mcctrish Giving religion a bad name 1d
dabbe To be the only student ... YIKES! And (gasp) Tom behaves like a girl and actually has his hubris stomped on a little bit. I think it's a good lesson for him--even though his actual lessons are 😱! 1d
See All 8 Comments
KAO Whew. That chapter was rather long and somewhat tedious (though I liked the bit of life reflection in the last lines). Maybe the feeling that this chapter would never end parallels Tom‘s feeling about this long and tedious academic term. 22h
TheAromaofBooks I actually found myself liking Tom for the first time in this chapter. 20h
Bookwormjillk I‘ll admit it. It‘s Monday. I skimmed. 19h
ElizaMarie Tom can‘t ever let Maggie have any props 17h
Morr_Books I wish I had learned more languages when I was younger, but Latin was never one of them 2h

Clare-Dragonfly I was thinking P&P too 😂 And I love the shade thrown on sister Glegg‘s clothing. Doesn‘t she know the rule that if you wore it when it was in fashion, you don‘t wear it when it comes around again? 1w
dabbe Maggie cries almost as much as Emily from UDOLPHO! 😂😭😂 1w
See All 15 Comments
julieclair @dabbe Next thing we know she‘ll start waxing poetic about #VerdantVerdure 😂 1w
julieclair Sister Gregg is on my last nerve. 1w
Morr_Books @julieclair Agree! I did enjoy Mr. Glegg - plus Mr. Tulliver vs. Mrs. Glegg. 1w
Bookwormjillk Some things never change though with the drama about meal times and people refusing to just have a snack for goodness sakes. Or maybe that‘s just my family. 1w
mcctrish Mrs Tulliver hurt her sister‘s feeling wearing her own hair aka Glegg who‘s got her third best fake hair on cuz it‘s a weekday 🤯 which is a wonderful lead up to berating Maggie so much she chops her own hair off just to show Glegg. 🤦🏻‍♀️ maybe she can sell Glegg her hair ? 1w
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish Glegg can suck it! She‘s the worst! 1w
mcctrish Glegg is the worst 1w
Clare-Dragonfly I think Glegg might be a worse aunt than Mrs. Norris. 😱 1w
dabbe @julieclair 🎯🩵🤣 1w
Ruthiella “And uncle Pullet had a great natural faculty for ignorance.” 😂😂😂 “Well, if I may be allowed to speak, and it‘s seldom as I am,” said Mrs Glegg.” (edited) 1w
ElizaMarie @Ruthiella 😂😂😂😂 1w
Leftcoastzen When I was reading all the back & forth with the aunts , I‘m thinking why do they put up with them , especially Gregg . The Tullivers just seem more down to earth. Maggie is a wild one , no doubt. I‘m getting the feeling that Tom will be insufferable after a bit of education 🙄I‘m behind this week .Loving the book though. 6d

Bklover Who is the sneaky foreigner who follows porkchop? Hopefully one of the good guys! 4w

BarkingMadRead @Bklover I hope we find out, there‘s not much left! 4w
Clare-Dragonfly I was highly suspicious that the Count was really a spy back when Laura said it randomly! #yaypesca #waltlauramarianthrouple #changemymind 4w
Bklover @Clare-Dragonfly Laura doesn‘t actually say a whole lot in this book, so it was definitely notable! She‘s generally too busy being fragile 😉 4w
Bookwormjillk Porkchop‘s schedule and his description of the birds had me cracking up. 4w
Ruthiella I read many years ago somewhere that Count Fosco was an influence on the Bond villain, Bloefeld (the one with the white cat). I see the connection. Charming but deadly. Fond of animals. 4w
mcctrish Porkchop laughing at Walt not accepting coffee - the English always pick the wrong thing to be worried about. Yet the Italian played a long con for something Laura would have happily given her aunt - her inheritance and skipped the murder/lock up 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4w
ElizaMarie @BkLover I love your description of Laura #TooFragileToFunction :) I hope this #MysteryMan does something!!! (edited) 4w
ElizaMarie #INeedATwist at the end! 4w
Leftcoastzen #yaypesca I‘m so tired of #countporkchop making their lives miserable. Love the scene where he grows fearful at the Opera ! 4w

