AllDebooks #backtobed 🤣🤣🤣 1d
mcctrish This. Was. Bonkers. Also does Ann use up all her words describing the scenery and has none left over for the actual stuff? And by stuff I mean papers that get burned and portraits that make you faint 1d
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish for real though! 1d
Clare-Dragonfly This was such a long chapter but at least stuff happened? Very annoyed that we don‘t get to see what‘s behind the curtain. My money is on a dead body. ☠️ 1d
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I would love it if it was a dead body, we need some action. 1d
TheAromaofBooks I literally looked up spoilers to see what was behind the curtain because I couldn't deal with not knowing! 😂 1d
BarkingMadRead @TheAromaofBooks Omg you know?!? Don‘t tell me. But omg. No. Don‘t tell me. Ahhhhhhh 1d
Bklover @TheAromaofBooks I think you just gave me my justification to peek. 🫣 😊😊 1d
Bookwormjillk Finished this chapter at exactly 11:59 pm. You know it‘s a long one when the hashtags extend into the comments. I giggled a bit when Auntie was like”whatever.” 1d
TheAromaofBooks @BarkingMadRead @Bklover - I have to confess to the fact that I'm a spoiler lover 😂I don't like being stressed when I'm reading so sometimes I just gotta know! 😆 22h
Clare-Dragonfly I was glad to see that Manchon is still around! 22h

Cuilin I‘m reading my daughter‘s copy that she read for a class. And her note beside “a brave man‘s blood is the best thing on this earth when a woman is in trouble“ was WTF Bram! 😆 1mo

dabbe @Cuilin THAT is priceless! 🤩😂🤩 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly Van Helsing is such a sexist! 🙄 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Cuilin 😂😂😂 1mo
Cuilin @Clare-Dragonfly and verbose 😴 1mo
mcctrish @Cuilin #praisebe 🤣🤣 ‘The Change‘ has quite a different meaning here 1mo
Bookwormjillk @Cuilin 😂😂😂 1mo
Cuilin @mcctrish on a daily basis due to brain fog I say “is this Covid, ADHD, or menopause?” I‘m now going to add in “or was I bitten by a vampire?” 🧛‍♂️😝 1mo
mcctrish @Cuilin I‘m going to say vampire from here on out, makes my life more exciting 1mo
CatLass007 🧛‍♂️ 1mo
rubyslippersreads Lucy certainly had a lot of beaux. And three out of the four actually wanted to *give* her their blood. 😂🦇🩸 1mo
Bklover @Cuilin I blame everything on menopause, but maybe I should switch to 🧛‍♀️😂 1mo
BarkingMadRead @bklover @Cuilin 🧛🏻‍♀️ is so much cooler, IMO 🤷🏻‍♀️ nobody would dare come at you for symptoms of being a vampire 🤣 (edited) 1mo

Bookwormjillk So much going on in this chapter! Bram keeps it moving! 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I made a connection on this read that Lucy‘s strange attacks start out specifically on the grave of a suicide. I don‘t know exactly what that would have meant to the CoE of the time, but from their comments earlier it‘s obviously a particularly bad place to be. 1mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk he sure does! So Renfeld has escaped, his dr is Lucy‘s betrothed? She‘s now addicted to vampire bites, Keanu is checked into the same hospital as Renfeld? Or sent to recover farther afield? Dracula‘s house is beside the hospital where Renfeld is hence the escape #themasterhascometohim #somuchbiting 1mo
Cuilin @Clare-Dragonfly I was just looking up vampire lore and came across other ways to become a vampire excluding being bitten by one, and suicide is on the list. (edited) 1mo
julieclair @Cuilin Interesting! I didn‘t realize there were other ways besides being bitten. 1mo

mcctrish Also “get thee to a penitentiary” is a bit extreme FFS! The Bellinghams are awful people. I‘m not sure which I want more, ‘Mr‘ Bellingham to die OR for him to live and get his ducks in a row 🤞🏼his mother catches the plague next 3mo

