 2w
mcctrish @BarkingMadRead I read Fourth Wing basically in a day with a break for sleeping - I‘m taking longer with this one and I‘m almost at the end and now I have slowed down because I‘m afraid of a cliff hanger. I grabbed Onyx Storm from Costco but I have ACOTAR to start and irl book club too so I have to push OS out 2w

Cuilin This chapter helped me understand how they made a tv show. Tommy and Mr William seem good sorts. The Baker family with their 8 kids, Ruby and Pearl! 3w
See All 10 Comments
Ruthiella @Cuilin I‘ve not seen the show but have wondered what they might have pulled from the book, what they might leave out, what they might embellish… 3w
TheAromaofBooks The story about the guy just wandering off for a YEAR?! I need MORE DETAILS on where he was and on poor Mrs. Macey's sketchy missing husband 😂 3w
willaful Maybe I was spoiled by book 2 but I'm having so much trouble getting interested in this one! Just dying for it to be over already, 3w
KAO @TheAromaofBooks Agreed! Where in the world was this man for an entire YEAR?! And the mystery of Mrs. Macey‘s husband off with “his gentleman” is very suspicious. I‘m betting we never find out more about these, but I hope I‘m wrong! 3w
willaful @KAO Any other author, we definitely would. For this one, odds are against us! 3w
mcctrish Me too @willaful also the abrupt way of introducing characters and then writing “but never fear dear reader, he‘s dead and buried in South Africa “ so I get whiplash 2w
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks @KAO YES! I have so many questions!! @mcctrish All the death previews are grating on me 😆 2w

Cuilin Edmund is my favorite!!!!!! I laughed so hard at “take up your bonnie bridegroom!” It reminds me of my sister and I quoting Monty Python sketches. (edited) 1mo
julieclair I am hopelessly behind, but please keep tagging me. 🙄🤪💙 1mo
TheBookHippie I highly suggest the illustrated version 😂😂😂😂😂 1mo
Bookwormjillk I feel like this book is getting a lot better. Is it just me? 1mo
willaful @Bookwormjillk It so helps to have an actual narrative and main character!

My heart just broke over her mom seeing her writing as “wasting her time“ when she should be SEWING! I guess it made sense at the time, but how awesome that “Laura“ turned out to be a writer with a zillion editions of her books.
1mo
Ruthiella I really loved the sweet moment with Miss Spencer. 1mo
mcctrish @Cuilin Edmund makes me laugh too 4w
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk it‘s better but it‘s not good 🤣🤣 4w
BarbaraJean @willaful Yes! An actual main character and additional recognizable characters that sometimes appear in more than one chapter! 😆 I felt the same about Laura‘s writing. 4w
BarbaraJean @Bookwormjillk I was thinking today that it‘s getting better, so it‘s not just you—but then it also occurred to me that maybe I‘m just used to it now. So I guess I‘m also in agreement with @mcctrish 😆 4w
Bklover @TheBookHippie I ordered the Illustrated version about a week ago from ThriftBooks. Can‘t want till it gets here. This is, of course, after I purchased a regular copy on ThriftBooks plus a different version from Amazon (I forgot I‘d ordered ThriftBooks) So I now own three copies of a book that I kind of doubt I‘ll read a second time! 😂 4w
TheBookHippie @Bklover I have done that … more than once 😂😵‍💫🤪 4w
dabbe I am so glad you posted the Python pic! That's exactly what I thought of when I read that part! 😂🤩😂 And yay to the shorter chapters! Though the next one is looonnnnnggggg. 😱 4w

eeclayton I've been enjoying the descriptions so far, but I wouldn't mind if things started happening sooner rather than later. 2mo

Ruthiella I‘m enjoying this look at a lost time and place, but taking it with a grain of salt regarding things like children grew up without neuroses because they played outside in all weathers etc. 2mo
TheAromaofBooks Yes, this is interesting but... not very story-ish as of yet 😂 2mo
Bookwormjillk I hope this isn‘t boring too. I was getting invested in Edward and what‘s her name today but then it said we‘re not going to talk about them any more. PS I can see the pram in the preview but not the post. (edited) 2mo
mcctrish @eeclayton it‘s pretty wordy for not much happening @TheAromaofBooks it‘s pretty much just a written accounting of a day in the life @Ruthiella kind of makes you think the author time travelled back from our current phone raised generation to make sweeping generalities 2mo
Bklover @Ruthiella Yes! And also that being “soundly spanked” made them not repeat the behavior as opposed to “laying up complexes” that will spoil their later lives. 🙄. I‘m starting to think that there may not be much plot here. @TheAromaofBooks @mcctrish @eeclayton 2mo
willaful All valid complaints but I am actually enjoying it. I hope we do get some story soon though.

I kind of feel the author is a little dishonest? She's writing like it's perfectly fine that the two intellectually curious kids get no encouragement or help but I don't believe it left no scars. And I don't believe there weren't any other “different“ kids who had a hard time with their way of life, either.
2mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm caught up! Although I did skip over Chapter 1 pig killing. 2mo
julieclair I keep falling asleep as I read. I think this might be boring. Hoping for a plot to emerge soon. 2mo
rubyslippersreads @Bookwormjillk It seems odd that we wouldn‘t hear more about Laura; she‘s the main character in the TV show. 🫤 2mo

dabbe @Luke-XVX I think it was Anne Archer, though they both look a LOT alike! 🤩 2mo
Luke-XVX Haha I stand corrected! (Now I remember her from Patriot Games) 2mo
mcctrish Todays chapter could have been the whole book #justsaying 2mo
eeclayton At least now we know what was behind the veil. Even if it was a very WTF kinda explanation. 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish Right?! 😂 Also, who else was shocked that Laurentini is her first name?! I definitely thought it was a last name. 2mo
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly that‘s the mystery right there 🤣🤣🤣 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish The real mystery of Udolpho: Who Are These Udolpho People Who Name Their Kid Laurentini? 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @mcctrish - LITERALLY what I was thinking when I was reading this - this is like a synopsis of all the actually interesting parts of this story that we weren't allowed to know about for some reason 😂 2mo
peanutnine @TheAromaofBooks I definitely think it would have been more effective if we had learned what Emily read/saw earlier on and then revealed what it all meant at the end. Explaining it away immediately after revealing the mystery made it so much less shocking as a reader 2mo
TheAromaofBooks @peanutnine - I totally agree!! I think if we knew what Emily did - that there was a half-decayed body in a hidden room - EVERYTHING would have been way creepier than just “something is there“ - and then in the end we get the big reveal about it not being a real body. As it is it was just kind of - it's a body! PSYCH! The end. lol 2mo

BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks for real! Like he was just a footnote 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
mcctrish That‘s was so much blather for nothing 2mo
Bookwormjillk This is the kind of chapter that really makes me not like this book. Emily is about to get to the bottom of things but oh wait there‘s music 🙄 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly All the hints about Emily looking like the marchioness! But she couldn‘t exactly have a secret kid, could she?! 2mo
