mcctrish What just happened? V admits to the debts he could never repay and that he isn‘t worthy of Emily AND is mad that she doesn‘t want to shackle herself to him?! He questions how long the count has been her friend? Meanwhile E has spent about 32 minutes in his actual company and expects her to marry him after whoring and gambling ? RUN AWAY EMILY 2w
Bklover @mcctrish yes! When I think of all the weeping and fainting over V it makes me want to scream. You are right- she doesn‘t even really know him! 2w
mcctrish It‘s nice she had him to focus on while at Udolpho but cut him loose now 2w
Bookwormjillk At first I was kind of on V's side because yeah she just met this Count guy. But then he admitted to it all so bye V. And what is the story of the picture? 2w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk everyone is crying 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2w
Bookwormjillk @BarkingMadRead I meant the one that Emily's dad had that Dorethee was refusing to talk about. She is just not coming back? 2w
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk ohhhhhhhh that picture! We may never know…. 2w
Clare-Dragonfly V keeps going “I‘m terrible and it‘s exactly like the Count says” except no one actually lays out what Emily or V is thinking. I‘d put money on V‘s actual actions not being as bad as what Emily thinks. Of course, I don‘t know whether he‘ll actually TELL HER that before they both die of old age! 2w
julieclair If we don‘t find out about the picture, I‘m going to go nuts. I‘m warming up my book-throwing arm… 2w

Cuilin I‘m reading my daughter‘s copy that she read for a class. And her note beside “a brave man‘s blood is the best thing on this earth when a woman is in trouble“ was WTF Bram! 😆 2mo

dabbe @Cuilin THAT is priceless! 🤩😂🤩 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly Van Helsing is such a sexist! 🙄 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly @Cuilin 😂😂😂 2mo
Cuilin @Clare-Dragonfly and verbose 😴 2mo
mcctrish @Cuilin #praisebe 🤣🤣 ‘The Change‘ has quite a different meaning here 2mo
Bookwormjillk @Cuilin 😂😂😂 2mo
Cuilin @mcctrish on a daily basis due to brain fog I say “is this Covid, ADHD, or menopause?” I‘m now going to add in “or was I bitten by a vampire?” 🧛‍♂️😝 2mo
mcctrish @Cuilin I‘m going to say vampire from here on out, makes my life more exciting 2mo
CatLass007 🧛‍♂️ 2mo
rubyslippersreads Lucy certainly had a lot of beaux. And three out of the four actually wanted to *give* her their blood. 😂🦇🩸 2mo
Bklover @Cuilin I blame everything on menopause, but maybe I should switch to 🧛‍♀️😂 2mo
BarkingMadRead @bklover @Cuilin 🧛🏻‍♀️ is so much cooler, IMO 🤷🏻‍♀️ nobody would dare come at you for symptoms of being a vampire 🤣 (edited) 2mo

mcctrish Also “get thee to a penitentiary” is a bit extreme FFS! The Bellinghams are awful people. I‘m not sure which I want more, ‘Mr‘ Bellingham to die OR for him to live and get his ducks in a row 🤞🏼his mother catches the plague next 4mo

Cuilin @mcctrish “get thee to a penitentiary” lol 4mo
Cuilin A girls life hangs in the balance, but heaven forbid we let Mr. Bellingham get annoyed. 😳 4mo
IndoorDame I thought even at this time a penitentiary was a prison. Is there another meaning? 4mo
BarkingMadRead @IndoorDame I looked it up, it‘s more of a charitable institution for fallen women, it‘s basically a rehab to make them “fit for society” 🙄 4mo
IndoorDame @BarkingMadRead 😬 better than prison I guess, but we all know those places have super shady track records historically… 4mo
Clare-Dragonfly I was thinking a penitentiary must be more like a workhouse. A place for “fallen women” makes sense—a place for penitents… I‘m disappointed in my Penguin Classics edition having endnotes, but not one that explains “penitentiary.” 4mo
mcctrish @Cuilin YES! Heaven forbid the boy is annoyed 4mo
Cuilin @IndoorDame @Clare-Dragonfly it‘s giving Magdalene Laundries Scandal. 4mo
TheBookHippie @mcctrish 🤞🏻 his mother catches the plague 😵‍💫🤣👀 4mo
BarkingMadRead @TheBookHippie can we please try and keep current politics out of the discussion? 4mo
Bookwormjillk Can someone get that money from Mason PLEASE 4mo
dabbe @Cuilin Or accuse HIM of anything in appropriate. It's ALWAYS the woman hussy, isn't it? 🙄 4mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe @Cuilin obviously she was all by herself when the unspeakable happened 🙄 4mo
Cuilin @BarkingMadRead @Dabbe I overheard a woman say there would be no bad men if it weren‘t for bad women! I had to just walk away. (edited) 4mo
dabbe @Cuilin Oh, lordy be. 😮 #speechless 4mo
rubyslippersreads @Cuilin Definitely. 4mo
julieclair @Cuilin You‘re joking. In real life? Present day? How is that even possible? 🤯 4mo
Cuilin @julieclair It was the 90‘s, my teenage self bristled. 4mo