Cuilin @mcctrish “get thee to a penitentiary” lol 3mo
Cuilin A girls life hangs in the balance, but heaven forbid we let Mr. Bellingham get annoyed. 😳 3mo
IndoorDame I thought even at this time a penitentiary was a prison. Is there another meaning? 3mo
BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame I looked it up, it‘s more of a charitable institution for fallen women, it‘s basically a rehab to make them “fit for society” 🙄 3mo
IndoorDame @BarkingMadRead 😬 better than prison I guess, but we all know those places have super shady track records historically… 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly I was thinking a penitentiary must be more like a workhouse. A place for “fallen women” makes sense—a place for penitents… I‘m disappointed in my Penguin Classics edition having endnotes, but not one that explains “penitentiary.” 3mo
mcctrish @Cuilin YES! Heaven forbid the boy is annoyed 3mo
Cuilin @IndoorDame @Clare-Dragonfly it‘s giving Magdalene Laundries Scandal. 3mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 🤞🏻 his mother catches the plague 😵‍💫🤣👀 3mo
BarkingMadRead @TheBookHippie can we please try and keep current politics out of the discussion? 3mo
Bookwormjillk Can someone get that money from Mason PLEASE 3mo
dabbe @Cuilin Or accuse HIM of anything in appropriate. It's ALWAYS the woman hussy, isn't it? 🙄 3mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe @Cuilin obviously she was all by herself when the unspeakable happened 🙄 3mo
Cuilin @BarkingMadRead @Dabbe I overheard a woman say there would be no bad men if it weren‘t for bad women! I had to just walk away. (edited) 3mo
dabbe @Cuilin Oh, lordy be. 😮 #speechless 3mo
rubyslippersreads @Cuilin Definitely. 3mo
julieclair @Cuilin You‘re joking. In real life? Present day? How is that even possible? 🤯 3mo
Cuilin @julieclair It was the 90‘s, my teenage self bristled. 3mo
currentlyreadinginCO Mrs B is the worst 🤮, def Dinklage as Benson 🤣🤣 3mo

Bookwormjillk That 5 seconds of defending her was more than I thought she was going to get. Yes very worried about the money. 3mo
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk I thought the money may have been for the bill at the Inn? His behavior is unforgivable. 3mo

IndoorDame 🙋🏻‍♀️ Having major anxiety about the money! 3mo
AllDebooks Urgh, he's so awful. Sending Mummy in to clean up his mess, no doubt, again!! 3mo
mcctrish @IndoorDame I totally said “take the money with you dumbass” in a Jennifer Coolidge voice 3mo
IndoorDame @mcctrish I was doing the horror movie thing, but substituting “don‘t go into the dark creepy basement!” for take the money!/go back and see if the money is still there!” She may have no experience with men, but she has some experience with poverty already, so she it‘s not naïveté that keeps her from realizing how close she is to slipping into abject poverty and what that is. I‘ve decided to blame this character flaw on her being a teenager. 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly Mrs. B is so awful!! She is absolutely determined to see Ruth as bad and Henry as totally innocent, even though Henry tells her straight-up that it‘s his fault (which is far better than I expected of him). I‘m sure Gaskell is just using her to show the prevailing attitude of the time but I can still hate her 😡😡😡 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly I‘m not worried about the money—it‘s in her own room and I‘m pretty sure the landlady and her servants are honest, good people. I‘ve been wrong before though 😂 And I love the “deformed man” saving Ruth by needing help himself—just like when Clarence jumps in the river in It‘s a Wonderful Life! 3mo
willaful LOL, I'm glad I'm not the only one freaking about the money. The people in this book are very good at justifying their own terrible behavior, so I just see it being taken. 3mo
mcctrish @willaful I totally think it could be taken to cover Ruth‘s extra expenses or Mrs B could be charged enough to cover all of it #inaperfectworld and Ruth will have a small sum to start just above the gutter. Ruth is a bit too Blanche Dubois for me (although women can‘t actually do anything for themselves so of course they have to depend on the kindness of men/strangers #somuchforasisterhood ) 3mo
currentlyreadinginCO things really took a turn here 😳😳😳 3mo
Ruthiella OMG Please keep the money Ruth! I remember Tess also being stupid/too proud/too timid to go to Angel‘s family once they were married. 3mo
Aimeesue Excellent pic of the awful Mrs. B! That‘s her all over. 3mo
jewright Good grief this chapter made me so angry. The double standard is awful. 3mo
willaful @mcctrish She's a lot, lot younger than Blanche. 3mo
julieclair There was so much going on I. This chapter that I never even thought about the money! 😂 3mo