Bookwormjillk Am I the only one that thinks Walter and Marian would make a much better couple? 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk I totally agree, they are much more suited to each other 1mo
Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk You are not the only one! 1mo
dabbe @mcctrish Such a narcissistic wimp! 1mo
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly Good one! 🤩 1mo
dabbe @Bookwormjillk Nope. Laura just lies around, saying “Ah is me.“ She's the typical #damselindistress Marian is so much more interesting! 🤩 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Bookwormjillk Oh, they would be! They work together really well. I suspect it is an Elinor Dashwood and Colonel Brandon type of situation… 1mo
mcctrish I ship Waltarian/Marialter completely @Bookwormjillk also @Clare-Dragonfly despite the menacing tone of the letter I did laugh out loud at #manofaction @dabbe I‘d lose my marbles too if no one believed me that I was me especially my stupid fucking uncle but I‘d burn his house to the ground cuz if I‘m dead who can make me pay #letsgohauntunclenervous 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I thought the same thing 1mo
Bookwormjillk @mcctrish dead ladies can‘t do crimes 1mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk that might be a whole other book 🤣🤣👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 1mo

BarbaraJean @Bookwormjillk You‘re not wrong about Marian, but according to Walter “the lady is ugly!” 🙄 1mo
BarbaraJean @Bookwormjillk @mcctrish @dabbe We have our fanfic title ready: “Dead Ladies Can‘t Do Crimes: We Ride at Dawn.” Who‘s gonna write it? I‘m first in line to read! 1mo

dabbe @BarbaraJean @Bookwormjillk OMG, this is #perfection! 🤩🤣🤩 I say @mcctrish can start it because she had the best line: “We ride at dawn.“ 🤩 1mo

repost for @BarkingMadRead:

God forbid he uses actual chapters to make our lives easy 🙄 #thisfreakingguy #anyway take a look at how I divided it up and let me know if it doesn‘t work. I can spread out some of the longer sections an extra day. For the multiple day chapters… they are divided into sections, so the numbers at the end are how many sections each day. Hope this makes sense. Drop your thought below #hashtagbrigade we start Saturday

Ruthiella Wilkie took a lot of opium. Give him a break. 😂 2mo
Bookwormjillk @Ruthiella well that bodes well 😂 2mo
julieclair I think you‘ve done a brilliant job trying to wrangle dear Wilkie‘s opium-induced non-chapterism into submission! 👍🤪😂 2mo
Bklover I actually followed the plan (I think!). Sounds good to me. Oh, and maybe the opium will make this interesting! 2mo
KathyWheeler Can I be added to this event? I‘ve owned this book for years and would like to get motivated to actually read it! 2mo
kwmg40 Looks good. I'll try to follow as best I can! 2mo
TheAromaofBooks Looks great!! Sooo complicated when a book doesn't have just regular chapters!! 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly Eep! I‘ll do my best to keep up! 😅 2mo
KAO I don‘t really follow. “March 2-4 5 per day”? Isn‘t this 96 pages for the first section divided by 3 days=32 pages per day? What does “5 per day” mean? Edited: Oh!! This must mean five parts labeled with Roman numerals! I see now. (edited) 1mo
KAO I‘m not so sure I‘ll keep up with the rest of the books I have going! I‘ll give it a shot though. 1mo
BarkingMadRead @kao that chapter is split into sections, so it‘s 5 sections of that chapter per day. If I split it into pages, it might have us stopping mid- mini chapter. There are 15 mini chapters (edited) 1mo
CatLass007 Well thank goodness the free Audible copy has the same table of contents. 1mo
BarkingMadRead @catlass007 I had real stress that the different copies would be set up different 🤣#freakingwilkie (edited) 1mo
BarbaraJean This looks good to me! Thank you for divvying up all of Wilkie‘s eclectic “chapters” for us! Of course, I still have to check the TOC in my library ebook copy… because I could have SWORN I owned a copy but it is nowhere to be found. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
KAO @BarkingMadRead I get it now! I just finished reading sections 1-5 of the first part this morning. I‘m enjoying it so far! 1mo
BarkingMadRead @kao yayyyyyyy 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Are we starting today (Saturday, March 1) or tomorrow (March 2)? 😅 1mo

Cuilin I‘m not sure I want to read anymore but I will. It‘s triggering something. Can you get secondhand melancholy from a book? 2mo
See All 21 Comments
ElizaMarie The part - “It seemed silly to wash one day when I would only have to wash again the next. It made me tired just to think of it.“ - Made me so so sad for her!