Bookwormjillk Yeah what was that? 11mo
See All 20 Comments
Cuilin One moment he was talking about eating mushrooms, and the next he‘s seeing demons . Connection, perhaps? 11mo
IndoorDame @Cuilin @BarkingMadRead none of the brothers noticed the monk on shrooms having a slightly paranoid trip for what sounds like years and thought to tell him to lay off? Maybe come to dinner with everyone else and have some wine instead once in a while! 😂😂😂 11mo
AllDebooks @IndoorDame 🍄🤪🤣🤣🤣 11mo
dabbe I might have to stop being ahead a day with a chapter because when I read these I'm like “Did I read that yesterday? I don't remember a miracle. Hmm. I better go back and read. Again.“ Time to stick with the correct daily chapter. My mind can't keep track of this plot for some reason. 😅 11mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe in your defense it was in like page one of the chapter and then there were devils everywhere, so it‘s no wonder you forgot 🤷🏻‍♀️ 11mo
Cuilin @IndoorDame lol exactly, lay of shrooms, man. Have some cabbage and potatoes. 11mo
TheAromaofBooks @dabbe - I'm having trouble keeping track of days/chapters because the chapters start over every time we get to a new “book“! 11mo
dabbe @TheAromaofBooks Oy! That, too! Is it Book 4/ch. 3 or Book 3/ch. 4??? 😱 11mo
dabbe @BarkingMadRead Thanks for the support; I feel like such a doofus reading this one! 🤩😂😍 11mo
SamAnne Well, this chapter took some turns. Demons and shrooming. 11mo
Aimeesue @IndoorDame Right? 😂 11mo
Aimeesue @SamAnne At least it‘s not boring? 😋 11mo
mcctrish 🤣🤣🤣 @Cuilin I was reading along “ blah, blah, blah can I skip this ….. wait what ?” 11mo

Bklover Also he comes home and she doesn‘t ask him a single thing about his day. She has absolutely no interest in Rodney! 13mo
Aimeesue Sybil does know! I think he was with Rowena 😂 13mo
BarkingMadRead @Aimeesue that would be amazing #wifeswap 13mo
AnnR These characters aren't very likeable. My reaction to them is similar to the characters in many of Edith Wharton's novels. 13mo
Bklover @Aimeesue That would be perfect wouldn‘t it?!😆 13mo
Bookwormjillk @Aimeesue ha! Perfect! Sybil knows all. 13mo
dabbe @AnnR I so agree! I think I've mentioned more than once how these people make me think of the Gilded Age New York society snobs. Just living their elegantly rich but humdrum lives. 13mo

julieclair So many sad things going on in these chapters. 1y
BarkingMadRead @julieclair I had the worst morning, and I‘m sitting in the car dealership waiting for an oil change, reading this 🙄 thanks for nothing Hardy 🤣 1y

Bookwormjillk Ew I‘m glad I don‘t have pictures in my copy. They showed the horse? 1y
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk mine doesn‘t have pictures, I consulted the google, looking for a pic with the beehives and all that came up was the cart with the horse on the ground 😢😢 1y
dabbe Hardy did a similar stunt in FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD with the death of an animal. I can't take that! 😢 #poorprinceindeed #lifeishardinwessex 1y
KAO This is my first book by Hardy. While I am expecting frustrating events (and no happy ending), I am enjoying the storytelling! If a dog dies, however, I may not be able to take it. (The horse was bad enough.) 1y
BarkingMadRead @KAO I really hope not! I read this a couple years ago, but details are not fresh in my mind! 1y
Clare-Dragonfly Heck yeah! Seasonally appropriate! 💀 1y
Clare-Dragonfly #poorprinceindeed 😭😭😭 @KAO I checked doesthedogdie.com and it only has movies, not books, but over all the movie adaptations there was one vote for no and none for yes. However, nobody marked yes for another animal dying, so it‘s clearly not comprehensive! 1y
currentlyreadinginCO I am wondering where Tess gets her calm and maturity... and I feel for her! And Prince RIP 😭. Very much enjoying the story so far. 1y
Bklover Poor Prince. 🐴🪦 1y
Bklover @KAO I‘m with you. No dogs die!! 1y
julieclair @currentlyreadinginCO I agree about Tess‘s calm and maturity. It‘s impressive. It will be interesting to see if she retains these traits throughly the book. 1y