BarkingMadRead @Cuilin I 💯 agree! @AllDebooks yessss I‘m worried for Jenny! 4mo
Crinoline_Laphroaig Bellingham: OMG Poor people! 4mo
BarkingMadRead @Crinoline_Laphroaig such a jerk! 🙄🙄 4mo
Clare-Dragonfly Eeeee I do not like Bellingham. He has the superficial trappings of a hero but he‘s all about Ruth just because she‘s pretty, when he must know their status in life is too different for any romance! And then he literally calls a poor person‘s house a pigsty! He‘s so thoughtless. 4mo
Bookwormjillk @Cuilin Bellingham can not be trusted 4mo
mcctrish Bellingham was half okay when he seemed shook at his supposed betrothed lack of regard for Ruth helping her but is absolutely clueless to how little time Ruth has to herself 🤷🏻‍♀️ like it takes a village for him to have tea, what does he think it takes for actual full time living?! 4mo
currentlyreadinginCO Getting Tess vibes, personally 🙄. Love the writing, though, and I've never read this one before so I'm interested 4mo
KAO @currentlyreadinginCO I agree about Tess vibes! Also already very aware of red flags with Bellingham. 4mo
rubyslippersreads @currentlyreadinginCO Definitely Tess vibes. 4mo
dabbe Your summary today was STUPENDOUS!!! You know, there's a book there re: your witty hashtags. 🤔🤩🤗 4mo
dabbe @currentlyreadinginCO #tessheretoo But I cared about Tess, and now I care about Ruth. Damn. 😂 4mo
rubyslippersreads I have a feeling Mr. Bellingham is as respectful of women as Mr. Wickham. 😏 4mo
currentlyreadinginCO Same 😍😍😭 @dabbe 4mo

SpellboundReader I never blame Jo for her reaction. Shame on Amy for being so spiteful and spoiled. 5mo
BarkingMadRead @SpellboundReader I‘ve always felt the same. To burn something that Jo worked on for years, it‘s too much. 5mo
See All 16 Comments
dabbe I think the sourness of sucking on those limes went straight to Amy's head. 🍋‍🟩 5mo
Clare-Dragonfly @SpellboundReader Right?! It would be impossible not to be furious after your sister did such a horrible thing. She was rude to Amy, but Amy‘s reaction was way over the top. 5mo
Bookwormjillk @BarkingMadRead @SpellboundReader agree 100% That was not a proportional response. And then to act like Jo‘s temper was the problem. This chapter really bothers me. 5mo
Cuilin @Bookwormjillk yes, this chapter really bothers me too. I think an apology needs to come with some sort of reparation. Amy offered nothing. Jo‘s feelings are entirely valid 5mo
dabbe @Cuilin Agree 💯! It reminds me of someone who apologizes by saying something like “I'm sorry IF I offended you,“ meaning it is still the other person's fault for being offended. #backhandedapology 5mo
julieclair I totally agree with everyone. Amy‘s reaction was completely disproportionate. And the way the family reacts bothers me too. Even Jo seemed to think her own anger wasn‘t justified. The family really seems to be coddling Amy here, and she‘s the one who was totally in the wrong. 5mo
mcctrish @dabbe I laughed out loud and Amy just makes me so mad absolutely book throwing mad 5mo
dabbe @mcctrish What an effin prima donna! How did she get such airs in that family? 😂 5mo
TheAromaofBooks I agree that Amy was way out of line, but Jo did literally almost let Amy die because she was angry. She didn't have to forgive her to warn her about the thin ice; by turning away she went from just being angry to wishing active harm on Amy. I don't think anyone expected Jo to just act like nothing had happened, but nursing and encouraging anger and bad feelings towards someone, no matter what they did to you, isn't a healthy response. 5mo
TheAromaofBooks All that being said, I think Marmee needed to have the same conversation with Amy about HER temper, because Amy's fit of temper is what started the whole problem in the first place! 5mo
kspenmoll @SpellboundReader I agree! Amy is a brat prima donna! 5mo
kspenmoll @TheAromaofBooks Yes, Amy is coddled too much/ youngest? Pretty golden hair? 5mo