@Cuilin I feel a bit of the blahs too after reading this chapter.
(edited) 2mo
BarkingMadRead @Cuilin @ElizaMarie for sure! It‘s gloomy and snowy here in SC and she‘s definitely got me feeling the blues 2mo
mcctrish This might not be the best book for February blahs - I went outside for the first time in days today. I was putting on a bit of a protest against winter and left to my own devices I could have held out longer but my husband was grousing that we had no apples left for his lunch. Or bananas. Or berries. Anyways I went to the grocery store and I survived. I feel Esther‘s pain. Adulting is hard. I don‘t think electric shock is the answer 2mo
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish we have like zero food in our house 🤣 I have hated the grocery store ever since Covid, I‘m scarred for life 2mo
mcctrish @BarkingMadRead I want to know why the cashiers don‘t bag groceries for you anymore?! It just makes me lose my mind with rage! I‘m spending $260 on groceries in a store, I could go anywhere, I‘ve chosen this one, appreciate my business UGH 2mo
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish you need to move to SC 🤣 they bag your groceries and will push your cart to the car and unload them too 2mo
willaful @mcctrish They found out how much they could get away with during lockdown. 🤬 I'll never forget the gas station that had closed down its public bathrooms “for your safety“ but of course didn't require masks. Security theater, so much of it.

This was definitely a depressing chapter. Esther seems pretty seriously mentally ill to me, but damn, shock treatment is a lot before trying something else, *anything* else!
2mo
mcctrish @willaful or how little 😡 2mo
Bookwormjillk This chapter was really hard to take. 2mo
dabbe How does this doc only see her TWICE before recommending shock therapy? Was that the 1st answer in the 60s? A very difficult chapter to read. She reminds me in so many ways of Holden Caulfield. 😞 2mo
Ruthiella @mcctrish The supermarket doesn‘t bag your groceries? They do here in Southern California. We do have to put them on the conveyor belt ourselves. When I was a kid, the cashier also emptied the cart for the shopper. (edited) 2mo
mcctrish @Ruthiella 🤯 I‘m conducting a poll on FB of what stores bag or if anyone even cares 🤦🏻‍♀️ my usual store does bag but I went to a store close to home today instead of the one on the way home from school and no bagging, even though I gave her my bins to load 2mo
mcctrish @dabbe RIGHT? 2mo
ElizaMarie @mcctrish @dabbe @willaful yeah I don‘t think she really needs ECT (I have treated patients pre and post ECT and—- try something first! ) like 2 doc appointments and they already gave up!? (edited) 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly Yikes, as I expected—the shrink sucks. Going straight to electric shocks is not wise! Do you really think she‘s going to Chicago? There was something about a stop two blocks from her house. Sadly I just don‘t think she has the chutzpah to do something so bold. 2mo
CogsOfEncouragement I finished this chapter after a short walk in the sunshine. Very helpful. 2mo
julieclair This chapter made me so sad. Her depression, the shock treatment, the overall feeling of flatness. Just sad. 2mo
tpixie @julieclair yes a very sad chapter. @Cuilin here story and the horrible treatments We still are behind the eight ball 🎱 in testing depression. @dabbe I live in Kansas & the groceries here bagged ( for free) and they will take out your groceries to your car, if you‘d like. (edited) 1mo

