willaful Soooooo depressing! Damn Victorians! 3mo
rubyslippersreads I knew it was coming. There was no other way Ruth could atone for her “sins” in a book written during this era. 😠 3mo

Bookwormjillk So the man recovers and the woman dies after committing the same sin. Got it. (edited) 3mo
mcctrish But #bellingshit gets to live #motherfucker Victorian morals are ridiculous #ffs 3mo
rubyslippersreads @Bookwormjillk @mcctrish Boys will be boys. 🤬 3mo
mcctrish @rubyslippersreads argh that saying infuriates me 3mo
AllDebooks Not the ending we hoped for, but all saw coming. 🙄 3mo
Clare-Dragonfly 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 3mo
rubyslippersreads Someone needs to write fan fiction where Donne dies a horrible death, but not before being publicly shamed. 😏 3mo
dabbe See? Just like Puritan philosophy. You died, so you must not be a witch. I mean whore. Whatever. I wish she had done to Donne what Tess did to the D'urberville dude. 😭 3mo
Aimeesue @rubyslippersreads Yep. Still made me very sad though. 3mo
julieclair Yup. Gaskell went there. As we all suspected she would but hoped she wouldn‘t. 😭 3mo
IndoorDame I was so mad about the sermon at her funeral! She can be absolved and go to heaven, but only after she‘s died to pay for her crimes!? (and spent a dozen years living a ridiculously saint like life). WTF is that!? 3mo

Tess of D'Ubervilles | Thomas Hardy

Cuilin That ending 😢 💔 13mo
Deblovestoread I finished a few days ago. What a heartbreaking story. How I wanted happiness for Tess and how I wanted the men who let her down to pay. So glad to have finally read this classic even with its sadness. Thanks for keeping me motivated! 13mo

currentlyreadinginCO This was fun to read together! Poor Tess! 13mo
Bookwormjillk That about sums it up. The one thing I remember about reading this in high school is my teacher going into a deep explanation about Stonehenge. I guess because if he told us what this book was really about he would have been fired? 13mo
TheBookHippie It‘s just #SOSAD …. Thanks for pulling us through!!! 13mo
quietjenn Thanks for leading us through a terrific, and terrifically devastating read. Can't believe I remembered almost nothing of it. 13mo
Ruthiella Thank for your fearless leadership @BarkingMadRead ! 👏👏👏🤩 The subtitle to this book should be “a novel of poor communication and bad timing”! 13mo
eeclayton Thanks for leading us @BarkingMadRead and thanks everyone for your comments and posts. I couldn't take part in the discussions as much as I had wanted to because it was a really busy period for me both at work and in private, but I was following and enjoying your comments all the while 💕 Hardy broke my heart but I loved the book all the same! 13mo
dabbe Thanks @BarkingMadRead for getting us through this. 🤗 Tess will stay with me for a long time. I'd add that the moral of the story is to never fall asleep on the side of the road in the middle of a dark night. 😃 13mo
julieclair Absolutely heartbreaking ending. 💔 Thanks, @BarkingMadRead for your (as always) excellent leadership through this sad tale. 13mo
Clare-Dragonfly @dabbe One of a number of morals, I‘d say! Another might be “don‘t rape women, even if they are asleep, no matter how hot you think they are.” 13mo
dabbe @Clare-Dragonfly 🤩 13mo
Daisey I knew going in that this was not going to be happy, but it was also quite different from what I expected. I also liked it better than expected. After his treatment of Tess, I was kind of hoping Angel was just going to waste away from his illness, rather than get another chance. 13mo
Bklover What a wonderful and brutally sad book! I do find it frustrating that Angel gets another chance with Tess‘s sister! Thanks @BarkingMadRead for your guidance and humor. Definitely the only way I got through this one! 13mo
KAO Thanks for the company and much needed comic relief on this journey with poor Tess! This was my first group read done with a paced plan, and the encouragement helped get me through a challenging book. I enjoyed it—even if there was some gnashing of teeth at every tragic turn! 13mo
eeclayton @Daisey I was hoping that too! 13mo
BarkingMadRead @KAO I wish we had something more fun for you to start with 🤣 13mo
Bluebird Thanks @BarkingMadRead i had remembered so little of this book from my prior read that this felt like the first time. So terribly sad! You really helped get us all through this tragic book. I really enjoyed(!?!) this group reading. 13mo

Ruthiella I can‘t say that I am surprised. Let‘s see how this pans out…😬 1y
peanutnine So much drama! But I'm glad the truth is out! 1y

