Craven Manor | Darcy Coates

Pickpick

I‘ve read a few books by Darcy Coates, and I absolutely love her spooky mansion and ghost stories. Craven Manor was different from her other books I‘ve read. It had a strong emotional theme that made me care about the characters and what happened to them. 👻

Oooo, so dark and creepy! It starts off cozy and then turns on you. A very disturbing read that has many possible interpretations.

ChaoticMissAdventures I love Sarah Waters! If you don't follow YouTuber Simon Savage he is interviewing her in January and having a read along of a couple of her books. Glad you enjoyed this one ✅ 1d

I was a little intimidated by this but was immediately engrossed. Might help that it was inspired by one of my favorite books (though not a retelling, I don't think.)

Ghost Story | Peter Straub

I can understand the mixed reviews. A LONG gothic style read, not much like modern horror. I think Straub was very much under the influence of Hawthorne & James , the town itself turns quietly monstrous shut down with incredible levels of snow. I found it creepy & scary , but such a long way to get there not sure I would recommend to everyone. 🤔could be me being sick most of the time while reading it influenced this review?🤧

Not sure why this has so many 'so-so' reviews, I think sometimes people expect more than they need. This was a Dickensian, traditional, gothic style novel that delivered exactly what it was supposed to. It has atmosphere, tension and an openly supernatural plot that reached an exciting climax. More please!

I‘ve been quiet on Litsy since Tuesday. I couldn‘t read for a few days. Life as we know it changed on Tuesday. I wrote the above to my friends the other day and I doubt this feeling will go away anytime soon. I have so many thoughts about our future but will save those for another forum. I will say though that as readers, especially of history, we can feel the danger. I just wanted folks to know that this white senior citizen voted for the future.

quietlycuriouskate I'm on the other side of the Atlantic and that's pretty much how I feel, too. 😰 2w
Suet624 @quietlycuriouskate 💕 I haven‘t slept in days. 2w
AllDebooks It's a very scary time, and the damage will be done globally. Take time to address your fears and anger, then ask yourself what you can do. Building supportive communities that protect the vulnerable is one. Love and compassion are always the answer, not hate and division. Unfortunately, the whole world has to deal with a President Elect who has nothing but the latter on his mind. It's up to us as citizens to stand up and say NO!!! 2w

AllDebooks Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's post really helped me find hope. It's well worth a watch when you're ready. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DCDRaRoxJYW/?igsh=MXNwbDg4MmYxYWFrdg== 2w
Suet624 @AllDebooks thank you for sharing your thoughts. I live in Vermont and by and large we are focused on community. We take care of each other. That being said, our state had a bit of a red wave here too. So I will work now to ensure that our reps stay true to our desire to be a port in the storm for people of all persuasions. 2w
AllDebooks @Suet624 I'm in the UK and thinking of you all across the pond. You're not alone. X 2w

Librarybelle Thank you for posting this. On a different platform earlier this week, I shared similar sentiments regarding history and the dark parallels between today and other horrifying events. I‘m still numb. I can only hope. 2w
Suet624 @Anna40 thank you. 2w
Suet624 @Librarybelle thanks Jess. I guess hope is all we have. 😩 2w
TrishB So sorry for you all 💔 2w
Suet624 @TrishB thank you. Living in a supercharged evil empire was not on my bucket list. 2w
AmyG We live in frightening times. I may never see our country as a democracy again in my lifetime. I feel like I am in mourning (I am). 2w
seibelsays ❤️❤️❤️ I feel this too. 2w
Suet624 @AmyG I think that's what a lot of people don't understand - that midterms and next elections may just go by the wayside or be manipulated by misinformation and Russian interference. So I'm with you on this. 2w
Suet624 @seibelsays One of these days I might be able to rouse myself and push back against the hate that will surround so many. For now I need to pull back the pieces of my heart that broke on Tuesday. I hope you have folks around you who support you. 2w
Graywacke @Suet624 I‘m with you. Most Americans that actually voted voted for a time-bomb, in full knowledge of what they were voting for. Meanwhile something like 1/8 of Biden voters didn‘t even vote. I‘m bitter and sad. But, take care of yourself first. Hugs. 2w
DogMomIrene @Suet624 The oncoming misinformation and manipulation concern me as well. Institutions may not hold, especially if 🍊starts dismantling them per Project 2025 or similar. 2w
Lindy You aren‘t alone. Grief is what I am feeling. Poetry helps. 2w
Cuilin The grief and pain is absolutely real. I live in New Hampshire, which you know is also blue yet people who voted for Kamala Harris also elected a pro Trump Governor, it makes no sense. 2w
Deblovestoread Exactly this. And somehow those of us who care are going to have to find the strength to pick up the pieces and help those who are damaged….which will include those who voted for the destruction 🤬🤯😭. Still vacillating between being furious and puddles of tears. 2w