Bklover I‘m with @Bookwormjillk 😂 1y
Ruthiella Ooh, people like Miss Lavish still exist today! Pooh poohing guidebooks and claiming access to the “real” country. Also , thinking democracy means “civility to your inferiors”. 🙄 1y
Bklover Yep, they‘re still here @Ruthiella 😊🙄 1y
dabbe Our heroine is ready for an Italian adventure! If anyone's seen the 1985 movie, Julian Sands played George. His body was found last week on Mt. Baldy. #ripjulian 💙 1y
Morr_Books I was so excited for this chapter as Santa Croce is one of the places I always highly recommend visiting in Florence - second only to the Uffizi 1y
Morr_Books I am fascinated by the interactions between the characters so far. 1y
BarkingMadRead @dabbe awwwww I‘d heard about that, so sad! 1y
Bookwormjillk @dabbe oh wow I heard about that but didn‘t make the connection 1y
julieclair I will take the heathens over Miss Lavish any day! 1y
TheBookHippie I do so love a good heathen ….. @dabbe I saw that and he‘s been missing so long I‘m glad they found a body! 1y

Crinoline_Laphroaig I'm caught up! Darcy still anti ball. 😄 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig "he did not believe that Pemberley had really been primarily designed for giving balls in; but his family could perceive that his opposition was not intended to be very serious, and the discussion terminated with his promising to talk it over with Elizabeth, and even to consider the middle of November as being a date likely to suit the convenience of both households." 2y

BarkingMadRead @Crinoline_Laphroaig so many things never change 🙄🙄 2y
Ruthiella I love Mrs. Jennings. So happy to see her again. She has such a big heart. 2y
Bookwormjillk Yay! A ball! 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Ruthiella and I liked Elizabeth's defense of her. 2y
ravenlee I can picture Mrs. Jennings trying to play her game, “What letter does his name…” and Kitty rushing in “hisnameisPriceandhe‘salieutenantinthenavyandhe…” 2y
willaful I don't remember Mrs. Jennings! I assume she's from Sense and Sensibility?

I wonder why the book is being so coy about Marianne. It seems a little late to bring her in and give her another husband.
2y
Ruthiella @willaful Yes, she‘s from S&S. She‘s the mother of Lady Middleton. Sir John is Mrs. Dashwood‘s cousin who provides a cottage for Mrs. Dashwood and her daughters once Fanny Dashwood convinces her husband to do nothing for his stepmother and half sisters. She‘s a little low class and makes off color remarks but truly is a kind and generous woman. 2y
dabbe Are we all hoping it'll be Price and Georgianna and Moreland and Kitty? That's what I'm hoping for! And Mrs. Jennings is still a hoot! 😀 2y
BarkingMadRead @dabbe that‘s what I‘m hoping for! 2y
mcctrish Mrs Jennings makes me think of June George “I‘m not a regular mom. I‘m a cool mom” from Mean Girls 2y
Ruthiella @dabbe That‘s the pairing I‘m thinking of too! 2y
peanutnine @dabbe definitely hoping for Georgiana and Price, they are a much better match. Not sure about Kitty and Morland yet, she needs to mature a bit more first I think 2y
rubyslippersreads @willaful I‘m wondering about Marianne too. 2y

Ruthiella Yes. Everyone is so superficial in this neighborhood it seems, even the vicar! 2y
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella it surprised me how rude he was to poor Nancy! Ugh!! 2y
Bookwormjillk 🤣🤣 2y
Clare-Dragonfly I think Nancy and the other neighbors are hoping the sweet governess marries the good vicar! (Just as we are! Though we haven‘t really seen him speak yet.) 2y
dabbe Hatfield kicked Nancy's cat! Evil is too good a word for him! 👿 2y
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻yes and yes @dabbe Hatfield is a total tosser! For some reason I keep thinking of the PBS show Grantchester, although the vicar in that is extremely nice to look at. The Murray girls are something else 2y
Morr_Books I like this book so far, but I like y'all's comments more. 😆❤️ 2y
peanutnine @dabbe right?? I gasped so loud when that happened. What a horrible man 2y
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly No matter what he says when he does speak, it has to be better than anything Hatfield has said so far! 2y
julieclair This quote reminds me of that old (and true) Southern saying, “Pretty is as pretty does.” 2y