Cuilin Oh Price! The 🎭! 1y
willaful Well, I was all too right about it causing a Mr. Elton situation -- in fact, I'm kind of disgusted with the author for borrowing so much from that scene, for such a completely different character. Feh. 1y
BarkingMadRead @willaful I thought the same! 1y
TheAromaofBooks @willaful - Especially since I don't like Price for Georgianna anyway... #hopefullythisgoesnowhere (edited) 1y
willaful @TheAromaofBooks Oh, why not? I don't particularly care one way of another.... 1y
rubyslippersreads @TheAromaofBooks @willaful Better Price than Tom Bertram. 1y
Bookwormjillk Waiting to see if Tom will die at sea 1y
TheAromaofBooks @willaful - I don't know, he just seems kind of shallow. Even though the whole thing with Kitty is way more on her building fantasies, he DID flirt with her, ask her for the first two dances more than once, etc. But it may partially be because this author hasn't done much character development overall haha @rubyslippersreads - RIGHT!? I actually think Miss Bingley would be the perfect match for Bertram 😂 1y
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk obviously someone needs to die at sea 🤷🏻‍♀️⚓️ 1y
rubyslippersreads @TheAromaofBooks They are perfect for each other! 🤣 1y

#Pemberlittens Ch. 21: Ick, all I feel is dread for when this whole farce becomes exposed. And really, Farzana and Hafsa are pretty mean to pull this on their family. Hafsa is so spoiled she can‘t stand for one of her rishtas to go to her cousin? Really?
Ch. 22. Amir is a pig. And I really want to know more about Zareena.

Ruthiella I really dislike Hafsa now. I never like Farzana. I want both of them to get their comeuppance! 😖 2y
vonnie862 @Ruthiella I'm with you. I don't like any of those two. What saddens me the most was how easily Hafsa wanted to betray her cousin who has always been there for her. And she shouldn't be mad at Ayesha when Hafsa hasn't done anything for the conference. 2y
See All 10 Comments
vonnie862 I too am very curious about Zareena. I really hope she's doing ok in India. 2y
Ruthiella @vonnie862 I think there are two mysteries: 1. Zareena and her life in India. Khalid was only 14 when she left. Does he even know the real story? 2. The death of Ayesha‘s father. How and why is it so hush hush? 🤨 2y
peanutnine @vonnie862 for real, Ayesha has only ever supported Hafsa. She is beyond selfish to betray her so easily 2y
Bluebird Hafsa is a spoiled and selfish, but she was masterly manipulated by Farzana. That woman is evil…she cares more about herself than her son. 2y
LitStephanie The whole mistaken identity thing just feels really silly, unnecessary, and immature at this point. There was just no really good reason for it to happen. 2y
julieclair Hafsa seems like the stereotypical mean girl. And Farzana…ugh… I‘m with @Ruthiella , I hope she does get her comeuppance. 2y

AllDebooks 🤣🤣 2y
Ruthiella Yes. Everyone is so superficial in this neighborhood it seems, even the vicar! 2y
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella it surprised me how rude he was to poor Nancy! Ugh!! 2y
Bookwormjillk 🤣🤣 2y
Clare-Dragonfly I think Nancy and the other neighbors are hoping the sweet governess marries the good vicar! (Just as we are! Though we haven‘t really seen him speak yet.) 2y
dabbe Hatfield kicked Nancy's cat! Evil is too good a word for him! 👿 2y
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻yes and yes @dabbe Hatfield is a total tosser! For some reason I keep thinking of the PBS show Grantchester, although the vicar in that is extremely nice to look at. The Murray girls are something else 2y
Morr_Books I like this book so far, but I like y'all's comments more. 😆❤️ 2y
peanutnine @dabbe right?? I gasped so loud when that happened. What a horrible man 2y
julieclair @Clare-Dragonfly No matter what he says when he does speak, it has to be better than anything Hatfield has said so far! 2y
julieclair This quote reminds me of that old (and true) Southern saying, “Pretty is as pretty does.” 2y

Chapter 10: y‘all. Searching for Victorian girl with broken arm is a rabbit hole I did not need to go down! #idigress Beck is not a cuddly mom but Lucy would like to cuddle Dr John #thatsallihavetosayaboutthat #fifinewassobrave #desireeneedsaspanking #beckneedstoparent #imfeelingsuperjudgey #lucyisaflirt #soproud #pemberlittens #villette

Bookwormjillk Lol I think we can forgive you for not having that particular search in your history 2y

SamAnne So many coincidences in Lucy‘s journey! 2y
Bklover Naturally I had to go immediately google your search. It all sounds crazy. 😳 2y
Bklover Oh, and great hashtags as usual! 2y
BarkingMadRead @Bklover there was one picture of how they fixed a broken arm and it looked like a form of torture! 2y
KristiAhlers I‘m loving the imagine and hashtags 🤣. Oh Dr John. I‘m glad he‘s the one that helped her that night! 2y
BarkingMadRead @KristiAhlers I was hoping we would see that hero again, hopefully he hangs around! 2y
suvata I‘m also a big fan of your #hashtags! Dr. John is a welcome distraction. 2y