Lcsmcat You expressed exactly what I am feeling. It feels existential tome and yet around me in this swing state are people who are actually rejoicing. 💔 2w
Suet624 @Graywacke I just had a very long visit with my Tibetan friend who was really really helpful. She understands my pain (for all of those who will be hurt) but is trying to get me to focus on taking care of myself first. I've turned off as many news sources as I can because each article just batters my heart. So, yeah, I'm bitter, but mostly grieving right now. I hope you find your way through this too. 💖 2w
Suet624 @DogMomIrene Yes, I'm assuming that's going to be the case. 2w
Suet624 @Lindy Realizing it was despair mixed with grief that I was feeling was helpful. Now I know that I can't move through grief quickly - it takes time. Then I begin the community work again. 2w
Suet624 @Cuilin Hi! I forgot to see who won the Governor's race in NH. This is all just mindblowing. Vermont had more Republicans elected than expected. We still have a Democratic majority so I think we're good for a while but we reelected a republican governor for the 5th time in a row. Ugh. 2w
Suet624 @Lcsmcat Oh gosh . I'm so sorry. So far I haven't seen anyone around me that is rejoicing but I know there are a few. I feel so badly for those folks in red states that have gloating neighbors and guys driving around in trucks with flags flying. That would be so hard to deal with. 2w
Suet624 @kspenmoll Thank you so much for the phone call. It felt really good to talk and to sit in the moments of silence when we just had no words. 2w
Suet624 @Deblovestoread Ugh. Yes. Grief is where I'm stuck right now. And you're right - it's people like us who end up trying to help people, even those who have voted for their own demise. 2w
Lcsmcat @Suet624 I‘ve got like-minded people around me, but you‘re right, the big pick-ups with the monster flags are not a calming site. At least we didn‘t elect Mark Robinson governor. 🙄 2w
Suet624 @Lcsmcat At least there's that. :) 2w

Two down and two in the works for #tenbeforetheend
I‘m thinking I might actually make it.
That would also put me on track to complete my #bookspin and #doublespin reads 100% this year; something I have never done before.😸

Scochrane26 I didn‘t do the 10 but I‘m also focused on reading my missed bookspins & doublespin. 2w

Recommended by my very favorite author, this historical ghost story set in the frigid & isolated Arctic Circle, this makes for an unsettling listen. Jack joins this small research expedition, almost immediately at odds with one of his older & rougher companions. When circumstances strand him alone with the huskies, it‘s more than just the months of darkness that add to the chill… It‘s a quick listen & one that‘d make for a good book club pick!

The tagged book was my favorite read of October. I read a lot of books and most were mediocre unfortunately.

Hopefully November will be better.

#BookBracket #BookBracket24 #BookBracket2024 @Catsandbooks

October: THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR
This will be fun to put together at the end of the year! 🤩

kspenmoll Can you explain to me how the brackets off each month etc works? 🤪 3w
dabbe @kspenmoll I'll try! The far left and right columns are for your favorite book of each month. For ex., for January (upper left), my fave book was A STUDY IN SCARLET. As you fill in the months, once you have two months down (like Jan and March in the left column), you then have to pick your favorite from just those two; for me, BABEL won out over SCARLET. ⬇️ (edited) 3w
dabbe @kspenmoll ... Then, you just keep following the brackets, picking your top choice of the two until your #1 is chosen for the entire year. Does that make sense? 😝🤪😛 3w