mcctrish I am happy to be out of this #underwhelmedonallcounts what happened to Laura? Not even flora cares 2mo
Ruthiella I really liked this book a lot! I didn‘t mind that it was slow and plotless. 😆😍 2mo
Bookwormjillk I think this would probably be a better TV show. Was afraid to watch before I finished so I wouldn‘t spoil the ending…but there was no ending? Anyway I would read the phone book with you all so I still enjoyed it for all my complaining. 2mo
rubyslippersreads @Bookwormjillk @cuilin The TV show is great. I‘m still working on the book. Like @Ruthiella I don‘t mind the lack of plot, but I‘m marveling at how they made a series out of this. (edited) 2mo
Bookwormjillk Also Miss Lane gives Misery vibes and I would have liked to hear more about that. #ImYourBiggestFan 2mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk omg she 💯 does! 🤣🤣🤣 2mo
willaful Also a soft pick for me.

I was just reading some of Flora's history... not only did her favorite brother die in WWI but her son died in WWII. 😭 It was a hard time to be alive.
2mo
Deblovestoread Glad to have read it chp a day. I don't think i would have finished otherwise. I would have liked an epilog with how the rest of Laura's life went. I loved the show and am looking forward to a re-watch starting tonight. 2mo
KAO I really did enjoy this—though I would not likely have made it through without the daily accountability and all of your comments! Thank you! I just started watching episode 1 of season 1 of the 2008 series from PBS—and I can completely understand your frustration if you had seen the series before reading the book! So much drama in episode 1 already! Whoever wrote the script had modern audiences in mind, I‘m sure. 2mo
TheAromaofBooks I did like this but I do wish some of it had been a bit more focused on Laura, as those were my favorite parts. But it was all very interesting - although I'm not sure I would have finished if it wasn't for this group!!! 2mo
dabbe We got the most detailed explanations for pretty much every single thing in Lark Rise and Candleford--plus extreme details for every little thing Laura did, every flower she saw, every game she played, ... yet we don't know why she just up and leaves? #wth? The ending made me go 🤯!!! 2mo
Bklover I actually enjoyed this somewhat, and I‘m glad we read it. Particularly enjoyed reading it with the #hashtagbrigade ! However I will admit that the idea of watching the show now is painful! 😂 2mo

Cuilin @Bookwormjillk a season I‘d watch with popcorn!! 2mo
willaful Team Susie! 2mo
mcctrish I‘m behind because of my obsession with Fourth wing/Iron Flame and then I read this chapter - opening with a death roll, poor choices, pig wash theft ( I don‘t even know what it is but for shame), then spousal abuse and a forerunner for todays political arena where if you yell lies loud and long enough people believe them #goodgrief 2mo
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish I‘m reading Iron Flame right now, although I‘m not getting through it as fast as I‘d like! 2mo
mcctrish @BarkingMadRead I read Fourth Wing basically in a day with a break for sleeping - I‘m taking longer with this one and I‘m almost at the end and now I have slowed down because I‘m afraid of a cliff hanger. I grabbed Onyx Storm from Costco but I have ACOTAR to start and irl book club too so I have to push OS out 2mo

Cuilin This chapter helped me understand how they made a tv show. Tommy and Mr William seem good sorts. The Baker family with their 8 kids, Ruby and Pearl! 2mo
See All 10 Comments
Ruthiella @Cuilin I‘ve not seen the show but have wondered what they might have pulled from the book, what they might leave out, what they might embellish… 2mo
TheAromaofBooks The story about the guy just wandering off for a YEAR?! I need MORE DETAILS on where he was and on poor Mrs. Macey's sketchy missing husband 😂 2mo
willaful Maybe I was spoiled by book 2 but I'm having so much trouble getting interested in this one! Just dying for it to be over already, 2mo
KAO @TheAromaofBooks Agreed! Where in the world was this man for an entire YEAR?! And the mystery of Mrs. Macey‘s husband off with “his gentleman” is very suspicious. I‘m betting we never find out more about these, but I hope I‘m wrong! 2mo
willaful @KAO Any other author, we definitely would. For this one, odds are against us! 2mo
mcctrish Me too @willaful also the abrupt way of introducing characters and then writing “but never fear dear reader, he‘s dead and buried in South Africa “ so I get whiplash 2mo
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks @KAO YES! I have so many questions!! @mcctrish All the death previews are grating on me 😆 2mo
